Excellent so far. Really enjoyed this video. I have been motorcycle touring and moto-camping for 20 years. I took a very similar rout to this one about 8 years ago. Great journey. One comment, although I love coffee, if I drank as much as you apparently did in this video, i'd have to use a catheter and collection bottle while riding. Either that or I'd be stopping every 30 minutes for a rest room break.
Glad to see you're posting your videos of your Alaskan trip. I was riding in Colorado at the end of May. SR141 N. to Grand Junction was spectacular. Keep the videos coming can't wait to see the next one.
Thanks for the video’s, I spent a lot of time in Colorado and Utah on motorcycles so it was fun seeing you go through. Always wanted to do a ride up to Alaska, seeing you just made me want it more! Goodbye!
Hey Tim... Just joined up. Will be following your adventure for the next couple of days. BTW,the closing statements about the number of sunrises one has ...... just wanna say AMEN !!!!!!
Sir, that was most beautiful. I love how you ended it, with the moving music, and with the facts about the number of sunrises we get. It was really great getting to know you through this episode. I look forward to watching the other ones. The ones on the forums are lucky to know you, and have you as an acquaintance or friend. You are so funny, too. This was so enjoyable to watch. Take care of yourself, and I hope you get to enjoy many more adventures. Hugs.
Hey Tim! Just discovered your channel (saw the word "Alaska", couldn't resist), and watched this first episode of your epic journey on the tiny bike. Wonderful! Love your style, and I know I'll enjoy the other episodes just as much! In just a month (end of September), I'm moving into my tiny travel trailer (14 feet), and moving myself to Alaska (from Washington state). :) I'll enjoy a leisurely drive up the AlCan Highway. My little trailer is already fortified with extra insulation all around (nicely done by previous owner, a custom home builder from cold MN). I'll be installing a small wood stove (it also has a good propane furnace), along with a few other nice mods to make it very comfortable. I'll be living in it until I can build my tiny off-grid cabin in lovely Alaska. Now I'm going to go enjoy episode two! :)
Excellent video, Tim. I really enjoy the way to make your videos. I have viewed all your videos 3 and 4 times. Love them! Thanks for making them and sharing them with us! (The Old Cheap Biker Guy)
Tim you're my hero. I've decided I am going to live vicariously through you. haha.. Since our chat at Deals Gap a year or so ago I been updating the WR with a sport-touring/Enduro package. You are an inspiration, keep up the good work :)
Well, that was inspiring and motivating! My wife and I started riding this year, and can't wait to start exploring. Great job on the video. Will be watching the rest for sure.
Tim, looks like you are hauling less gear than your last trip. Would love to see a video of your gear and packing procedure one day!! It's really great following along on your trips via RUclips! Thanks for posting your journey.
Great film and great adventure! It inspires me to go out and chase horizon :) I'm a beginner and have to make short trips first, but one day I will do one like this! Thanks a lot!
Great vids Tim, thanks again for all of your hard work in preparing them and sharing with all of us! Excited to see your 2018 trip to Alaska on your new DR650!! :{)
I just found your series of videos. Great job! I’ll be watching the rest this week as I have the time. I’ll be making a similar journey in the summer of 2019. I’ll be starting in Denver.
Speechless, really really awesome video man, i envy you lol, my super tenere will soon take me down those same roads one day along with dad and his Africa Twin, safe riding to you man, look forward to all your new vids.
Awesome! I used to ride with my dad before he passed back in 1992. Some of the best memories were made camping in north Georgia with him on our bike trips, enjoy.
Ya got me planning a cross country trip on a 36 year old BMW. Getting to the age, 67, where I got to get it done. Maybe I'll see you on the road in July
Hello Pedro! I've never been to Baja but would really love to experience it. I have been planning a trip there but would love to talk with someone like you that can answer lots of questions if it's not too much of a bother. @@tewster2 any time my friend. I am preparing to travel down to Baja on a DM200 thanks for helping me to build confidence to travel on a tiny motorcicle. Hope to meet you soon.
Just found your channel researching a trip to Alaska myself. Great photography thank you helps give insight. Curious what blue Canyon are you using in 2? And yes I had to do a double take looking at the motorcycle the BMW badge through me. LOL my friend and I are considering using DR 650’s currently.
I am so glad you have videos of your newest trip!! I feel heading up to Alaska in May was a bit early, brrrr 😉, but it's all good. l love the scenery and enjoy your commentaries. By the way, your beard and mustache look very nice.
just started watching your Alaska trip. Also subscribed. My wife and I hope to ride to Alaska at some point. But next year we are doing a trip to Newfoundland. 2-3 weeks. Already started documented the 'preparing' section. Cant wait. We will be riding 2 VStroms. A DL1000 (mine) and a DL650 (hers). Keep riding!
Nice. My buddy is making his first trip to the top this summer. He also has a V-Strom. Here is a link to his prep thread on ADV...advrider.com/index.php?threads/tin-horn-to-the-klondike-and-beyond-2017.1192176/....do you have a prep thread going on ADV that I can look at?

