In other words, you will not be able to boost LS's effectiveness by swapping gear. Also, you will not be able to swap gear while LB is traveling. In classic wow, you are out in combat immediately after the cast is finished not when it hits the target.

Great guide, finally had a chance to watch this whole thing. I've been playing as an Orc Shmtank on Northdale and had a freaking blast showing people how possible shaman tank was. I was actually lvling a warrior at the same time as my shm but once I realized how viable shm tank actually was I switched to main Shm. I ran into "Melderontv" in game and he asked how tanking Scholo was. I will say I only once had a problem out of about 17 runs to get full Bloodmail. Boss teleported me and i lost aggro and couldnt get it back, but was so low HP at the time it didn't matter. Grounding totem, purge and earthshock made that boss not too much of a problem. I honestly feel that Shm tank is easier threatwise than tanking with a Fury or Arms warr that doesnt have defiance. I would caution any shm tanks that read this that the dragons in ST are pretty nature resistant so take Caperfin's advice to heart on using Frostshock if your not tanking it in your high 50s-60.
Good lord this is like building the pyramids with a plastic spoon. would be fun to watch though. Flexibility from the original version of wow let players explore some weird stuff. Truly miss that.
Came from the beta testing tanking, lower level results where the following. Was able to hold and generate more agro on single target than a warrior or druid, AoE is a struggle but can be done with a faster main hand for more chance on hit's to generate agro instead missing with a slower speed weapon but that"s just my personal opinion. Mana is an issue but mages/cooking are your friends otherwise fine just use your mana sparingly. Could sometimes pull up to 3 groups of separate packs of mobs without having to drink in a coordinated group. So yes it does work, in fact even was able to run dungeons with 4 dps no healer as shaman tank.
We used Shaman tank for Onyxia in Vanilla, because of the instant threat and all the flying. Worked very nice. But I prefer a fury/dps warrior as tank in 5man.
Only bc she hits like a fucking wet noodle. Take a couple hateful blows followed by a crushing bc you wear mail and are not defense capped...... then come talk. I still don't actually believe you though.... any proof?
Why... in 5 mans a shaman can make a run so much faster.... unless your warrior is just insanely over geared. Id take a shaman tank any day over a warrior...
A note from a priest about fade that's worth mentioning. Fade is a temporary reduction in threat levels. After 10 seconds it all comes right back. If the tank or someone else hasn't established more threat on the mob in the meantime it's likely your priest is going to either die or be very distracted.
chellnz a priest shouldn’t be grabbing threat as they have threat reducing talents and they are a ranged class unless the tank is doing something very wrong.
@@uni4rm one thing about classic is that whilst everyone knows what the ideal build is not everyone will use it. If your focus was primarily PVP but you were healing an instance or raid you might have chosen to skip Silent Resolve. The vanilla game is so much slower, but everyone who plays retail is used to being able to speed through raids and instances. If we think about instances in particular building up threat takes quite a bit of time and for a large pull you can't guarantee that the tank hasn't zeroed in on just making sure the DPS don't pull the main target and not built up enough threat on secondary targets. Using what limited AOE abilities tanks have can also be difficult if there has been any mobs CCed. Finally when a mob has been CCed the only person who has built up threat is the healer. If DPS has been slow killing all the other mobs then when the CC breaks that mob is coming right to us.
Any class with a tanking spec should be able to tank raids. Any dps spec excluding pvp spec, should be able to dps raids. Having your choice removed isn't fun. Not sure how anyone can argue against that.

I'm not asking for classes to be the same but what is the point if warriors are the best tanks and if you want to tank raids you pretty much have to go a warrior. You have your choice removed, it means everyone is playing the same optimal class. Boring and bad game design, no changes isn't an argument.
This is sort of a comprehensive tanking guide for all classes, combined with a few quirks you can do as a shaman. Warriors do all that consumable and itemization stuff too.
@@Treaxvour Sure, but the difference is that Warriors will do all that and be able to tank all content. On the Shaman tank, you still do all that work to only be a semi-viable off-tank in 20 mans :)
I did tank all instances up to Uldaman with shaman. Only annoyance was RFD lich flank and those silencing mobes - turns off earth shock. Mana still an issue: you need to drink after 2 - 3 packs. Aoe parties will break your agro build no matter what. Conclusion - tank with shaman if there is no warrior on supply OR if warior is hopeless as tank and has no clue how to tank - 50 perc of my dungeon runs were this case.
It tank all dung until maraudon. I was not planning to do maraudon but I did cause of the absence of another tank. It is perfectly doable, when mobs are not nr is super ez to pull of. With nature immune or resistance it is much more tricky to keep thread. But yeah it is for sure doable. I think I will be able to tank everything to be honest. My armor is low. But at level 51 I'm already in 18% dodge when putting down totems and 12% block.

