Mr Smith you are a master at your chosen trade and the life path you have taken . Music lovers of the world thank you for the day you picked up a guitar and the joy you have brought to our ears Thank you
Wish I had seen them in concert. I was 19 in the 70's when Abandoned Luncheonette came out. Young folks in Southwest Michigan totally digging it. We loved it! Good move bringing G.E. Smith on tour. He slides in and takes over ⁸
I remember when this concert would play on Showtime. I taped it and would play it in my boombox again and again. (Ahhh the 80's. lol I would love to find this concert on Blu-Ray/DVD.
He ran Dylan's tour in the late '80's. He put together his 30th Anniversary Special in '92. He was & is a bad ass. I just found this out! Now I know why I enjoyed their early music, the guitar playing.
I remember my old man recorded this concert back in the summer of 82 on hbo!! To this day I still play the hell out of it. RIP Pops! I will see you on the other side.
Daryl and John are great musicians and charismatic showmen, but it's funny to see how GE manages to steal the show. Nowadays he is far more introverted, but he remains a guitar wizard as ever. He is one of the greats.
TheReubenKincaid those vintage instruments are gold and can bring the golden tone ! I prefer fenders and Gibson’s over Jackson , ESP and Ibanez any day !!!!
I saw Hall and Oates in June 1983 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. This is how they opened the show. Personally, though, I will always feel that Did It In a Minute would have been a better opener. Marshall Crenshaw opened.
I've noticed in some of these early 80's live concerts, Daryl flips the 2nd and 3rd verse. From a story telling stand point, it makes sense to do that. I wonder if he wished the record was recorded that way...
Daryl had a problem remembering the verses for this song. If you look on the side of his piano he has a sheet with the words to "Family Man" taped on it. You can catch him glancing at it ocassionally here and also in The Liberty Concert in 1985.
I love this version, but we got to respect the original version of mike oldfield the guy known for the horror movie soundtrack of the exorcist, because without him, this song would never exist, and Hall and Oates would of never made this song succeed.
No, it is a tenor guitar. It's tuned differently than a standard guitar. The strings are usually CGDA like a viola ('cellos are tuned to the same notes only lower), but they can be tuned differently.
I've got a question. I'm sure that fans of the group recall their live concert from Dublin, Ireland, and it was superior. How would I go about getting a recording? Anyone?
No; totally an electric guitar (maybe a Gibson ES-335). It does look like only four strings though (removed middle tuners??) He even does the little "solo" (after GE Smith) that goes up in pitch (3:05-3:08, and 3:12-3:15). In the standard song video, it shows John Oates doing that, but even in more recent video's on Daryl's House, Daryl continues to do that part.
The lineup for this show, as was standard for most of their early ‘80s material: Daryl Hall (vocals, rhythm/occasional lead guitar, keyboards) John Oates (vocals, rhythm/occasional lead guitar) G.E. (“Great Entertainment”) Smith (lead guitar, live drums on “One on One”) Tom “T-Bone” Wolk (bass, backing vocals, accordion on “Italian Girls”) Charlie “Mr. Casual” DeChant (saxophone, keyboards, backing vocals) Mickey Curry (live drums, percussion, drum pads)
Man, G.E. Smith was *pure power* back in the day.
One name - G E Smith - absolutely awsome...
G.E. Smith one of the very very best ever to play lead!!!
I SAW them in '83 and they absolutely ROCKED‼️‼️👍👊
Scandal open?
I was at that concert. It was my introduction into the band. Love them all since.
Hall & Oates definitely ruled the 80s
I was lucky to catch them in concert in Springfield, Illinois, also in 1983. They opened the show exactly this way. It was so darn good!
Mr Smith you are a master at your chosen trade and the life path you have taken . Music lovers of the world thank you for the day you picked up a guitar and the joy you have brought to our ears Thank you
GE. love me some GE
Appreciate this. the internet economy is eliminating great live performers.
Man imagine traveling back in time and being there.
G.E. Smith rules !
We took it all for granted.
2020 and these guys still fkn rock.
I clicked on this video just to see the great G E Smith play guitar and I'm not disappointed.
Very under rated guitarist of my time that needed more recognition that he has received.
Fender did produce the G E Smith signature Telecaster guitar and that says a lot about what a fantastic guitar player he is.
The man can shred.........very talented guitarist.
G E SMITH ,muito bom brazil🇺🇸🇺🇸
The classic Hall & Oates band!
I remember watching this on VHS
I like this live version better!
GE was really making his guitar scream for mercy. The rest of the band sounded great as well.
I'm a huge fan of Hall & Oates, my favourite H&O' era was when G.E.Smith played lead guitars..he made a lot of pretty damm good guitar solos...
I was born September 1968 the youngest of 10 I listen to all my brothers and sisters music I love the 80s music best but 60s 70s as well
I remember watching this with my dad when I was a kid and calling G.E. Smith Mr Green Jeans. Great concert. Wish a dvd would be made.
