Prince was being a dick and you don't even have to have permission legally to make a song parody.
Al wasn't terribly kind to Eminem though, but in an extremely funny way.
@@aleckelsey2663: Well, Eminem screwed him over; he gave permission for the song, but then after the song was done _rescinded_ permission for the video, leaving Al without a lead video for the entire Poodle Hat album.
He's said that if an artist refuses to be parodied, he backs off.
It's too bad that Weird Al couldn't keep his mouth shut about what song by Prince that he was going to parody. If he wasn't going to do it, then he shouldn't have told the public about it, and just kept it between him and Prince.
My brother took a group of us to celebrate his wife's birthday to a Weird Al concert. We all thought it was a joke. One of the best concerts I've been to
I've been to 6 Weird Al concerts. Two of them were his original songs only tours. What an amazing song writer, performer and his band is incredible. I loved it.

Also, I'd love to see a Weird Al show if he ever came to Australia, but yeah, it's Australia. It's a long way away. 😢 He'd need a lot of spiderman comics and mamas homemade rhubarb pie on his way to see the biggest Lobster, Banana and Pineapple in Australia.
Why would it be a joke?
FACT. I went and saw him in August. It was easily the funniest live anything I’ve ever seen in my life.
Truth. Saw him for the first time a few years ago. Wow. Weird Al exceeded my expectations. I couldn't believe how tight the band was, how GREAT the sound was, and how hysterical the show was.
It's very respectable that Al honored Prince's wishes to not parody his music even after his death. Most people would view an artist's death as a cash opportunity, and Al stuck to integrity. What a guy.
I've been a die-hard Weird Al fan for over 15 years and I don't think I've ever heard the story of how he met his wife. Adorable

Sweetie, I’ve been a Weird Al fan since his music first played on Dr. Demento-over 40+ years ago, well before Madonna popped her first bubble.
You can see how much Weird Al is in love with his wife by the expressions on his face. She is one lucky woman!
That's the first time I've ever heard him go into any detail about his wife. For the longest time all I knew was hes married because he wears a ring. That was really sweet.

I sort of "met" Al through a kind of osmosis. My wife was a producer for NBC in Las Vegas and he came in for an interview. She told him what a fan I was and he gave her an autographed pic addressed to me.
One of my favorite gags in the "Like A Surgeon" video was the opening PA voice paging Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard. Three Stooges reference.
Weird Al is perhaps the most down-to-Earth human being in all of music. I've been a fan of his since the 80s.

When I was around 12 years old another kid and I thought AL should do raspberry beret and change it to raspberry kool-aid. We even wrote lyrics. I guess prince wouldn't have been a fan.

Actually just remembered Tim Hawkins did a parody called Potty Trained, he doesn't ask permission but you're not legally required to. Weird Al is famous enough that it's in good taste for him to ask.
Al's always asked permission and paid every artist he parodied.

@@CaptHayfever I looked it up, and since parodies "add something new" to the song, they usually fall under Fair Use if it follows the legal rules for parodies, and payment is not required even if they're monetized.

prince was about as close to an enlightenment age composer as we have had in the modern era. he already had enough fun being made of him on a personal level. it is not surprising he didnt want that added to.

Prince was widely known to hate covers and found people who do them to be gimmicks and not true artists.
Even Sinead O’Connor! Not a fan of hers apparently 😢 but she’s great. He just didn’t like that she covered in her song without first asking. Like I’ve just heard he was really upset with her, the way I’ve heard her talk on it in tv and media

Homely is a very old word that has always been a nice way of saying ugly. So be aware if someone calls you that, they're not just saying they don't find you attractive, they're saying you're a dog.
I have never thought of homely as a positive. Plain is more positive sounding but similar in meaning
The word "homely" does have different meanings in different countries - in the UK it's used the way "homey" is used in the US, kind of cozy - so while Weird Al meant it as "ugly ", not everyone does!

All other celebrities Weird Al asked were fine with it, because they have a sense of humor and it's an honor. But it was definitely Prince's choice. Another comedian made a funny Prince parody called Poddy Trained, his name is Tim Hawkins and he actually sings better than Weird Al.

@@vonniemichelle3670 I know he was super famous and talented, I'm from Minnesota btw and I heard about him twice today, it was weird. But MJ and Lady Gaga also gave permission to be parodied. Prince did have an ego from what I've heard, it probably didn't help that people practically worshipped him.

Also, I think Prince had his tongue in his own cheek to the point that he seemed to parody himself in a way and I don't think Weird Al could top Prince. In other words I don't think Prince didn't have a sense of humor like some of the all too serious songs Al made parodies of.