Why read the slides to us? We can finish reading a wall of text in about 30 seconds. Put the basic stuff on the slide and tell us something interesting. Slide reading is why companies are starting to forbid PowerPoint presentations. Thanks for giving us the info though.
Proof or it didn't happen. 35% dodge is just bullshit and we all know it. You also can't get that hp number while having that dodge chance. Sorry dude, YOUR TROLL HAS FAILED! :(
Worth looking into is how +damage gear works with spell casts. Maybe it was only the case on private servers, but if you cast a fireball as a mage wearing all your gear and then use a mod to become naked and take off all your gear before pulling the mob, the spell will lose the benefit of your +damage stats from taking off your gear. It’s because spell damage calculation happens on spell hit not on spell cast. Both the damage, crit roll, and resist are calculated together. So yeah, I think the gear cheese on casting lightning bolt to pull won’t work. Maybe it will for lightning shield
Unlimited Power Do you have proof of this being the case on private servers to this day? Most notably are you aware of this being the case on the Lights Hope core? The reason I ask is because I am almost certain it doesn’t function in the manner you just described on the most popular Vanilla private server. I don’t have any proof, but I can tell you for a fact that you cannot use an Engineering reflector trinket on a spell that has already been cast and is mid air. This is because the calculation for the spell goes off when it’s finished casting not when the missile actually lands, so you’d have to already have popped your reflector trinket midcast. I guess I’m trying to see how it would function differently for actually calculating the damage of the spell.

Fair. Apologies if I was snappy. I played on the most popular private server like in 2012 and 2013 (which may as well be ancient history and the coding has gotten a lot better since then.) I've played on others since, but I was a Mage on this server so I was keenly aware of this. If you threw out a Frostbolt and then popped Zandalarian Hero Charm and/or Arcane Power, the Frostbolt that was in mid-air benefitted from it. @@Vade700
Yes. While looking for newer comments it was funny seeing people dunking on the concept of a shaman tank and jokingly warlock tanks. Well now we have both lol. Can’t wait to play shaman tank and see what kind of gear combos to use. I remember there is a mail set with plus defence.
@@connorkenney6938 The only real issue i can see showing up is if they don't put in the supplimental gear to go along with all the new "specs" like idc how many buffs you give shaman, some bosses will 1 shot you with a crushing blow if not def cap. *cough*PATCHWORK*cough*
Hindsight and so on but at around 40:00 I'd like to add that in Classic, generally, relative performance of a spec and class can highly depend on the raid you're with. Elemental shaman was my side passion project in 2020/21 and it has its niche, I'd say. If you don't put in effort and are in a raid that does the same, you'll suck. If you tryhard but your raid is casual enough to have at least some time (I'm not even talking much, I just mean you leave combat long enough to drink walk) between pulls, you can be just like the mages (usually had one mage slightly above me in AQ40, ZG and so on) and aoe packs, funnily enough, are where you shine the most. Then I was allowed to bring my ele to our main raid once. Didn't work out that well. I was oom, most of the time bc the brown tide kept running. Likewise for tanking, paladin tanks get a huge benefit to their threat from that very brown tide (with their bok tactic) but they can keep wearing defensive gear while doing it. So with a guild that has a ton of warriors in MC, paladins could actually be amazing. We were a horde guild but I reckon we'd rather have brought one of those than the druid we ended up kicking after phase 3 or so. Okay, we ended up just going with one more dual wielding warrior bc of course we did but you get the idea. Anyways, just meaning to say it depends with these things, sometimes. Don't be discouraged by a bad example and don't be blinded by a good one ^^