Thanks for the great video. Always a joy to watch. As you was walking down the road near the end of the video, I really felt sorry for you. You really need a female friend to go along with you and enjoy each others company. You really looked lonely. I hope someone great will fall in your life. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks. It would be great to have a riding partner but it is hard to find someone who rides as slow as me haha. That day I was thinking about how far away from home I was and how far I had to go....but...I snapped out of my doldrums and hit the road. Life is good.
Hi Tim, I like your video a lot, you are an inspiration, really! I have just noticed that you putted a BMW logo on your Yamaha WR250R. I have a blue BMW GS 800 and I though that BMW was offering this bike only in USA (I am from Canada). So I tried to found one here until I jump to the conclusion that that they don't build such a tinny bike :). Keep going with your video, they are awesome!
Haha I put the BMW logos on the bike for shits and giggles! I almost had a bunch of people convinced it was the new F250GS I was testing in the States before BMW announced it for sale! I'd pulled all the Yamaha stickers off the bike.
I have been planning a trip out west. I have a Ford 150 that pulls a enclosed trailer for my Buell Uly. Got my camp gear but I wont put it on the bike. When I stop at a camp ground, then I will do my riding come back and rest. Then move on to the next place.
Hi Sir Watching your Video tiny bike to Alaska I really enjoy it. Im having some down time right now getting over throat cancer so my wife want let me leave NC . I can't wait to get back out there . Take care Sir safe travels
Yeah I'm coming along real good I'm from Farmville when I get to so I can eat real good we get together maybe for lunch thank so much for getting back to me
Excellent video! I see you have an adventure touring motorcycle, of which, I have been looking into. I'm 65 and have not ridden for several years. I am a short guy 5'4" but 175 lbs. Marine Vet. My problem is that the adventure bikes have tall seat heights. What bike are you riding? Make and model? Just curious. I have found that the Triumph Tiger 800 XrX has the lowest seat height option. Well, thanks for your trip video logs. They are interesting and well done. Take care.
Howdy! I'm ridding a Yamaha WR250...pretty tall. As for the Triumph, for me, way way too top heavy and cumbersome. I like lighter bikes. Seay height is important but overall reliability, ease of handling, able to be picked up easily when it falls over, and easy to maintain are paramount for me.
@@tewster2 OK! Thanks for your input and for getting back to me. Really enjoying your videos! I was looking at the Super Tenere and then the Tenerae700 just came out. Both have very tall seat heights. Maybe a Honda CB500. I would like to be able to put both feet on the ground. Though short, I have longer legs than my torso. But, will check out that WR250. It might have a low seat option. I'll find out. Thanks a bunch!
Scott and Julie seem super cool. I would love to take a big bike trip but summers are my busy months. Maybe one day when I retire if my wife will let me. I drove through a deer at high speed last spring so she is thinking biking is not necessarily safe. I promised her I won't get another bike but the following week there was a Goldwing in my driveway. When she got home i told her happy birthday but two problems; she has no bike licence and it was not her birthday. Oh well I guess I have to drive it on her behalf.
Building a WR for longer distance. Can I ask what saddle or saddle plus mods you utilize on long distance days? I have the Seat Concepts and it is waaaay better than stock (2x6 vs 2x4? LOL) but after about 100 miles I’m wondering why my Russell Day Long (and my GS12!) is in the garage! Thanks in advance and enjoy your work!