Wish I had seen them in concert. I was 19 in the 70's when Abandoned Luncheonette came out. Young folks in Southwest Michigan totally digging it. We loved it! Good move bringing G.E. Smith on tour. He slides in and takes over

Goddamn amazing.
Great live music by great musicians...love the energy in this performance...perfection by the entire band...
God this song is sooooo addictive!
the original is great too! its a great cover
Original by Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame
Who else is on a GE Smith kick?
Damn the guitar lead is face melting
I used to have this on VHS. my stereo system was connected to my VCR and so one day I recorded this to audio cassette tape. Awesome show!
MR. G.E. SMITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The intro is called "At Tension"
All i can say is damnnnnn!!!!!!!!
I love Family Man, a gem from the best Japanese song
I remember when this concert would play on Showtime. I taped it and would play it in my boombox again and again. (Ahhh the 80's. lol I would love to find this concert on Blu-Ray/DVD.
G. E. Smith and THAT band was THE band for H2O, there will NEVER need ANY other like that, when they were ACTUALLY a band and not a duo👍👊
He ran Dylan's tour in the late '80's. He put together his 30th Anniversary Special in '92. He was & is a bad ass. I just found this out! Now I know why I enjoyed their early music, the guitar playing.
Blue Eyed Soul!!
Great band they had then, GE a star !
their shows had a completely different feel and energy with G E on stage
He adds depth and biting edge.
Great guitar solo!
I love this video so much.
I remember this concert was simulcast on TV and FM radio (for stereo).
The ever ever very best
Hey who going to the 2020 Tour of D. Hall and J. Oates..I am!
"I just might."
I think I had this tape wow man 😍this hasn't aged they're shows are intense
Love this
I remember my old man recorded this concert back in the summer of 82 on hbo!! To this day I still play the hell out of it. RIP Pops! I will see you on the other side.
GE G O A T
Great song and version!!
cool bro! they were great!
At Tension
I would've liked to hear J.O. sing some of that song.
Daryl and John are great musicians and charismatic showmen, but it's funny to see how GE manages to steal the show. Nowadays he is far more introverted, but he remains a guitar wizard as ever. He is one of the greats.
The greatest odd ball pair on the planet who wudda known 😂
excellent!
G.E always playing those unfashionable vintage instruments ....lol. The dude never gave in and played one of those trendy 80's guitars....
TheReubenKincaid those vintage instruments are gold and can bring the golden tone ! I prefer fenders and Gibson’s over Jackson , ESP and Ibanez any day !!!!
GE Rocks like no other. What a talent
Me too! I love that song.
At their prime they had a b*tch hot band; excellent songwriting, and two very good singers.
100!!!!!!!!! Perfection
5:54 - 6:08 - “I got my eyes wide / you got your big G’s / I got my hash pipe ... “
There was actually a Gibson SG Tenor guitar made in the 60's. I will provide a link when I find it of pics. It really exists.
I saw Hall and Oates in June 1983 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. This is how they opened the show. Personally, though, I will always feel that Did It In a Minute would have been a better opener. Marshall Crenshaw opened.
Great song and album!
I've noticed in some of these early 80's live concerts, Daryl flips the 2nd and 3rd verse. From a story telling stand point, it makes sense to do that. I wonder if he wished the record was recorded that way...

Lots of Smiths around but only one with that name who plays guitar like that
Oates making love to his guitar, lol
"I don't even know what Oates does but Hall never had a hit without him..."
Anyone? Anyone?
There was "Dreamtime".
Oates just wrote the choruses to "She's Gone", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch". Basically their biggest singles.
My father had one. I loved jamming on it.
5:26 guitar seizure
I like solo part smith play great Jacob keppler
Do you put cheese on a chicken taco #teamnocheeze,,, love the big intro
Mike Olfield
I've got a question. I'm sure that fans of the group recall their live concert from Dublin, Ireland, and it was superior. How would I go about getting a recording? Anyone?
Just wondering if you know what month that clip was taken in 1983??
I hear Stranglehold. Anyone else?
is Daryl playing a bass?
looks like it
No; totally an electric guitar (maybe a Gibson ES-335).
I’m pretty sure every once in a while you can see the great t-bone wolk on the back left of the stage front
No. Sorry, but I don't know who's playing bass on this.
The lineup for this show, as was standard for most of their early ‘80s material:
Daryl Hall (vocals, rhythm/occasional lead guitar, keyboards)
John Oates (vocals, rhythm/occasional lead guitar)
G.E. (“Great Entertainment”) Smith (lead guitar, live drums on “One on One”)
Tom “T-Bone” Wolk (bass, backing vocals, accordion on “Italian Girls”)
Charlie “Mr. Casual” DeChant (saxophone, keyboards, backing vocals)
Mickey Curry (live drums, percussion, drum pads)
why'd they even bother trying to pretend that they were playing the guitars?
Too much emphasis in this song on lead guitar and not enough of the bass guitar imo.
