- Our coolant filter exploded, so we had to replace it anyway, and we decided to do it properly (even if it cost us). We hope this will save us some money long term, and even improve tool life and the finish of our parts! How can a coolant filter do such a thing? Well, my friend, you're just going to have to watch to find out.

Thanks for all the pearls of wisdom over the years! Here's one for you, get a Samsung Smartthings hub for your shop with leak detectors. I have one under my cnc coolant tank in case it ever leaks. You can also put one under that HVAC units, water tank ETC. If you have 5 machines the 5 sensors and the hub will cost under $200. You can also add lots of other sensors, building security etc.

Pro tip: If you use red loctite on your pipe threads and give it 12hours to set you can clock your fittings and they will be leak free so you could orient your gauge.
While working as a machinist for one of my past employers, they have a 2 stage filter system after a 100 psi but before the 2000 psi pump. We changed the bags every 2 weeks. Although we ran a lot of rough carbon steel with rust and scale 24-7.
If anyone else is considering doing this, do what John did and get a filter with 3 bolts that clamp the lid on. The style I got is a ring style clamp and it can be much more of a pain to use, especially if its designed to have a spring hold the filter in place.
Differential pressure gauge and switch (for alarm) would be easier to read and provide a reminder in case everyone forgets to check the differential pressure across the filter.
Pro tip: There are differential hydraulic pressure gauges which are much more sensitive and easier to read. Automatically does the math and basically results in a "clog meter"!

I'd monitor the pressure difference and the swarf buildup and when you figure out the best time to replace the filter make note of the pressure differential and then install a pressure switch set to that pressure differential and have that generate an alarm or turn on a warning light. There should be a couple days grace so that the warning light could go on just as you leave and the system should be fine for the 7 hours or more until you come in the next day.

I was just looking for this video, getting tired of fines in my coolant - even though we have an MP systems with filter bags, the fines still get through!
Having two filters so you can switch to a new filter on the fly with out having to decompress the whole system so you don’t have to stop is never a bad idea.
You guys should get the diverter for that zebra skimmer. We recently upgraded and I was curious about how much coolant was getting tossed from the skimmer bucket. It's almost a 5 gallon bucket of mixed coolant every week (running the skimmer when the machine is powered on, so 8 hours a day)
Great upgrade that will pay it's self off in a very short amount of time.

You should have some kind of indicator on the pressure relief so you know if its diverting the coolant.

We use those plastic canister filter holders at work. We are only filtering chilled water through 5 micron cartridge filters. In the 5 years that I have worked there I have not seen one of those canisters break like that. Ours are mounted on plastic thermoforming machines, so there is a lot of vibration, pounding and shaking going on there. I wonder if the oils and the pressure you are running at had more to do with the failure? It could also be water hammering. Or a combination of all that. Anyway the new system looks really nice and should do you just fine.
People are forgetting the price of coolant, the price of burning out the pump "running dry for hours," and the tools and don't forget the cleanup. It's cheaper to do it right.

You should rig up a electric pressure gauge I the post-filter side, with an Arduino, link it up to IfTTT, and link it to your machine. That way, you can have it stop lights out machining if the pressure drops really low. (Besides indicating a clogged filter, it would also alert you if a pipe breaks and you loose all coolant.) You could also have it alert your phone when the pressure gets to a predetermined threshold, so you can know when to change the filter.

In Australia contact Pearl Filtration. We use 2 inline. A reusable mesh bag prefilter for chunky swarf and a felt disposable filter.
We had a filter very much like that one fail the same way on our house water main. I think it is a design flaw on the threads. Maybe inside corners are too sharp and should have more radius.

Also betcha lunch the continuous pressure cycling is the biggest part of your issue with the plastic bowls.
We have an aluminum bowl containing the filter for the through spindle coolant...has never failed yet.
The parts list in a blog with schematics would be nice for anyone doing this in the future!
So you have to filter before the pressure is added? I mean the skimmer is sitting in an atmospheric pressure tub. Then it is pressurised. Why not filter it before it hits the pump without the pressure vessel. I guess getting the fluid through it would be harder but it is an option.

