Το φρούριο της Φυλής
Στο βίντεο αυτό σας παρουσιάζω το φρούριο της Φυλής που βρίσκεται στη νοτιοδυτική πλευρά της Πάρνηθας. Παραθέτω ιστορικά στοιχεία για αυτό, με όμορφα εναέρια πλάνα!
THE FORTRESS OF FYLI
The ancient fortress of Fyli is located on the northwestern side of mountain Parnitha at an altitude of 850 meters, approximately 10 km northwest of the modern settlement of Fyli. It is one of the many border fortresses which the Athenians had constructed to control
the roads that led to the Attic hinterland. Its construction dates back to the fourth century before Christ and occupies a strategic position, as it is located on the most direct road that connected Athens with Thebes.
The shape of the wall is irregular and embraces the eastern side of the Hill. The west side is so steep so it did not have to be surrounded by a wall.
The dimensions of the fortress are relatively limited, (30 x 100 M) while its wall is 2,5 meters wide on average. It is made of well-worked rectangular blocks from gray limestone of the area. It has four towers, three rectangular and one circular. The circular tower, with a diameter of about 6 meters, is the strongest. It is located in the northeast corner, which is also the most vulnerable, as the ground is much smoother there. On the east side of the wall, near the round tower, is the main gate of the castle. A second gate is on the south side of this.
This building should have been an observatory-garden, as it offered an unobstructed view of the adjacent road. It is probably the fort that, according to Xenophon, was captured by Thrasybulus in 404 Β.C. It was the year that, after the defeat of the Athenians by the Spartans at Thebes, Athens came under the control of the Thirty Tyrants. Thrasybulus, leader of a small group of warriors, rushed to the city with the aim of overthrowing the new regime and removing the Spartan garrison that defended it. So he moved from Thebes to Athens, using the mountain road of Parnitha.
The fortress is about 35 km from the Center of Athens. The paved road that leads us to the fort, after the settlement of the Fyli it has several turns. After the last information sign we leave the asphalt road and we enter a small dirt but passable route which ends in the fort.
For hiking enthusiasts, there is a trail starting from Fili, it passes by the stream of Giannoula, by the "stone of Thodora" (where there is a climbing field), crosses the gorge of Thodora and ends at the base of the hill where the fortress of the Tribe is built. The total length of the route, including the return to Fyli by the shortest road, is 15 km and the ascent difference in altitude is about 300 m.
The fortress of Fyli is for the Athenians, and not only for them, a close escape to nature which can be combined with a walk or even a picnic in the Cold Spring of Fyli located 1 km and 300 m from the fort. There is also the Church of Agia Paraskevi in that place.
