If you are looking to improve your pixel art skills in a structured education, would mean the world to me if you checked out my NEW Pixel Art Course! www.gamedev.tv/p/pixel-art-fundamentals?affcode=45216_xckdrd_z
Yo my guy, bit of a strange request but I just started developing art for a game my mate and I are making, can I just run the syle by you to see what an experienced pixel artist will tell me to look out for/ maybe reconsider?
The hardest part of starting pixel art is not actually drawing, but developing an eye that can tell whats good and whats wrong so that you can produce something with a little bit of trial of error, instead of drawing over and over and finally giving up. These tips really help me get through that rough beginner stage, thanks man!
I'm struggling with this right now. I've watched like 100 tutorials for pixel art and tried on Aseprite myself to make a Mage character, the staff weapon for that mage, and an enemy slime and its been super difficult. I haven't given up yet though, still trying my best because I wanted to make a game that I would personally enjoyed playing and share it with other people someday!
As someone who's painted digitally for over 6 years, the mindset that has helped me the most is about The Hand and The Eye! Both are needed in the end. The Hand is your ability to draw, and The Eye is your ability to judge what looks right or wrong. When you draw something that you're really proud of, you have drawn to the best of the current capability of your Eye. When everything you draw looks bad in your opinion, that just means your Eye has taken a bit of a leap in its growth, and so you can understand better that it is wrong than you could before, but don't worry! Your Hand will catch up soon enough. Viewing it from this angle has helped me an endless amount so I'll never stop preaching about it to anyone else who's starting art lol Also @glezisbauk4732 hmm... I personally think that if you can't move your hand at all you won't be able to realize your artistic idea even if you know it really well... So I think it might be better to think of it as a balance between the two! Even if that balance is 30/70 (Hand/Eye) and not 50/50
My biggest challenge starting is definitely proportions xD Atm I tend to make my character, and then shrink it again and again as I remove unesseesary pixels while still keeping it's identity.
“Stop showing me the deepest fears that make cthulu shit his pants at the thought of thinking of it i JUST WANT TO DRAW A *_FUCKING PIXEL FROG._* DAMN IT I MADE THE BIG BANG, WHY CANT I DRAW THE PUPILS? WHYYYY” - Every pixel artist that has ever tried to shade lighting without any experience
god damn it not again, i accidentally made a terrifying monster that could haunt you and your next 3 generations nightmares, i just wanted to draw a torch 😔
People, please look for references, don't be scared of "copying" styles. It really helps A LOT and helps you understand and remember the shapes and colors of things
Ok, I'm also just another beginner. But what helped me (going from trying hard to get at least something to: i can get an ok looking result in 1-2 hours) immensely was finding some rules for myself. And he talked a bit about this in this video. I can confirm, the is the best thing you can do. Set some rules like "for each color only one lighter shade and two darker shades" or "the light comes here" and "shiny textures get an additional brighter shade". How to get to those rules? Experimenting a lot, looking at other peoples work. Just look pixelart you like, from one artist. Look at how they do things. Try to figure out which rules they follow and so on. And once you get better it's time to add your own touch. But... this is how it works for almost everything you can learn on your own (which is basically everything :P)
me and some of my friends wanna spend the next few years making a mod for a game called terraria, when i got asked i was instantly on board and said i wanted to make the sprites, i got myself aseprite and started making sprites while quickly realising that its alot harder than it looks, no matter how hard i try i just cant make good sprites but these videos are really helping so thank you!
A tip I would give is if you're using a grid or pattern. Put something that breaks the pattern like a brick wall instead of plain boring bricks add mossy or cracked bricks and add details that are unique to one or two bricks so it look better
Great video as always! Personally I found that I learned a lot by looking at the pixel art of other skilled pixel artists. I quickly noticed that they can make incredibly and detailed looking pieces with simple techniques and very few colors. When I started with pixel art, I would use a lot of different colors for shading and highlighting but upon looking at others work, I noticed that most of them when for example making a bush would use the main color (green), one darker shade and a lighter shade for highlights. Look at others artwork and learn from them and get inspired by them, but don't copy their art style 1 on 1
Finally putting the axe to the grindstone and trying to get started in game dev after years of kinda just sitting on it and working a bit here and there to get pieces together before giving up, I'm realizing that jumping into the deep end on 3D gfx and trying to figure out how to use tools and editors like Blender just based on Tutorials with no formal graphics design knowledge is like jumping into white water rapids without knowing how to swim....I'm now resigning myself to learning 2D first and then wading slowly into 3D after I have developed my first game. Then I realized things about 2D that before should've been obvious but weren't really like you obviously can't control the way flat images look with a light source or shading external to how sprites and things are developed, I think I'm realizing that while simple tools are nice for beginners, to make a 2D game pop and stand out these days you need more detailed images which to make better and faster you would need some nice tools which use inherent shading and light algorithms to make the resulting images really stand out and appealing for the eye....I am wanting to figure out how to do this myself and find the best and relatively easiest software to use so I can get started quickly in my endeavor to create some cool 2D games. My background really isn't at all in graphic design or art but actually in coding and development...any tips would be greatly appreciated...
I used to do hand drawn illustrations (digital) and one day, I was like “well, how hard to create pixel art, really could be?” and boy oh! Boy, it's not as easy as it looks like. After many failed attempts, I quit and move on. It was just as recently that I started to learn how to do properly do it, and I'm loving it. 😄
Hi Reece! I LOVE this content! I really like the sprites at 4:32. Could you please share to us where we can find more of the art behind that sheet/game? Trying to get more inspired! Thanks in advance!
Hey Philips! Glad you enjoyed the video. I made that little Sprite sheet a while ago on a live stream I am pretty sure. I don't really have anymore assets in the set as it was a one day event just for fun, good luck and stay focused on growth 😁
Dude you’re like the combination between an guide maker/real good artist and one of those online sales content dudes with those pyramid kinda “buy this and you’ll be rich too” kinda guys

I struggle with literally everything and every time I try I get put off after a few attempts when it starts off or turns out bad.
5 years doing pixelart? I'm pretty sure I saw you making your very first serious pixel art about 2 years ago. It was a bit after I started and that's how I found your channel. And did someone really paid you thousands for a pixelart? Seams a LOT even for a very high level artist that would do a fully animated character.
When I do commissions it's for more long term projects (typically 4-8 weeks of part-time work) the amount ends up in the thousands because of the amount of art being produced. I'm very fortunate to get the opportunities I do, but yeah I hope that makes more sense!
I think colour palettes are perfectly okay to get started or when creating video games to get consistent colours, however try to slowly learn from palettes you use to see how they create their colours so you can create your own down the line!