The plastic good go bad yes, however I think the main reason for the failure was running 300 psi through the filter.
In Australia mains water pressure is about 100 psi.

John as a fellow Australian myself.... what are you talking about? 300psi was coming from the pump. Where was the water mains even attached to anything here? How is that even relevant?

From my under standing;
coolant tank -> screened -> coolant pump -> "John's 20 micron water filter" -> Spindle.
I've assumed John put the plastic filter housing as the last item on the line, (before it's delivered to the machine) so it's getting the full 300 PSI of coolant.
So from that I deducted that the failure was from running the filter housing with too much pressure. Considering it looks like it failed between the threads of the housing where there is least material.

Any reason for putting the filter post-pump rather than pre-pump? Seems like the latter would keep the crap out of your pump
The pumps are typically sump style. So there is no real good way to do that.
The pump sucks coolant directly from the bottom of the coolant tank. There are no hoses you could hook up this type of filter to before the pump. There may be some sort of in tank screen filter that would limit the amount of junk sucked up by the pump but this filter won't do that.
And Pumps that have an hose on the suking side donnt like filters betwen them and the Tank (i have tried this and it takes sometimes only the filter to loose coolant flow)
Just put a panel filter vertically in the tank anywhere between the pump and were the machine dumps the used coolant in. Essentially dividing the tank into two sections, clean and dirty. No need to worry about gauges or fancy relieve valves. If the coolant is higher on the dirty side it’s time to change filter.
@@kanoa9321 thats offcurse an option but you should not do this because you get chips inside your tank and get bactieria grow. Best filtration is befor the tank and should always mayn focus and if it doesnt work you can go to separate the tank but only by filtering big parts not fine filtering (this needs presure to work). And dont forget to clean your tank on an regulare basis.
One thing not sure about, the coolant at the safety valve is "dirty" right? And, if I understand correct, the hose from the safety valve is connected to the "clean" coolant on the T from the canister filter...so are you not putting some "dirty" coolant to the "clean" side from that safety valve, right after the check-valve?

That only broke because someone broke it. lol.. Either over tightening it or wrenching on it sideways and cracked it... and I can already tell that tape let go and those gauges broke on the floor. I'm starting to see a pattern here. ahaha.
What is the part number for the filter?
I need to add a filter to my machine but was wondering if these filter canisters are 100% reliable and safe to use with coolant systems. I guess you guys answered that question after all they are engineered for "water" dah! how long were those on the system and dose anyone know if the type of coolant has more or less effect on the plastic canister? Im running Synergy 735.

Sometimes you can't help it. Also, if the person putting it together isn't completely incompetent, they will figure it out.

I have a new knife I just bough in the 2600 numbers I think the bearings have something wrong with them , it’s different than my other two , it’s real gritty on the open and close and it doesn’t close All the way by its self , how would I get a set of bearings sent to me

I would have expected to see the check valve before the filter, so the canister stays full of coolant. Less water hammer eververy time the machine does a tool change.
900 Bucks is certainly less expensive than running the machine for the whole night with a broken filter bottle and spilling all coolant on the floor.

Wait, "a lot of times [CNC] machines don't come with coolant filters..." Which CNC manufacturer is making machines without a coolant filter? (I'm not doubting you, I just am Chris which $hitty CNC manufacturer thinks it's alright to not filter a liquid, containing metal chips, that's going through a pump.)
I'm not sure many manufacturers have a filter before the pump. For Haas, the filter is an optional upgrade. DMG Mori didn't include one on John's mill, and Nakamura didn't include one on his lathe. Neither of those manufacturers are anything close to low-end.
Ah, Sky -- please tell me you have a lock out protocol you follow, and you locked out the system before you popped the filter cover?
