It seems like Steven Spielberg consciously cultivated a safe, healthy, and positive set for these three to be kids on; the way they still seem to so strongly regard their experience making the movie is a testament to his leadership as a director.
I think it’s adorable that, Drew genuinely believed that ET was real, to her he wasn’t a puppet or a doll, he was very real. I love that she formed a profound connection with him, she wanted to be his friend, she would bring him lunch and make sure he wasn’t cold. I think it’s awesome that the other actors who noticed her talking away to ET went to Steven and he then had two puppeteers keep ET alive for Drew, so when they interacted he would respond to her. I’m glad that they kept ET alive and that they kept the magic alive for Drew rather then quash it. I believe that we should keep magic alive for children
And a brilliant tactician. He wanted to get a better performance out of Drew. If she continued to believe E.T. was real, then he WAS and she would react in a believable way.
I saw E.T. when it was released in '82 at some theater (don't remember) in Irvine, California. Such a cool movie for kids and adults alike. Why can't they make movies like this anymore.
It never occurred to me that little Drew would think ET was real. I don't know why her revealing that hit me so hard. Even in corrupt Hollywood she was still just a kid and had innocence and childlike wonder.

I agree, it is a masterpiece. Spielberg didn't have even a fraction of the technology back then that they have today. He still found a way to pull off the movie and make it look like magic. It is a testament to his skills as a filmmaker.
My E.T. story...my dad took me to see the movie, in the theater, when I was 4. When it got to the scene where E.T. was sick and "dying," I turned to my dad and said, "Daddy, E.T. is gonna die." I can't believe that this year marks the 40th. Anniversary of this classic film. I remembered seeing this with my family when we went on a vacation to see family down South in Alabama many years ago! And it did phenomenal business at the box office! Such an amazing film!
Love this! E.T. is one of my all-time favorite movies and it is the film that I have seen the most times in the theater. I will never tire of watching it. 🥰🥰
This is my first movie I’ve ever saw as a kid in 1982 . I was 4 years old when my grandmother took me to the best film ever . This is one of my top 10 movies of all time .
I've always respected Henry Thomas as an actor. For over 40 years, he has been a consistent character actor, without a hint of bad press surrounding him. He may never have become an A-list star, nor do you see his name on the marquee, yet he has always produced quality work, never falling into the "child star" trappings.
@patricklee7241 I thought he was poised to possibly become a reasonably well known adult actor when Legends of the Fall came out and was a success. He had a role in Scorsese's Gangs of New York as well. So he"s worked with some of the big directors of our times. But despite not becoming a star as an adult, he has worked very steadily and in some good projects.
I watched E.T. so many times; years later when I had my kids I would played the movie for them on VHS (If you remember what's that), and then on DVD. This is true, my son was scared of E.T. and never wanted to see the movie but my daughter loved it, and I will occasionally repeat to her what E.T. would tell Elliot before he was ready to go back home: "Be good" and "I'll be right here, pointing to her heart! Wonderful movie, amazing actors, great director, and incredible memories!!

She is the sweetest girl ever
omg, this is crazy, i love this interview reunion. Wish there's should have made another movie together with the same cast and director Steven, he should have come up with some ideas, that would be a huge hit!
It's great to see these amazing actors together again. I absolutely love this movie! It's special and will always be treasure by so many. One line that stands out to me is when ET says, "Phone home," and it's so cute the way he says Elliott's name, too. Thanks so much for sharing this reunion! ❤😊
I was 8 years old in 1982 when my family immigrated from East Germany to the US, and E.T. was the first movie I saw in the theater. I didn't know any English yet, but I understood the context and pure emotion of this film. I remember crying so hard as a child, and I still cry so hard every time I watch it. Seriously one of the best movies of all time!
loved the xfinity commercial where elliot reunited for one night with E.T. too
Awe i love this! They all love each other like family. It's beautiful. And that story about Steven making sure ET was active for Drew is the cutest! ❤
Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore definitely made that masterpiece happen!!
What sweet stories.
ET is a incredible movie ..with a superb cast ..storyline ..has everything ..gets me every time it's on with a fantastic score.. and one of the saddest endings IL ever see .! I saw this when it came out ther wasn't a dry eye in the cinema.. Spielberg classic at its very best E.T.❤️
I have been waiting for this since the first day of your show. I was a little shocked that you didn't have them on your first show. But, thank you so much for this today.
God everything was so cool .in the 80es .all the great films . Music . Great time to be a kid
I can't believe that this year marks the 40th.
One of my favorite and one of the greatest movies of all time. Dee Wallace has always been so beautiful.
This is such an endearing interview. ❤
This was great! First movie I ever saw in a movie theatre, when I was 3 yrs old! 💕💫
Wow that's amazing. The movie came out before I was born and I loved the movie as a kid.
I absolutely love Drew. She seems like such a sweetheart 💕
This movie is soooo adorable!! A timeless classic!!😊
This is my first movie I’ve ever saw as a kid in 1982 . I was 4 years old when my grandmother took me to the best film ever . This is one of my top 10 movies of all time .
It’s great to see E.T. cast reunite together in honor of its 40th Anniversary!
I've always respected Henry Thomas as an actor. For over 40 years, he has been a consistent character actor, without a hint of bad press surrounding him. He may never have become an A-list star, nor do you see his name on the marquee, yet he has always produced quality work, never falling into the "child star" trappings.
Legends of the Fall and The Haunting on Hill House (Netflix) are the two that stuck with me most for sure
My first movie ever at cinema with school ! Cried and had nightmares for a while ! But loves it in the same time !
I am speechless, I have waited for this moment.
Drew really touched my heart here she has this beautiful pure spirit it’s a great gift she has and I love how she believes in Et he indeed looks so real please keep the pure magic going we don’t want to lose this about ourselves our inner child inside of us ET is one of those special movies that you can love and enjoy time and time again one of my favorite movies thank you Drew.❤️❤️❤️
Such a great and touching movie! One of the best of all time!
Ugh! I need the whole interview!! You're killing me, lol
