I love your teachings on Silhouette Studio, I downloaded it and tried to self teach I ended up giving up. I would love to see more. You are very talented, thank you for great content.
I have a Cricut Maker and just purchased a Silhouette Cameo 4 and love to see you doing Silhouette Studio as well as Cricut Design Space! Because I’m new with Silhouette I really enjoy your video today!!
The crosshatch pattern worked great. I did tighten the hatch I couldn’t see any lines skipped. I used an anodized aluminum disc. I was going to use the lines but after seeing your video you saved me time and materials. Thank you! Your coaster should say I don’t Cricut without silhouette design. 😉
This is so informative! I have been very intimidated by the engraving tool and this gave me the confidence to try. But by far the best part for me was your amazing instruction on silhouette studio and saving files for exporting to design space! I didn’t know I could do that and you just changed my crafting game!! Thank you Karley!
Thank you for this tutorial! I was going crazy trying the replicate the hatches in Illustrator, but this convinced me I just needed to take the plunge on Silhouette Studio. In fact, I have an engraving project going right now. I'm excited to see how it turns out!
If you want to get rid of the lines, use a fiberglass brush. You can put fiberglass bristles in a mechanical pencil to use it on small projects. This works on plastics. You can also use a fine file like the ones used in jewelry making or electronics. These will work for metal or wood.
Thanks sooo much. I use Silhouette software all the time to create art for my Cricut. I think Silhouette's software excels in the same way Cricut Maker's use of materials excel. Thanks for not making me feel like a "crafting polygamist" for using both to reach my project goals. I'm checking out the laser cutter you mentioned, too, and bookmarking your video for when I have time to engrave. I've had a Silhouette for quite a while. I bought a Cricut first, but it began mis-feeding the mat one week after the warranty ran out. That was added frustration because the machine sat unused for the first few months until I had time to sit down and learn how to use it. Cricut wouldn't extend the warranty a week, so between barely getting to use it, and no support, I went with Silhouette for my replacement. I loved Silhouette because I didn't have to buy cartridges. It's software is awesome, particularly the upgraded versions and it does things I could only do in Adobe Illustrator otherwise. However, lately, I've begun to miss not being able to use all the different materials Cricut Maker allows for, so I'm giving Cricut another chance. I bought the Maker. I've already cut fabric and I'm very happy with the results. I just hope the Maker lasts as long as my now aging Silhouette. I look forward to checking out your other videos.
I am glad you shared this with us and Cricut. It is now May 31, did Cricut get back to you?? I am not buying their machine until it's working precisely.
I followed up, but I assumed there has been limited time to test since the cricut headquarters are still observing social distancing guidelines and most employees can’t go to the office. :/ I should clarify that the engraving tool works great! In this video, I’m teaching a “hack.” I assume cricut will eventually come out with their own vector fill technology that will work. I like hacking things, but this is not recommended by cricut.
I’ve been using silhouette for near on 7 years now, and had no idea I could do some of those things 😂, I’m terrible for not using that software lol thanks for the video, I’m jumping ship and getting a maker soon! Can’t wait!!!!
This was so helpful!!! I was looking everywhere how to do a foil quil fill in letters and it would be the same technique than this engraving but this silhouette software makes it easier..would you do more tutorials on the software with tips for using it in different projects? Thsnk you!
Thank you for doing this. I tried to use the tool in my maker and it was a disaster. I also did not know I could use Silhoutte with Cricut. I have both. Now if I can find your blog.
I loved the Glowforge! Of course, mine was sitting there and did nothing! So I sold it. I paid $2500 in Sept 2015 and I never received it until Dec 2017. Yes, I was one of the crazy first adopter. When I sold it, I got $2200.
this is AMAZING please make so many more silhouette tutorials. i just bought the business version just because of this video and i dont even have a cameo!!!
This was a fabulous video. If the lines are occurring in different areas, it makes me wonder if you load it through a second time, whether it would fix the mixed lines. Looking forward to trying this - awesome !!

Thanks Karley, really creative idea to engrave with a pattern fill. This was my first look at the Silhouette software. I would like to see more tutorials showing how to use Silhouette Studio.

