Great ride you guys! I am a transplanted Alaskan here in Maryland now. We moved up in the early 70s and I grew up there riding everywhere there were roads and many times just trails. My brother still lives there in my dads old house in Palmer. Though the roads HAVE gotten better up that way they can still be a challenge along with the Alaskan weather, critters and those mosquitoes! I was wondering what tires you guys got for your bikes that did very well for you. especially on the return trip on pavement. Anyway, you cant beat a good ride with good company! Thanks for posting your adventure guys! Take care my friends!!!
Thanks for your kind words! We bought Heidenau K 60 tires. We didn't have any problems with them at all however because they were knobby tires we were very careful on wet roads..
RUclips thought I'd be nice to see this in 2020, but for the sake of good motorcyclist everywhere set a good example and if you're going to park, park on the shoulder of the road not in the road.
I live in Florida & was up in Alaska in July of 2015 on a Yamaha FJR so I stay on paved roads for the most part. I'm going back this June with plans of going to Dawson for the Dust 2 Dawn gathering, the Top of the World Hwy & then on up to Deadhorse. However this year I'll be on a Yamaha Super Tenere & was thinking of changing tires over to knobbies either in Whitehorse or Fairbanks & I see where you did in Fairbanks. It seems as though you are thankful you did. May I ask your thoughts on that & may I ask what dealer you went to. It is by the way a very nice video, & after watching it I believe people will be ready to go. i know I am.
Thank you for your kind words regarding the video. I’m glad you liked it. We got tires in Fairbanks because we rode from Pennsylvania to California and then north to Alaska . The tires we got were Heidenau K 60. We got them at Trails End in Fairbanks. In my opinion they were excellent tires. We never had a flat or any other problem with them. We were able to ride home to Pennsylvania with those without changing them out. If you’re going to be on a super Tenere these might be the perfect tires for you Because they are tubeless. Best of luck to you on your trip and be safe!
By the way, the reason we changed out the tires in Fairbanks is it we had calculated that we had used approximately 2/3 of the useful life of the tires we had started with plus they were street tires. Although there are some paved areas on the Dalton , and other roads that you would want to ride, mostly they are dirt. We felt that having knobbies was a better way to go.
@@jamesburgessiii5870 I thank you for your information & advice. Although I'm 71 (yoa) many moons ago I was born in Pittsburgh (Go Steelers) & have ridden in Pennsylvania - many a great road to ride.
Joaquin The gravel was fine. We never really kicked up a lot and the trucks slowed down when they went past this so was never really a problem. The calcium chloride that they put down on the roads was only a problem if it was really wet. There really was no damage to the bikes as a result of that and we did go to a car wash to hose the bikes off when we got back to Fairbanks. The only issue we had was when the mud got on the hot pipes. The mud would be baked onto the pipes so I don’t think I’ll ever get the color back that there was before we rode on the Dalton. The only thing you can do is clean it as best as you can and let it go at that.
We didn’t have much dirt experience. We rode on some dirt roads in upstate Pennsylvania but that was basically it. Going through Canada gave us some experience on gravel, dirt and mud.
@@avi8tr177 ah! Me and a buddy are heading prudhoe bay in a few weeks. Wasn't aware there was unpaved section in Canada too. We will be on our street tires for that section. Hopefully shouldn't be a problem...
We were on street tires until we got to Fairbanks AK. We got a set of Heidenau K60’s at Trails End BMW. They are great tires. I still have them on the bike.
Dennis M It took us four days to go from Fairbanks to Deadhorse and back. We did it at the end of July but I think June would be good also. I think we got lucky with the weather because we had very little rain to deal with. If you ride up to Deadhorse, hopefully you’ll have relatively dry weather because when the roads get wet they become very slippery.
My wife and I are riding our Ural sidecar there summer 2020, Cant wait!
that's awesome mike ,I'm in fairbanks

That's very cool!
despite the rain, slick road, dodging trucks and caribou looks like a great time....
Thank you 🙏 for documenting
I feel envy! Thanks for sharing.
Looks like a great adventure for you guys! Thanks for the post

I was worried about them getting hit by one of those Haul road trucks ,I live in Fairbanks and go up the dalton every year
It seems like the shoulder was off camber at that spot, parking there might have resulted in a painful yard sale in the rhubarb though.
Yeah painful to watch experienced motorcyclists stop in the middle of a road.
Stopping in the middle of the road...with big trucks around, not safe. Fail.
Supernaut ....Tenfor. As a truck driver for 20+ years it’s something you see all the time. Unfortunately.
Sensacional essas estradas
Can I ask what kind of seat you have on there? Looks really comfortable!
It’s called a Russell, day long seat.
@@avi8tr177 Thank you!

We did the trip in July.

Where in Pennsylvania? I am near Allentown
What month did you do this in?
We did this ride at the end of July into the beginning of August.
Looks like a great trip, I’m curious if the flying gravel on the roads and that calcium chemical they put on the roads damaged your bikes at all.
