This was always a special song for me - an original by my second all time favorite artist (Mike Oldfield), which was a huge hit for my number ones (Daryl Hall and John Oates).
Mike Oldfield es un genio pero que me disculpe la cantante pero le queda grande este tema, solo Maggie sabia cantarlo con esa voz inconfundible que tiene que junto a Mike hicieron un gran binomio durante muchos años
has maggie died?loved the origional with her, reminds me in the bc of the car driving down 2 cornwall... dads music:-) l love pepsi singin it and me dad does 2;-)
@FyodorShuss This is the thing, Mike Oldfield is the composer, and also he is a progressive/symphonic rock multi instrumental composer that has made great contributions to the development of modern music. On the other hand Hall & Oates are a pop/rock group that made a cover of Mike's song, adding their own style and expanding the song the way they liked it for their audience. In other words, is a matter of tastes. I prefer Oldfield's version because the orchestral sound it has.
I heard Mike Oldfield talking about this song in an interview and he seemed amused by Hall & Oates version of this huge hit for them. However, this version is oddly amusing and filled with novelty and far from the Hall & Oates classic
Pepsi sang this on the Now and Then tour in '99 and every recording of the song from then has the same problem. But she always seems to sing everything else fine. Makes me think something about the mix of this particular song was problematic for her hearing, particularly because as the song builds, it seems to get worse.
I never understood the line “bark worse my bite” in context of this song and it’s triggered me since the late 90s resulting in a few arguments over the years. Surely if you were a family man you wouldn’t be stating your bark is worse than bite, It makes no sense. So my question Is, is he saying my bark is worse than my bite, to the prostitute so she continues to pursue him and take her advances, in which case why say “push me to far I just might” ? Or does he mean that he will beat her up if she doesn’t go away ? Anyone clear up what they think is the interpretation as it’s pissed me off for best part of 20 year😂 A better lyric would have been “he said leave m me alone, I’m a family man and I don’t want your business tonight”
He reverts the situation, that is it, and that is shocking for her. She does not have to be a prostitute, but assumes that she attracts men, also this man, like all others, and to get her, they must pay "a price" - money or whatever other advantage that he must grant her to get her. He does not play that game: He is convinced that he himself is attractive, and that own attractiveness is his "bark". But he does not bite - meaning, he will not go with her. I understand the song to highlight the woman's situation, as for her, as an attractive woman, it is traumatic to be refused, and the only reaction she has left is disdain. He reveals that she wants something from him, which he is free to decline.
He really wants her but is playing hard to get with that specific line of the song. He could just walk away and ignore her but he doesn't: he keeps communicating with her.
That's not true AT ALL. There are several covers better than the originals, this is not the case here, though. The original by mike is far better than H&O's version.
gonogazz there are plenty of songs written by Bob Dylan that are covered by other artists and turned out way better than any of Bob Dylan’s songs. So I think many times covers are better than the original.
@FredericaBimble Well, Mussorgsky's all right... Stravinsky, absolutely brilliant... Tchaikovsky, however... Totally Ignorant! Come on, it goes without saying that my musical tastes are unimpeachable, Frederica! Don't take it so personally just because I mock the panty-waist fans of Hall & Oates. They have it coming when they sound-off on Mike Oldfield.

Who,s listening 2019? !! I love it!!
I think this live version works real well. Helen Pepsi DeMacque gives the song a lot of attitude, together with Mike Oldfield and band.
This was always a special song for me - an original by my second all time favorite artist (Mike Oldfield), which was a huge hit for my number ones (Daryl Hall and John Oates).
Both Pepsi and Maggie have outstanding voice.
I love to drink Pepsi.
I just found about this original and it's great! It's got a raw, tight feeling that fits the situation in the lyrics.
Helen DeMacque very sympatic woman and a good singer.
Leon, she dies a great interpretation of this old tune.
Pepsi sings this so well
Fab song
Elle a une voix et un prestance exceptionnelle... J'adore
This live version is *much* better than Oldfield's studio song.
actually, no, it's not. it's good, but not better than the original.
Thank you for this vídeo... in June 2020.
Maravilloso
Thanks for posting
Great, salute from Croatia...
Great concert
amazing
Mike Oldfiled Rules!!!!! I was going to use this song in a stage musical but would have to get his OK, Pepsi does a fantastic job on this.
When real skill in performance was a thing.
Great voice Pepsi.
Hall and Oates should totally cover this!
Haha mint !
They did
Great idea!
Terrible idea 😆
Please check out Darryl Hall and Cheap Trick - they perform this song!
Wow, for 40 years I thought was a hall and oates song!
This version kicks ass!
Needs Maggie !!!
Hall and Oates version is pretty fair too.

good version, but maggie's original is the gold standard!!
I wonder why this isn't on dvd??
Como se llama esta cantante ?
has maggie died?loved the origional with her, reminds me in the bc of the car driving down 2 cornwall... dads music:-) l love pepsi singin it and me dad does 2;-)
One of the rare instances where the cover beats the original
Helen ace !
Anyone know who's on the bass?
john snow Carrie Melbourne. I did a discography search on Oldfield, saw the 'Tubular Bells III' live listing, and then read the personnel section.
Not on the DVD !!!!
I know! Too sad

I don't care if her voice is cracking--it's hard to sing live. What does it matter? Just look at her. Good gawd, Pepsi was smokin' hot.
@fagarass - You said! Wow... Hall and Oates made it their own and tore the song up.

Well she's no Maggie Reilly, is she.
Thats right. She`s not the same...
No one could replace Maggie, but I've grown to love this version, she's got the music in her 😉
what, red hair, slightly chubby, Irish? Like trying to compare Shania Twain with Cilla Black (rip). Both superb voices, both different.

As long as Oldfield gets his royalty check from H & O, I'm sure he doesn't really care.
Maggie Reilly only sing in Moonlight song or this is also with her? Because I don't know who is the black woman
Black or white......irrelevant.
Fool.
Who is she? She is awesome! Better than H & O. I do like both versions. Go Mike Oldfield!
Lordy, she was hot!
😂
Good.
Not good enough to to stand out in the rain for, but good nonetheless.
I love Pepsi, but probably this song shes not for his voice extension, many out of tune, but i love her
Elle ressemble à Meg du prince
Roxanne can't catch a break can she?
I really like this version the original right?
Yup! :-)
Grace Slick would be perfect for Family Man.
Something wrong with Pepsi's voice this time. Not quite on key or something.
yeah maybe her monitoring was off or something. it's really hard to sing when you can't hear yourself
Pepsi sang this on the Now and Then tour in '99 and every recording of the song from then has the same problem. But she always seems to sing everything else fine. shes no Maggie Riley is she ....
If she's good enough for Mike? I think Pepsi is great!
She's that Easy Lover Phil Collins and Philip Bailey were so worried about
Good stuff...but I dig the Hall and Oates version better.

Hall & Oates version is so much better, but this one rocks.
A copy can never be better then the original.its impossible!..But how ever..you might like Hall an Oates version better..A matter of taste.:)
That's not true AT ALL. There are several covers better than the originals, this is not the case here, though. The original by mike is far better than H&O's version.

Sounds like Oldfield channeled Hall & Oates!
Uh, Oldfield wrote this
Oldfield wrote and had a hit with Family Man. The Hall & Oates version is a remake.
it was on the Five Miles Out album
Grande también es Mike Olfield
The girl can not sing well enough )))😂
Che pessima cantante !

No, Mike just hasn't worked with Maggie since 1989. The last song she appeared on was "Blue Night" from "Earth Moving".