On Lights Hope Vanilla my dungeon group let me take RFC twice as a troll shaman and we did great. Stoneskin totem and wielding a shield make up for the lack of armor! Rockbitter weapon and earth shock generate way more threat then a protection paladin does!
Do not forget you can cast lightning bolt and chainlightning and earthshock at start of pull and can be cast on different targets to maximize threat on several targets great for aoe pulls or big pulls to keep hate off healers
@@bonsaw57 i mean you can hate but when your hunting a piece of gear for BiS healer set and you and buddies are looking for a tank for an hour and a half, you may consider tanking for your group. I had the pleasure of tanking ever 5 man atleast once in vanilla with my shaman, was not bad at all just start your burst make sure you get your teams CC off and keep tab attacking the enemies. Specifically farmed iron foe for ages from that one lvl 50s dungeon (never dropped stubborn king under the mountain), that dungeon was pretty hard for shaman. I know I off tanked UBRS when it was 10 man but ya rogue could probably off tank that...
I have a Question, while I´m leveling and tanking its better to use dagger and shield, or a slower wepon like Maces or Axes with ROCK to get better agroo? Thanks for info
Dislike the fact guides still include city world buffs like warchiefs blessing which have a 12+ hour cd or something, and the same with dragon slayer when triggered you have to wait for X amount of time before you can do it again.
@@DefcampMelderonTV If going for 100% completeness yes I would agree. But one can not expect that all raiding guilds uphold a certain timing for Dragonslayer, making it too inconsistent to rely on. So the chance of deliberetly getting it is significantly lower than on some private servers where there is no CDs on these buffs. Which in my opinion should make the buff an honourable mention instead of a main stay conclusion. Not disliking the guide as a whole because of it.
@@Zutraxi I see your points. This is definitely not a beginner's guide. I've already made that guide for shaman tanking. This is extremely min maxxy when it comes to end game shaman tanking. So, I think viewers will quickly realize how deep they want to go down the rabbit hole. One thing I don't do in my guides is hand hold. I think people should figure out a lot for themselves
As some1 who's been watching everything i can find on shamans in vanilla / classic, this is another great video to add to my collection. I've tanked as a shaman myself in mid-high level dungeons, but i've yet to tank lv 60+ dungs as a shaman. I can tell u that it's great fun, people were extremely surprised as i did it before all of these videos started popping up (when Northdale was still new) but i have to admit that it's wonderful to see all of these guides popping up. It all really shows how versatile the shaman can be and how much u can do with their talent trees. QUESTIONs FOR CAPERFIN: I still do not understand why Force Reactive Disk is considered to be a better pre-bis item than Draconian Deflector when comparing the defensives. (U ranked disk higher in ur video and i havn't gotten a reply yet) Why are u prioritizing points in Ancestral Knowledge over Shield Spec, imo, Shield Spec should prove a lot more beneficial in the survival since it blocks more damage and more often, we also need to keep in mind that a block can never be a crit, thus, technically bringing u closer to becoming uncritable (if possible at all for shamans in classic). I can see the need for mana. I have a hard time justifying 5 points into Toughness. I absolutely understand that armor is needed for a more reliable damage taken as the armor reduces by a flat amount and that the shamans have no skills similar to bear gaining a big boost from armor on leather gear, but it's still just 10% from ur gear.
The first talent build Caperfin has around the 37 minute mark is completely different from the talent build you have for leveling. Would you recommend your leveling build and then switching to Caperfin's after getting to 60?
honestly, the guide is very misleading. He doesn't explain the gear requirements at all, or show examples of possible gear. Only shows niche weird pieces you can use. also like most of these guides its just slideshows....

Yo Melderon or Defcamp or anyone please respond. How in the hell is dodge a more valuable stat than parry?! It causes the attack to not hit you.... AND then your next attack comes out faster. So wouldn't it simply be a better version of dodge? What am I missing and why is parry 2 points rated low than dodge in the stat prio graph here.
whats the logic behind taking enhancing totems talent over guardian totems? is it because of the increased threat generation from enhancing totems? Why is shield spec too weak?

This never happened in vanilla, as someone who played up to wrath, there was NEVER a dungeon from rfc-ubrs that I saw or heard a shaman tanking. Everyone would just rather wait a little longer and find a warrior (if they didn't just laugh you out of the group). Misleading video/ title.

You can RUclips "shaman tank vanilla" and see the failure videos though! Always overgeared, always not able to hold aggro on multiple targets, always oom and drinking on every pull. Proof is in the pudding

Lightning sheild cannot crit. And unfortunately, you cannot preemptively store spell power on LS any longer. It was true on private server but not the beta so that strategy does not work
Hey there, thanks for the excellent guide! It's my first time playing classic wow and it's been a dream to try the shaman tank and this vid has served me very well so far. I wanted to ask about the "standard" talent build - why Enhancing Totems over Guardian Totems? And why never put points in Guardian Totems even in the other builds? Assuming you're put in the same raid group as the other tanks, if you use SoE totem, that won't help your aggro vs the main main tank/other tanks (assuming prot warr as standard) since you'll all benefit from SoE totem? Or do you risk letting mdps overaggro you if you're not using SoE totem? I thought giving yourself and the other tanks an improved SS totem would seriously raise your stock as an offtank?

i managed 10k+ hp 35% dodge 9% parry, 10k armor without inspiration, 20% block, 152 block rating with BIS gear and full buffs.
Proof or it didn't happen. 35% dodge is just bullshit and we all know it. You also can't get that hp number while having that dodge chance. Sorry dude, YOUR TROLL HAS FAILED! :(

I'd like to know this too. With a faster weapon we should proc flurry more often which should increase threat per second.

