How To Clean & Restore Coolant Tank - PERMANENTLY

- Its been 5 years and I haven't cleaned my car coolant tank, therefore, I decided to use an easy method to clean it.
Things I used in cleaning:
1. H₃NSO₃ - Sulphamic Acid Mixture;
2. Sonax Ultra Cleaner;
3. Dishwasher salt;
It was the hardest to get the results was the yellowness of the coolant tank. Scrubbing is dead useless here, since the yellowness you can see on coolant tanks is the result of a chemical reaction. The only solution is to whiten bleach out the ugly yellow color out of the coolant expansion tank.

I wanted to thank you. After several different levels of attempts, soaps, bleach, and had minimal success with acetone and bolts, I went to a home store and got some of your recommended sulfamic acid crystals ( in the flooring grout section). I mixed it to medium concentration in the tank, then again the next day at high concentration rate for the last little dirty patches inside of the tank. I did agitate it a few times to get the deep carbon builds and rust stains out, but just sitting overnight full did most of the work. Much improved! Greatly appreciate it.
Did you try vinegar and baking soda? That usually is good at removing tough stuff.
Restoring the coolant tank costed me more then an new one, had to buy acid and a dishwasher

For those who are asking, sulfamic acid can be bought at a hardware big box store in crystal form. It's normally used to clean rust and grout and mortar haze. A 1lb. tub of sulfamic crystals is less than $8. All you do is follow the instructions and dissolve it in water. Plastic itself is non-reactive to acids; that's why containers for acid products are made of plastic (and it's cheaper than glass and won't shatter). Plastic is engineered to be fairly resistant to many solvents, so you're not going to run into trouble with it being chemically damaged unless you start using things like acetone or paint stripper.

You are right. The metal sleeved into the plastic (water and gas tight under pressure) has miraculously got ‘clean’.
LOL right. Like the engine building channel where they start with a junkyard engine, but after the teardown they realize nothing is salvageable so they replace everything with new and factory reconditioned parts. I think they used the valve cover, everything else was new.

This is not the same tank...... look carfully all scratches and some plastic production mark are different...and only the cap is the same with his scratches ....you can't bring a used tank 100% new without any scratches... come on guys... open your eyes ... maybe that system works... but I don't believe it can bring like this....... totally brand new LOLLLL

I just wasted $14 on some H3NSO3 for a translucent fuel tank cleaning with Zero results after 24 hours. I imagine a lot of other people are going to have the same results without this crucial detail. Is it 3/4 cup per gallon? Stronger or weaker. It would be easy to add what you used to the description. Thanks.

It turned out so well the I suspected a new part was purchased and swapped for the “after”.
It took hours for this man to clean a reservoir but took me 2 hours to clean and restore shine to the whole engine bay

@@raymondrace4837 just use hydrochloric acid - it's cheap and works better than many rust removers! good rust removers contain hydrochloric acid and/or phosphoric acid, that's all the magic behind them;) for removing rust and soaking bigger plastic parts just buy the cheap acid and save money!

That will work, providing the plastic isn't degraded and brittle from years of heat in the engine compartment. I've seen some tanks that just fall apart.

For some cars they really arent made anymore, ofcourse if you have a car that as 10 or 15 years it´s cheaper and easier to buy a new one.
Can clean one using Red Devil crystal lye with clorox added. Any hydrocarbons, glycerins such as ethylene glycol are rendered with the lye, just as lye and fats/oils are used in soap making, and the clorox is a bleaching agent that actually adds power when mixed into the hydroxide of the crystal lye.
The dishwasher part was a great touch 👍👍

Since the Sulfamic Acid won't react to plastic, would this be an excellent way to clean a gas tank (a removed gas tank off a small vehicle), my 97 Altima has been sitting up so long with some gas in it, when I replaced the fuel pump (because it stopped working) the fuel pump stopped working because of varnish goo in the gas, so I have to remove the tank and clean it, scrub it actually, that is how thick the varnish film is, must be scrubbed. Im thinking, to pouring enough of the acid in the tank to submerge the bottom, let it sit for 24 hrs later, then flip it and let it sit for another 24 hours, then rinse it out with some baking soda and water to change the remaining acid to a base.
What do you think? Good Idea or Bad Bad Idea - and if Bad can you explain why?