hey buddy just found this video and subscribed to your channel ( I live in fairbanks ) me and my wife just rode my wr250r to the arctic circle with a ton of gear would have been nice to each have one watching the trip,,you ever get up this way again let me know 2 wr's are better than one ride safe bro,,,liked (thumbs up )
Hello and thanks for the fun. Do you wash your bike daily - so far every shot shows a clean bike!! I ride a KLR and I can go 60, so I guess that makes me a speed demon:):)
LOL, I had a good bely laugh when you mentioned Goodland, KS. I know exactly where that is at. I stayed at 'hotel casey' last year there, which mostly consists of sleeping behind the Casey gas station when I pulled in tired after midnight.
Hi Tim, great videos! Thank you. I am planning to ride to Alaska next June myself, so these are very helpful. Questions: a) Other than 'slowing it down', what were your other reasons to switch from a 1200 GS to a small bike?b) Why did you pick the WR250 and not a 650cc single cyl like the Kawasaki KLR or Suzuki DR which are built for the kind of riding you do? They are cheaper, simpler, provide better comfort and quicker when needed (on boring long highways).Just curious,
Yup me too, curious about ur switch from 1200 GS ( other that the cost ) also may be you can do a video on how much was the total cost of the trip and duration. last and very important thing... did u take PAPER MAP or GPS
Mark me a third person curious on that one. I've done 5,000 on a 500 CC ride that was about as small as I have ever rode long distance on. I'd be interested to hear that answer. There must have been a thought process behind that idea. Fuel mileage to reduce fuel cost? Smaller bike to reduce that cost?
Greetings from Ireland, just discovered your vids. Enjoying them ever so much! Can I ask why you used your 250 for this big a journey, would the beemer not have been a better option?
Might have been a better option if I was traveling on the Interstate Highways but I was on tiny backroads and lots of miles on the gravel roads in Alaska. The little bike is so much fun and the comments from people I meet on the road are great!
I'm curious; the WR250R has a 35" seat height. I noticed you replaced the original seat with a Day Long Saddle. Did this change the overall reach since the seat is wider? Did you do any links or work to decrease the seat height or are you tall enough to handle the bike with no problem? I have thought of purchasing a WR250R, but have been reluctant since the seat height is so tall.
Yep the seat on the stock WR is sky high. I lowered the back 2 inches and the front about an inch. The Russell with it's extra height brought it back to around 35 inches. I fart every time I get on and off the thing :)
How much off road experience did you have on 2 wheels? Obviously you have tons on 4 wheels. How did that help you on the Dalton? I am finding in my research that people are saying you need a couple years exp off road/trail riding to attempt that stretch of road.
Dont believe a word they are saying. The Dalton is just another dirt/gravel road and dirt and gravel is the same everywhere. There is nothing dangerous about the Dalton...only stupid riders make it so. Just slow down and pay attention like you would on any gravel road and you'll be just fine. Enjoy.
Thank you. I'm a new biker. Got my license at 64. Your trip is inspiring. I saw an old bumpersticker that said, "You won't see a motorcycle outside a shrink's office."
Hey Edward welcome to the insanity! Congrats on getting your license. Hope to see you on the road one day. Ride safe!