I tried tanking RFC on my shaman in classic last night. It was such a pain. If I ever took on a group of more than 2 it was utter chaos.

Worth looking into is how +damage gear works with spell casts. Maybe it was only the case on private servers, but if you cast a fireball as a mage wearing all your gear and then use a mod to become naked and take off all your gear before pulling the mob, the spell will lose the benefit of your +damage stats from taking off your gear. It’s because spell damage calculation happens on spell hit not on spell cast. Both the damage, crit roll, and resist are calculated together.
So yeah, I think the gear cheese on casting lightning bolt to pull won’t work. Maybe it will for lightning shield

Do you have proof of this being the case on private servers to this day? Most notably are you aware of this being the case on the Lights Hope core? The reason I ask is because I am almost certain it doesn’t function in the manner you just described on the most popular Vanilla private server. I don’t have any proof, but I can tell you for a fact that you cannot use an Engineering reflector trinket on a spell that has already been cast and is mid air. This is because the calculation for the spell goes off when it’s finished casting not when the missile actually lands, so you’d have to already have popped your reflector trinket midcast. I guess I’m trying to see how it would function differently for actually calculating the damage of the spell.

Fair. Apologies if I was snappy. I played on the most popular private server like in 2012 and 2013 (which may as well be ancient history and the coding has gotten a lot better since then.) I've played on others since, but I was a Mage on this server so I was keenly aware of this. If you threw out a Frostbolt and then popped Zandalarian Hero Charm and/or Arcane Power, the Frostbolt that was in mid-air benefitted from it. @@Vade700

Yes. While looking for newer comments it was funny seeing people dunking on the concept of a shaman tank and jokingly warlock tanks. Well now we have both lol. Can’t wait to play shaman tank and see what kind of gear combos to use. I remember there is a mail set with plus defence.
@@connorkenney6938 The only real issue i can see showing up is if they don't put in the supplimental gear to go along with all the new "specs" like idc how many buffs you give shaman, some bosses will 1 shot you with a crushing blow if not def cap. *cough*PATCHWORK*cough*

I did a study of reflective damage and learned that thorns and fire shield (lock/imp) do not stack. Can you confirm this is the case in classic?
They do stack.
Shaman should be flexible. They have all the element of the planets to create a rock armor shield.
Hindsight and so on but at around 40:00 I'd like to add that in Classic, generally, relative performance of a spec and class can highly depend on the raid you're with.
Elemental shaman was my side passion project in 2020/21 and it has its niche, I'd say. If you don't put in effort and are in a raid that does the same, you'll suck. If you tryhard but your raid is casual enough to have at least some time (I'm not even talking much, I just mean you leave combat long enough to drink walk) between pulls, you can be just like the mages (usually had one mage slightly above me in AQ40, ZG and so on) and aoe packs, funnily enough, are where you shine the most. Then I was allowed to bring my ele to our main raid once. Didn't work out that well. I was oom, most of the time bc the brown tide kept running.
Likewise for tanking, paladin tanks get a huge benefit to their threat from that very brown tide (with their bok tactic) but they can keep wearing defensive gear while doing it. So with a guild that has a ton of warriors in MC, paladins could actually be amazing. We were a horde guild but I reckon we'd rather have brought one of those than the druid we ended up kicking after phase 3 or so. Okay, we ended up just going with one more dual wielding warrior bc of course we did but you get the idea.
Anyways, just meaning to say it depends with these things, sometimes. Don't be discouraged by a bad example and don't be blinded by a good one ^^

On Lights Hope Vanilla my dungeon group let me take RFC twice as a troll shaman and we did great. Stoneskin totem and wielding a shield make up for the lack of armor! Rockbitter weapon and earth shock generate way more threat then a protection paladin does!

Do not forget you can cast lightning bolt and chainlightning and earthshock at start of pull and can be cast on different targets to maximize threat on several targets great for aoe pulls or big pulls to keep hate off healers
And then you're oom and lose threat and your group died bc rockbiter alone can't hold shit for aggro >.
@@bonsaw57 i mean you can hate but when your hunting a piece of gear for BiS healer set and you and buddies are looking for a tank for an hour and a half, you may consider tanking for your group.
I had the pleasure of tanking ever 5 man atleast once in vanilla with my shaman, was not bad at all just start your burst make sure you get your teams CC off and keep tab attacking the enemies.
Specifically farmed iron foe for ages from that one lvl 50s dungeon (never dropped stubborn king under the mountain), that dungeon was pretty hard for shaman. I know I off tanked UBRS when it was 10 man but ya rogue could probably off tank that...

