I can understand the dissatisfaction with how it ended, but I don't agree with it. I feel like Grace's dissatisfaction boils down to "It wasn't fair that all these people sacrificed for John, only for him to die anyway."
I agree that it's not fair. It was a tragedy (in the literary sense of the word). It's like 'Romeo and Juliet', or to be a little more contemporary, like 'The Mist'. The death was senseless, and that's kind of the point. 🤷🏾‍♂️

John Wick showcases why stunt directing and work deserves to be awarded not just SAGs, but the Academy Awards. It’s refreshing to see well choreographed action sequences/filmmaking that is well staged and planned and not cut up in the editing bay. I’m not just saying that because of this film, but previous John Wick films (Atomic Blonde, Mad Max Fury Road) are deserving. Similar to the SAGs, I’m sure they could find 3 films to nominate each year and stunt work isn’t just an “action film” thing. Comedies, war films, musicals, and horror films (like Malignant) would be in consideration. Sigh, when will the Academy learn.

@Aaron-zl5gq No stakes?? What film were you watching? John had to kill Killa in order to rejoin his "family" in order to qualify for the dule with de Gramont. His life and Winston's were tied to the stipulations of that dule and Killa himself wasn't exactly easy to kill. Then you had de Gramont's main henchman, Chidi who was near unstoppable and it wasn't even John that killed him. Throw in the tracker who was a wild card and could have killed John on several occasions had he wanted to.
Wick is a legend in his universe for a reason. The first film makes a big deal about him being the bogeyman and the 3 subsequent films illustrate why. These films and the character deliver on what they set out to do but to say there's no stakes is just patently untrue.

Grace, if John Wick is truly and completely dead, I’ll eat my shoe. There’s NO way that ending was final. They were going to film JW 4 & 5 at the same time, which should automatically clue ANYONE in that there’s more story here.
My theory: Winston is staging John’s “death” to stealthily move him into a position where he can take out one or more of the High Table. Or to at least get the upper hand on them without anyone realizing.
And I know it’s sometimes done on tombstones, but the fact that there’s no date on John’s makes me think pretty strongly that he’s not actually buried there.
Things are way too open ended for John to just die like that. It’s way too emotionally empty and too unfulfilling story-wise to be his end.

While I agree that parts of the movie lost track a bit compared to the last ones, I interpret the ending quite differently, maybe its my wishful imagination but, if you pay close attention to the wording on many characters on the consequences of John Wick beating the High Table, one is that he would be a "Saint" to perhaps all the hitmen that were pursuing him, they would know beating the table can be done. At the end John tells a now fully reinstated Winston to "take him home" he sits down then passes out, we really don't know if he actually dies. Then in the tombstone sequence the bowery king asks where do you think he is? Heaven or Hell? Winston hesitates slightly and replied "O don't know ". Because now that John is not only presumed dead, he is also free from the High Table, they will not see him coming for each and every one of the members of the High Table, perhaps he will recruit help from those the table has wronged through the years, maybe that's what will develop on the Continental series. Anyway that's whT I think.

I don't know how anyone who is a fan of this franchise could not love this movie. They took everything to new heights and it was a roller coaster ride from start to finish. The dragons breath shotgun was one of the coolest weapons I've ever seen. Mr. Nobody's character was lackluster and paled in comparison to Halle Berry's character and her usage of her dogs. The ending was shocking despite being foreshadowed many times. But it can also be a misdirect to ensure that his enemies think he's dead and don't hunt him down like Cane's character is dealing with in the end credits.

The death was clearly staged, John's injuries were NOT fatal, especially not when compared to the ending of Parabellum. I absolutely loved it. But I think this is a good ending. I suspect Keanu Reeves is keen to have a break from all the hardcore stunt fighting as well. He moved better in this movie and he seemed slow in the last movie. I wonder if he's injured from many decades of Matrix and John Wick movies.

It's not a good ending. The whole point of John Wick 3 was to stay alive and clear his name. The ending to 4 just makes everything pointless. And now the focus is going to be on the character that killed John Wick. You serious? You want me to root for the man that killed John Wick? Get outta here with that nonsense. Terrible ending.

Your argument that Wick's death is pointless and "what was all this killing for" flows from a bad assumption: that any of the characters in these movies are "good" and don't deserve to die. Charon, (RIP Lance Reddick), though he was but a humble concierge, was the humble concierge of the murder hotel. Everyone he serves is killer for hire and he himself packed the heat as well.
But what was the point of all this? What would have made for a satisfying ending? To defeat the High Table? To kill 'em all? Bring balance to the force? The only real victory for these people is to either get out of the assassin world themselves or to help someone else get out. Living in a world where someone could kill you with a pencil at any moment is not a good place to be. That's why so many of them want to help John, because his victory is their victory.
John's death was his choice. He allowed himself to be mortally wounded to trick the Marquis into leaving himself open for the killing shot. By winning the duel, John finally escaped the assassin world. He managed to help Caine escape too, and saved Caine's innocent daughter (and another dog earlier) which allowed him the tiniest taste of redemption. It was a heroic and, for the baba yaga, a fitting death. Though he lived his life as an assassin, he died as a husband. That's the point of all this.

I honestly thought that John Wick dying at the end, as sad as I was, was the only way it could end for him. He died as soon as he became a free man and that's what he wanted. It was an amazing movie.

As to why Charon was killed: when Winston and John were at his mausoleum, Winston said "when you kill a man, you make him a saint or a martyr. If you let a man live, you make him a traitor or a turncoat." By killing Charon, The Marquis and the High Table could make it seem as though Winston was begging for his life and offered up Charon as a penance, making him a pariah (or Ex Communicado) like John.

I loved the ending! This had to end with John dying and I hope they keep this franchise to these 4, cause it is perfect the way it is. I can't believe you say John is checked out in Osaka, when the Nunchacku sequence was the most impressive display and use of that weapon since Game of Death with Bruce Lee himself. He really showed impressive skills there, also his Judo got even better from the last films. To comment on your non spoiler review..he doesn't fight like black widow. There are no head scissors or Lucia livre moves here like they used for her... He does quite complicated Judo throws and BJJ techniques and he really did an amazing work from a martial arts standpoint.

In the end, John Wick accepted his fate and did what he could so that his friend, Caine, could be with his daughter and Winston could get his life back. He had no way of knowing what was going to happen in the end credits scene and, again, Caine lived by the sword. There is no escape. For as much as the John Wick movies appear to glorify violence in the end violence begets violence and John Wick is a villain who we just happen to root for.