The Cricut software is limited. So I am unable to do what I need in it, but can use other design programs to do what I need. I would recommend a cricut for vinyl and heat transfer vinyl- but would not recommend it for engraving. I’d recommend the glowforge for engraving. glowforge.us/r/ZGVHHUNH

May I ask how many gb RAM your laptop has please? Thanks in advance x

This is a great tutorial. Thank you. What specifically is it that Cricut design studio doesn't do? Is it the fill in the lettering? I am waiting delivery of my new Cricut Maker so I'm very new to Design Space.
New to Cricut and don’t know what tools go which which housing eg the engraving tool goes with the scoring housing. Also what jobs use which tools? Complete basics for some, but don’t want to buy equipment I don’t need. Thanks
Do you think it's possible to engrave deep enough on acrylic to use as stamps for patterns on clay? I'm just wondering how long this design took and if the machine could handle something that detailed.
@@KarleyHall I'm sorry for being so dense, but, when I see a totally filled in font I do not see lines in the font. I'm not talking about outlined ones. So, that is what I need help with, I cannot tell if they used lines to fill it in and if they did is that not what we want anyway? I am so confused by your last answer
@@suestracks When you see a filled font, imaginee the cut path your machine will follow. It would only cut the outline, but since there is material, it appears to be filled in. Does that make sense? ruclips.net/video/Coi_hxBaVWQ/видео.html I think I do a better job explaining this concept in this video :)
Can you tell me what you use the silhouette program versus what comes with circuit design studio? I use a macbook & when I look for that silhouette app it defaults to the curious design studio. Thanks & I loved your video!
@@KarleyHall unfortunately it's a known issue with silhouette, and there is no amount of updating that's going to fix it until they actually fix the issue within the app. those of us with hiDPI (retina) displays get to experience a pixellated Design Studio (fun!). According to their CS, they've been "working on it" since the first retina macbooks dropped in 2013, so I'm not holding my breath. Weird how every other software on the planet managed to figure out retina displays but not Silhouette!
I use silhouette studio and other design program when I can’t use cricut design space. Cricut design space is pretty limited- so adding another program will help you get even more out of your machine.

The thickness is probably the reason for the lines.

Hi Karley, Great tutorial thank you. I'm a newbie. Can you do things like this on a maker 3 with no mat? Or should I buy a mat for my maker 3? Thanks
You can absolutely do this with the maker 3 but you’ll need a mat and the engraving tip with the quick swap tool :)
Could I do this to my sunglasses for logo?
Yes please to the tutorials, thank you
great video - just getting started! Which laser cutter do you have? Couldn't find the link - thanks!
Laser Cutter/ Glowforge: glowforge.us/r/ZGVHHUNH I have the pro version!
More Silhouette Studio tutorials!
Thanks Karley!
Very informative video def going to reference this A LOT!
Great tutorial, thank you. Could you use a font that is already solid?
Most fonts that appear “solid” will only engrave as an outline. But if the font is solid because it’s filled in with lines, then yes! That’ll work!
@@KarleyHall How would I know the difference?
When you engrave- if it’s just an outline, it’s won’t be filled, but if you see lines filling the letter in, it’ll be filled in :)
Such an informative tutorial, thank you.
Can you tell me what you use the silhouette program versus what comes with circuit design studio? I use a macbook & when I look for that silhouette app it defaults to the curious design studio. Thanks & I loved your video!
I use both! But cricut design space doesn’t have the tools needed to do this!
@@KarleyHall was that the part where you were able to add multiple lines to make the engraving fuller/denser/darker?
@@jazprncess yes! Exactly that :)
i'm jealous of you and your non-blurry silhouette design studio :( stupid thing is blurry beyond comprehension on my macbook!
Are you using the latest version? It may be time for an update!
Hey i just got my cricut maker yesterday. I would like to know what is the difference in using Silhouette and Design space cricut?
I use silhouette studio and other design program when I can’t use cricut design space. Cricut design space is pretty limited- so adding another program will help you get even more out of your machine.
so helpful thanks. But why not design in cricut design space?
You can! Cricut design space doesn’t currently offer a way to fill the font. So you’d just engrave the outline :)
Karley Hall wow that was a quick response. Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much for your great video. I'm asking you if I can use the fill text options in basic version of software too. :-)
You can use it, but need business edition to export it and bring it into cricut!
Karley Hall Thank you ❤️
Great video, you got a new subscriber!
Too cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you try this with the max recommended thickness to see if the lines were there?
T. Smith I tried a few different thicknesses and gaps were there on every piece.
GREAT project!
