Johnny Prine is, was. always will be a legend. I had tickets to see him and he had to cancel the tour when he got sick and he sadly died. You should check out my video on him!

However, there's a little cult of singer-songwriters who come out of the region around North Texas - Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clarke, Terry Allen, Hayes Carll, Phil Lee Joe Ely, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry - they're all English majors (except Allen, who is an architect) and they specialize in these sort of down home, hyper literate, frequently hilarious, frequently heartbreaking story songs. Check out "The Grifter's Hymnal" by Ray Wylie Hibbard or Avery County, I'm Bound to You by Barton Carroll - its this sort of synthesis of American folk tall takes and 19th century Russian miserabilism!
