I had written to an address I found on a record jacket, asking where they were playing in autumn '89. Ronnie wrote me back himself, with a list of venues, and I met them after their concert in Portree when they came out to sign autographs. When I asked Ronnie if I could get a picture with them, he called to Roy, "Hey! One of the Colonials wants a photo here!" and I still treasure it. How could anyone 'dislike'?! RIP Roy.
legends!!!! how many folk can write a national anthem and not even realise it?"flower of scotland" was written n spent years in the back of a drawer cause roy didnt think it was good enough! only realised when the nation adopted it as national anthem. R.I.P. Roy Williamson your a legend
Land o' the Kilt and Sporran - Underneath, there's nothin' worn! How I wish the wind was warm! Scotland the Brave. I must admit it's pretty gruesome, Walking about wi' your frozen twosome! It's all we've got - we musn't lose 'em - Scotland the Brave. Best paragraph ever.
For, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any condition be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself. Taken from the Declaration of Arbroath, 1320, which asserted Scotland's right to international recognition as an independent country.
I once heard a version that had these verses in it: Land where we don't like swankies, Land where we don't use hankies, Where the lassies love the Yankees, Scotland the Brave. Land that is full of strangers, Land where we know no dangers, Home of the Celts and Rangers, Scotland the Brave. Anyone know where I can find it?
Some of the meanings only a Scot could know were explained to me by my Scottish husband - love the song and the humour. But I can`t remember my Dearest ever complaining about "frozen twosome"s when wearing a kilt. LOL ......
I met the Corries after a concert in Inverness years ago.Ronnie came across as a bit pernickety but Roy was a lovely gentleman.Whatever their differences were, there has not been another such phenomenon in Scotland as far as wit, humour and perfectly-timed music are concerned, for many years. How lucky were we who were there when it was happening! Get in there you Youngies! It's all been left for YOU!
Classic Entertainers, worth their weight in gold. Fantastic and funny.. but I cannot help but wonder in todays so PC world, would they have ended up doin Jailhouse Rock, with the words they sing here? Uhhh! lol Thank you for this post.. Sadly I never came across them in life, what have I missed..
I emailed their website to see if this was available on DVD or CD, but it was never put on one due to being "politically incorrect": I do enjoy it on youtube to cheer me up as I do my bookwork. Thanks Iain
@kirkyz2010 I'm "English people", and I absolutely love the Corries, it's a shame England has nothing to compare. The Corries were simply wonderful. Even if their message often attacks my country, it's beautiful to listen to and they probably had a point!
To Stripey Dusty 45--Me too! I just found these gorgeous guys about 6 months ago in the process of researching Burns' songs, and now I drive all my associates NUTS making them listen too! Lol!
I'm very sorry to correct you there skempFUSS, but Scotland DOES have a national anthem. In the World Cup, rugby, other sporting events, we sing Flower of Scotland, but in the Commonwealth Games they play Scotland the Brave. The Scottish Parliament have already had this debate. Scotland is a seperate State that is joined in Union with the Kingdom of England, the Principality of Wales, and obviously Northern Ireland... we exists in a mutually beneficial nation among nations.
I think he starts on the next line ("Architects with paying hobbies"), then the crowd drowns him out laughing at "Councillors with part-time jobbies", so he says "Aye... If the shoe fits, wear it!" A lot of councillors in the audience?
@jockhamish I am an American fellow who stumbled upon the the Corries by accident. In two days I completely memorized the words to Loch Lomond. I think I will learn this song next!
IIRC ..this is around 1974 in the Music Hall in Aberdeen. I loved the Corries then, and still do. I was a real "SNP" chap in those days....now I have no time for them. Pity they got "hi-jacked" by the left in the late 70s/early 80s.
well given that it was in the corries song most people that post it are just quoting that line to show their agreement with the sentiment. whats wrong with that? THE DAY IS NEAR WHEN INDEPENDENCE WILL BE HERE!
Simply put... its a traditional martial air. Americans are/were just as likely to play the Marseilles (or even Prussian's Gloria) as well as just American favorites as "The Washington Post March" or the "Marine Corps Hymn"
Does any one know if this song is on MP3 or CD somewhere??!! It's nog on the comedy cd of the Corries, and I just can't find it anywhere on the internet :(

Brilliant!! Proud to be Scottish up here in Aberdeen. And this is a great version,as said typical Scottish humour. Big Thumbs up !!
Watching my uncle Ronnie try not to laugh is the funniest part of this lol
What a tremendous loss Roy Williamson was. Great folk duo.
@thetrollfairy I could not agree more with you. They were a truly great duo. True musicians. Their musicianship shines through all their music.
For, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any condition be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I think the Scottish should give the English independence (404 years of Scottish rule is enough)
how he can keep his face straight cracks me up!!!!
Remember seeing this on TV. Still as funny. Great duo and tremendous live. Always an great atmosphere. Woderful musicians as well. Sad loss Roy.
Now that is funny stuff!
We musn't lose 'em! Words to live by, for sure.
I have to listen to that part about 5 times every time I listen to this song.
I once heard a version that had these verses in it:
Land where we don't like swankies,
Land where we don't use hankies,
Where the lassies love the Yankees,

Classic Entertainers, worth their weight in gold. Fantastic and funny.. but I cannot help but wonder in todays so PC world, would they have ended up doin Jailhouse Rock, with the words they sing here? Uhhh! lol

The best version of "Scotland the Brave" I have ever heard: That one COULD be a National Anthem.
@jockhamish
I am an American fellow who stumbled upon the the Corries by accident. In two days I completely memorized the words to Loch Lomond. I think I will learn this song next!

I was a real "SNP" chap in those days....now I have no time for them. Pity they got "hi-jacked" by the left in the late 70s/early 80s.

Un-PC? Nah. There is nothing anti English about wanting independence.
Scotland will get independence the day is near
....it WILL be here!
well given that it was in the corries song most people that post it are just quoting that line to show their agreement with the sentiment. whats wrong with that?

@Iain40 quick question does the last verse refer to the first referendum for Scottish independence in the mid 1970s
Such great men for the fight of independence in Scotland.
This is brilliant and funny. But one thing Scotland had their revenge on England by supporting Tony Blair AAArgh, lol
