St. Louis, Missouri: Gateway to the West | Traveling Robert

  • In this week's video we are visiting St. Louis, Missouri: The Gateway to the West.
As it is our tradition lately we are going to do the most important or touristy thing first, and then work our way down in order of priority. The undisputed winner in this city is the Gateway Arch, an engineering and architectural marvel. It is the tallest arch in the world and the tallest monument in the western hemisphere. Its catenary shape makes it perfectly balanced on the ground. It has a unique elevator system that is actually a closer cousin to a Ferris wheel. Due to the nature of the arch a traditional vertical elevator was impractical so they designed this unique contraption for such purpose.
After aimlessly wandering a nearly deserted downtown we decided to visit what is arguably the next best known landmark here: The Anheuser-Busch brewery. They have an excellent complimentary tour in which you visit the Clydesdales and their historic stable, the aging cellar, the also historic brew house and then you get free beer.
After our beer drinking extravaganza we felt it was only appropriate to sample some authentic St. Louis Barbecue, so we went to Pappy's Smokehouse, which didn't disappoint. For desert we decided to try another St. Louis staple, frozen custard. For that we went to Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, in the Dutchtown neighborhood. The area doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to crime rate, but we had no problems.
We stayed two nights at the Casino Queen RV Park, just across the river in East St. Louis, Illinois. From here we continued towards our next destination: Memphis, Tennessee. On the way there we had lunch at another unique and iconic restaurant called Lambert's Cafe, Home of the Throwed Rolls. Eventually we made it our destination, the Tom Sawyer's Mississippi River RV Park in West Memphis, Arkansas.
I hope you enjoy this week's video. See you on the next destination.

Can’t resist throwing out an extra comment today.. this was nice to combine with the new video released this morning. It’s actually good to see snippets of different things in a variety of episodes featuring the same cities and locations. Leaves room for a reason to return and create new content as well as giving room to the information, history etc. instead of cramming it all into one episode, not to mention breathing room for your own enjoyment. Places are always changing too, so that keeps things gratifying. Glad you got to see the Budweiser facility, my husband works for AB and toured it on a business trip a few years ago. He did not return with any sort of pictures so it was great to see it here. Love to experience both the progression and contrasts in style and camera work between then and now. Different, but always good.. never disappointed. Thanks for sharing.🙂

More memories of our transcontinental trip in 2019. St Louis Missouri was one of our stops. We made a beeline for the Gateway Arch. Never seen anything like it, and those little elevators that take you to the top are an engineering marvel!
When we were there there were still signs of the flooding that happened a few months before so there were no Mississippi boat tours available, but we managed to get one on our next stop in Memphis. All the construction in this video was competed and was just beautiful to see. We tried the local delicacy of fried ravioli and dip. Never knew you could do that with ravioli, and it was delicious. There was also a MAJOR game going on at the stadium so it was busy but the town had a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely go again.

Not bad, you definitely made the right calls with Pappy's for the BBQ & Ted Drewes for the Custard. Pappy's is "World Famous" and you got lucky on the timing. The lunchtime line stretches out the door and around the block. One of the things I miss most about living in STL is the Frozen Custard. Not much of it to be found in SW OH. But while the Ted Drewes neighborhood isn't the best place in the world, it's 100 times safer than where you parked your RV ! E. STL is a mini Chiraq. The heavy LE presence at the entrance should have been a clue. Should have gone to the west of the city and parked at Hollywood Casino. Probably wouldn't have charged you nearly as much (if at all) and the area is MUCH nicer, and you could have seen The Missouri River along with the Mississippi. But you really missed several of the better attractions of STL. City Garden & City Museum (both downtown), Delmar Loop (amazing shopping) and of course the "2nd best Zoo in the US", which is free BTW. Just something that made me laugh...when you showed the construction cite and commented about there "having used to have been a beautiful park there". That was Kiener Plaza and the official reason they give for ripping it out was so it could become part of the new Gateway Arch Attraction. But anyone who is from STL will tell you that it was because all the homeless people were using the fountains and pool to bathe in all the time LOL

Every night we passed towns, some of them away up on black hillsides, nothing but just a shiny bed of lights; not a house could you see. The fifth night we passed St. Louis, and it was like the whole world lit up. In St. Petersburg they used to say there was twenty or thirty thousand people in St. Louis, but I never believed it till I see that wonderful spread of lights at two o’clock that still night. There warn’t a sound there; everybody was asleep.

I love your sticker map! Where can I find one? Yeah, because of all the construction at the Arch (they're expanding the national monument) I decided to forgo it altogether and went to Cahokia Mounds instead. Besides, I'd been to the Arch twice before (many years ago my sister and I foolishly opted to climb the stairs instead). I got there about a week after you guys visited the area, and no rain, just hot and muggy. Stayed in a dinky little campground about an hour east of St. Louis off of I-70 because all the SL campgrounds were full. At least it had a cool clean swimming pool. I LOVE SL!!

I found some incredible 5th wheel rigs that have all the comforts of home. (I think it's my wife that needs those!!) What do you think of them... it seems they are easier to attach and detach? Do you know much about them? Thanks - just listening to your CD - I - like many many others find myself singing your theme song !!! ;-)

    • @TravelingRobert
      @TravelingRobert  6 лет назад

I don't know much about 5th wheels only that they are very residential looking and feeling, and it will probably take longer to them up at the campsite. You also have to be more aware of your height and length when traveling. Those who have them swear by them so they must be good. Grand Design comes to mind as a high quality brand.

Thanks as always for taking the time to respond !! You seem very content with your MIcro Minnie since you've had it so many years. Winnebago ought to give you a new one every few years for the great exposure you provide !! (ha ha). I hear you for sure about the height and width issues with a 5th wheel !! I need to rent a smaller Class C just to tryout this lifestyle. I'm getting way ahead of myself. Thank again Robert !! You should try the original Czech Budweiser. When ut comes to taste it is vastly superior over the US Budweiser. The Czech beer is sold in the US under the name Czechvar.

I just found your channel and am enjoying it. If you haven't been to Kansas City, MO, you must come visit. We have a livelier downtown, a better brewery, and way better barbeque! :)

St. Louis' microbreweries blow KC's out of the water. And KC BBQ is okay, but doesn't live up to its hype. I will give you the first one though. :)

Really nice job for STL and hope you come back soon now that the Arch grounds and Keiner Plaza are redone. Shame on you...you didn't go to the famous zoo? Museum of Transportation in the county! Faust Park! Forest Park! Formerly known as the Jefferson Memorial, The MO History Museum. You are lucky there is not much traffic in the city of STL...all the traffic is in the burbs now...and the reason for the color of the brick is due to the use of the area's dirt. Might check out a site I like called builtstlouis.net.
