When this song came out many people didn't know the song's name, they only knew the first verse, so they would go to record stores and ask for that "hip-hop song". Most don't know why it's called hip-hop, well, this song is why.
This busted down doors for rap/hip hop genre to be successful,accepted,well-known.They were the catalyst.

1979. Them brothers was going in, then! The first rap jam that started it all. Lyrically, these mc's were phenomenal. Best rap jam by a group ever. Also you may want to look into RUN DMC, "I'm the King of Rock"!
They WERE the first! This came out in 1979, I was a senior in high school. I loved this song. Knew every word then and still know most of them.
The dance they were doing was the Hustle, common with many disco records and it makes sense because this song was sampled from the Chic record Good Times.

1979. I was 9 when this dropped. There where a lot of groups back then. We would watch their live performance, this was not the first Hip Hop. You’d have to go back to the early 70’s. Although it was the first to go mainstream and be played coast to coast. The first hip hop song recorded was actually by a woman. No one bothered to put Hip Hop on wax back then and the Sugar Hill gang was considered to be a joke. The original Hip Hop Heads felt disrespected.

Maybe not the first rappers, but definitely the first ones to make rap popular. The Chic "Good Times" backing track probably helped a lot.

Hip hop was around NYC since mid 70s. It was 1st successful single release. Recorded w a band because of copyright concerns
This was the first commercial rap tune to explode on the scene they didn't create hip hop a lot of the rhymes were bitten from cool herc and the cats who created the block parties in the Bronx watch some origins of hip hop videos this will be explained great tune none the less, sugar hill was a record labels and these MCs were one hit wonders look at the real pioneers afrikka bambatta, grand master flash and the furious five,and so on !!!!!!

1. Not the first rap single. The first Top 40 Rap single. 2. There may not be any cursing technically, but I'm sure parents don't want to hear their 3 year old rapping about "pleas(ing) you with his little worm, but I can bust it out with my super sperm." LOL. That line just came out of nowhere. I'm sure it was written by Grandmaster Caz like the rest of Hank's lyrics in this song.