Thanks. It would be great to have a riding partner but it is hard to find someone who rides as slow as me haha. That day I was thinking about how far away from home I was and how far I had to go....but...I snapped out of my doldrums and hit the road. Life is good.
Understand. Love the video's.
Boy I cant imagine how many times you had to stop and go to the bathroom with all that coffee you drink. Great videos though!! And love the WR250!
Amazing as usual Tim,ride safe and carry on.
Thanks!
Absolutely stellar series.
Thanks! Much appreciated.
2017 rode from Vero Beach Florida to Utah and back on a Honda 185
I just retired a year ago....the 30,000 sunrises message was right on....
Yep, time goes by fast when you are doing stuff you like....get ready to giddy up!
Inspiring! Curious what garmin you used. Please share and your thoughts on it!!!
I have been planning a trip out west. I have a Ford 150 that pulls a enclosed trailer for my Buell Uly. Got my camp gear but I wont put it on the bike. When I stop at a camp ground, then I will do my riding come back and rest. Then move on to the next place.

will do
Hope you get better soon Theordore.
lol, Gonna cost me 12 bucks and I'm pissed! that caught me off guard, pretty funny sounds like me lol. Awesome video! thanks for posting...
Have always told folks , the best thing you can have on your motorcycle trip is TIME ! If you have time , everything will work out .
Thanks a bunch!
hi, thanks really enjoyed it. what do you think about the new 310 gs for this kind of trip?
Enjoyed the video. Keep them coming.
hey Mr adventure
I thought that was my name,,lol

Scott and Julie seem super cool. I would love to take a big bike trip but summers are my busy months. Maybe one day when I retire if my wife will let me. I drove through a deer at high speed last spring so she is thinking biking is not necessarily safe. I promised her I won't get another bike but the following week there was a Goldwing in my driveway. When she got home i told her happy birthday but two problems; she has no bike licence and it was not her birthday. Oh well I guess I have to drive it on her behalf.
Retire as soon as you can. It's great!
great video...looking forward to the next one. how do you like the bike?
The little bike is too much fun!

Fantastic video! can't wait for part 2 :))
It's almost done....
Building a WR for longer distance. Can I ask what saddle or saddle plus mods you utilize on long distance days? I have the
Seat Concepts and it is waaaay better than stock (2x6 vs 2x4? LOL) but after about 100 miles I’m wondering why my Russell Day Long (and my GS12!) is in the garage! Thanks in advance and enjoy your work!
I used a Russel Day Long Sport seat...worked great.
hey buddy
just found this video and subscribed to your channel ( I live in fairbanks )
me and my wife just rode my wr250r to the arctic circle with a ton of gear
would have been nice to each have one
watching the trip,,you ever get up this way again let me know 2 wr's are better than one
ride safe bro,,,liked (thumbs up )
Hello and thanks for the fun.
Haha funny. I had a good nights sleep at the campground that night.
I wish I was on that trip with you.Like you said I always have to be somewhere else. Roll on retirement
Retirement is great...don't know why I waited so long!
Enjoying your trip but its way too early in the season. I've seen 6" of snow in Yellowstone in early June.
Looks like something that I would love to do, probably go with about 450 - 500 cc bike.
Does your right hand cramp up or your right fingers on your long trips?
Not really...I use a "Wrist Rest" or a "Cramp Buster" on the throttle.
They are cheaper, simpler, provide better comfort and quicker when needed (on boring long highways).Just curious,
Following.
Did you do the run?
Interested as well
Not really a tiny bike but decent video
Greetings from Ireland, just discovered your vids. Enjoying them ever so much! Can I ask why you used your 250 for this big a journey, would the beemer not have been a better option?
Might have been a better option if I was traveling on the Interstate Highways but I was on tiny backroads and lots of miles on the gravel roads in Alaska. The little bike is so much fun and the comments from people I meet on the road are great!
Great video. I am surprised you didn't use the larger IMS 4.7g fuel tank for a trip like this. How much gas did you carry on the bike?
Nice! Love the commentary.
also love the ambient background music
Nice video Tim....looking forward to the rest of the ride!! How did the Wolfman side panniers do on your trip?
The Wolfman stuff is just about perfect for me. Not a single problem at all the whole trip.

This is great! I'm really looking forward to the next episodes. :-)

I fart every time I get on and off the thing :)
hey just rode my wr250r to the arctic circle with the wife on the back
AWESOME TIM, loved every bit, great ending message as well. Looking forward to the rest.
Thanks Nutty. Compliments coming from a pro like you are much appreciated.
hey nuttynu
I see we watch the same great video's
Yes, this is Tim, the guy we share rooms at the Dawson City during the D2D this summer.
Love a road trip thanks nice job.
What made you decide to go to such a smaller bike?
How much off road experience did you have on 2 wheels? Obviously you have tons on 4 wheels. How did that help you on the Dalton? I am finding in my research that people are saying you need a couple years exp off road/trail riding to attempt that stretch of road.
Dont believe a word they are saying. The Dalton is just another dirt/gravel road and dirt and gravel is the same everywhere. There is nothing dangerous about the Dalton...only stupid riders make it so. Just slow down and pay attention like you would on any gravel road and you'll be just fine. Enjoy.
Hey bud! I moved to Raleigh . If your in the area let me know.
Sounds good. Give me a shout at timtew@icloud.com sometime and we can meet up.
Awesome Tim!!
hey bill