You can also drive everywhere you go in reverse. Doesn't make it a good idea.
Dislike the fact guides still include city world buffs like warchiefs blessing which have a 12+ hour cd or something, and the same with dragon slayer when triggered you have to wait for X amount of time before you can do it again.
It would be an incomplete guide without them
@@DefcampMelderonTV If going for 100% completeness yes I would agree. But one can not expect that all raiding guilds uphold a certain timing for Dragonslayer, making it too inconsistent to rely on. So the chance of deliberetly getting it is significantly lower than on some private servers where there is no CDs on these buffs. Which in my opinion should make the buff an honourable mention instead of a main stay conclusion.

@@Zutraxi I see your points. This is definitely not a beginner's guide. I've already made that guide for shaman tanking. This is extremely min maxxy when it comes to end game shaman tanking. So, I think viewers will quickly realize how deep they want to go down the rabbit hole. One thing I don't do in my guides is hand hold. I think people should figure out a lot for themselves

As some1 who's been watching everything i can find on shamans in vanilla / classic, this is another great video to add to my collection.
I've tanked as a shaman myself in mid-high level dungeons, but i've yet to tank lv 60+ dungs as a shaman. I can tell u that it's great fun, people were extremely surprised as i did it before all of these videos started popping up (when Northdale was still new) but i have to admit that it's wonderful to see all of these guides popping up. It all really shows how versatile the shaman can be and how much u can do with their talent trees.
QUESTIONs FOR CAPERFIN:
I still do not understand why Force Reactive Disk is considered to be a better pre-bis item than Draconian Deflector when comparing the defensives. (U ranked disk higher in ur video and i havn't gotten a reply yet)
Why are u prioritizing points in Ancestral Knowledge over Shield Spec, imo, Shield Spec should prove a lot more beneficial in the survival since it blocks more damage and more often, we also need to keep in mind that a block can never be a crit, thus, technically bringing u closer to becoming uncritable (if possible at all for shamans in classic). I can see the need for mana.
I have a hard time justifying 5 points into Toughness. I absolutely understand that armor is needed for a more reliable damage taken as the armor reduces by a flat amount and that the shamans have no skills similar to bear gaining a big boost from armor on leather gear, but it's still just 10% from ur gear.

The first talent build Caperfin has around the 37 minute mark is completely different from the talent build you have for leveling. Would you recommend your leveling build and then switching to Caperfin's after getting to 60?
no dont waste your gold on a meme spec at lvl 60. you likely would need full mc gear to even tank a 5man. the guide is misleading

honestly, the guide is very misleading. He doesn't explain the gear requirements at all, or show examples of possible gear. Only shows niche weird pieces you can use. also like most of these guides its just slideshows....

Yo Melderon or Defcamp or anyone please respond. How in the hell is dodge a more valuable stat than parry?! It causes the attack to not hit you.... AND then your next attack comes out faster. So wouldn't it simply be a better version of dodge? What am I missing and why is parry 2 points rated low than dodge in the stat prio graph here.

This never happened in vanilla, as someone who played up to wrath, there was NEVER a dungeon from rfc-ubrs that I saw or heard a shaman tanking. Everyone would just rather wait a little longer and find a warrior (if they didn't just laugh you out of the group). Misleading video/ title.

No, not at all, not over the 15 years that wow has existed. It never will as it is a stupid idea. I cannot overstate how much this will lead to failure in raids :/

You can RUclips "shaman tank vanilla" and see the failure videos though! Always overgeared, always not able to hold aggro on multiple targets, always oom and drinking on every pull. Proof is in the pudding

Lightning sheild cannot crit. And unfortunately, you cannot preemptively store spell power on LS any longer. It was true on private server but not the beta so that strategy does not work

Hey there, thanks for the excellent guide! It's my first time playing classic wow and it's been a dream to try the shaman tank and this vid has served me very well so far.
I wanted to ask about the "standard" talent build - why Enhancing Totems over Guardian Totems? And why never put points in Guardian Totems even in the other builds? Assuming you're put in the same raid group as the other tanks, if you use SoE totem, that won't help your aggro vs the main main tank/other tanks (assuming prot warr as standard) since you'll all benefit from SoE totem? Or do you risk letting mdps overaggro you if you're not using SoE totem? I thought giving yourself and the other tanks an improved SS totem would seriously raise your stock as an offtank?