The problem with these is not the color of aging it is actually they become cracky and fragile. The plastic loses it's strength due to heat and cold cycles and chemical reactions that occur. Better buy a new one for 10 or 20 bucks.
Couldn’t of said it better myself. Why restore one of these tanks when it’s already compromised and can leave you stranded. This was only satisfying to see how clear he got it
That's a good answer when you CAN buy one. Not a good answer for my 40 year old VW, for instance. He's demonstrating the process.

Best replace wife. I have taken my old V8 block & cylinder heads through the dishwasher along with abig number of other bits not to mention rims. Very very worst case, the machine can be replaced.

It works guys, I’ve just used the bar keepers friend, let it sit overnight, and put a cloth inside and shook for around 2 mins, and came out looking pretty much like new!!

@karl bolton, so to recap... you put some barkeepers friend in the reservoir, but can you share what ratio of powder / water you added and how full did you fill it? to the top? And when you say you stuck a cloth inside it afterwards, did you empty any of the mixture first after the 24hrs then put in a cloth to shake it? Good and beautiful work, many thanks for this tremendous effort, but I have a puzzling question: Why did you close the small outlets with tape even though the tank was inside the acid, and you left, for example, the sensitive electrical outlet without a cover? The evidence is that all the outlets are black and did not get rid of the dirt because you sealed them tightly with tape.

I enjoyed watching this and appreciate the work showing us all the steps. In my opinion it would be better to buy a new coolant expansion tank. It being clean and looking like new does not make the plastic new or stronger. This tank is still prone to cracking/leaking due to the heat cycles it has had throughout its lifespan. Buying a new tank will reduce the risk of your car leaving you stranded because it leaked out all its coolant.

On the other hand, buying a replacement for a perfectly serviceable part that will end up in landfill is bad for the environment.
It's also not an option for older cars to just buy another when none are available.

There is ZERO explanation as to how to do this. The description may say “Sonex Ultra Cleaner” but that’s of ZERO help when no such product is available. I found no product by Sonex sold in a quantity used in this video.
Probably straight white distilled Vinegar, I have used vinegar to clean small gummed up fuel tanks. that's my guess.

Remove the coolant tank, pour in some gravel and hot soapy water. Shake it for a couple of minutes, rinse and repeat if necessary-job done.
Now that you've made a clean spot, you now would have to clean the rest of the vehicle with the same process.

I’m simply telling you as a BMW Master technician that plastic cooling system components have a very short life due to extreme heat cycling. If you were so worried that the earth is going down hill why didn’t you mention something about the he chemicals that were being used to restore this plastic to its condition? And the fact that the appearance doesn’t hinder its ability to work properly? Hypocrite!
For replacement parts perhaps not worth it but I restore 50 year old cars and the overflow container has always been a tough one. Even NOS ones (if available) can be discoloured so I’m going to give this a try.
While toxic in high concentration, Sulfamic Acid breaks down to benign compounds in the environment so it’s much less harmful than you would think, unlike the junk being flushed out.

If your goal is form over function by all means soak 50 year old plastic parts in a mixture of acid/water. If quality parts cannot be found I think the next action should be making a quality component out of a different material. Nothing will irritate a customer worse than a split plastic cooling system component.

FWIW you can buy in powdered form at box stores and the instructions for mixture will be on back. Might be brand specific. Home depot has it in 1 lb drums so you can probably read the label and figure out what you would need to make a gallon or 2. Here is a link to the product there but you can also find the same stuff on amazon. . The product is billed as a tile grout cleaner so I can understand why it would be useful to take off the scale deposit inside the bottle. I have a coolant tank of a motorcycle I will probably try it out over the weekend as well. Hope this helps you get the answer you needed. Good idea to soak the expansion bottle cap with rubber seal in acid,it should now last about 10 min after the first start.

good video gonna clean mine out on 2011 mustang GT, hasn't ever been cleaned. looks a bit funky. I just damn did a coolant exchange though a month ago. Shouldn't be a big deal a few hoses connected to reservoir, will siphon out the coolant , unbolt it. and dunk it in this Sulphamic Acid Mixture on my day off. For the Cap, will just spray and brush off with good ole simple green and plain water, should be fine. Actually the tank isnt SUPER dirty, but dirty enough. I do live in the desert though, i would imagine in humid climates they get nastier much quicker
Stick it in a bucket of bleachy water overnight, wait until the wife goes out and straight into the dishwasher
Won't work. I soaked mine in straight bleach for 24 hours - it's clean but it's still yellow. You need a specific chemical reaction with the plastic to get that yellow out.
