- San Francisco (/saen frnssko/; Spanish for "Saint Francis") is the cultural, political, and economic hub of Northern California, consisting of the city proper and the county it sits in.

At the center of a metropolitan region expected to have the 13th highest population in the United States (4.6 million people) and the 4th highest GDP in the world ($669 billion in 2021) is San Francisco.
The San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area in California is the third largest economic region in the world, with a combined population of 9.5 million and a projected GDP of $1.25 trillion in 2021.
In the same year, San Francisco proper had a GDP of $236.4 billion, with a GDP per person of $289,990.
The Global Financial Centres Index classified San Francisco as the third best U.S. financial center and the eighth best in the world as of March 2022.
As of June 2022[36], four of the world's fifteen largest firms by market capitalization had their headquarters in the Bay Area, despite the fact that the COVID-19 epidemic hastened the departure of businesses from the central business area.
Wells Fargo, Salesforce, Uber, First Republic Bank, Airbnb, Twitter, Block, Levi's, Gap, Dropbox, PG&E, Lyft, and Cruise are just some of the businesses that fit this description.
The city is home to numerous prestigious educational and cultural institutions, such as UC San Francisco, SF State, the de Young Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, the SFJAZZ Center, the California Academy of Sciences, the San Francisco Giants, and the Golden State Warriors.

San Francisco's iconic landmarks include the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, Chinatown, the Mission, the city's steep, rolling hills, and the distinctive mix of architecture throughout the city's various neighborhoods.
On June 29, 1776, Spanish colonists established two settlements in what is now San Francisco: the Presidio at the Golden Gate and the Mission San Francisco de Ass, both of which were named after Francis of Assisi.
More over a quarter of Californians called San Francisco home between the years 1870 and 1900.
Rapid growth after the Gold Rush of 1849 made it the largest metropolis on the West Coast, which had previously been a peaceful fishing community.
San Francisco's city and county governments were merged in 1856.
After an earthquake and fire in 1906[41] demolished three-quarters of the city, it was rebuilt in record time for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
During World War II, it was a significant departure point for navy personnel heading to the Pacific Theater.
In 1945, it was chosen as the first permanent home of the United Nations.
San Francisco became a major hub for liberal action in the United States after World War II for a variety of interrelated reasons.
These included the influx of returning servicemen, significant immigration, liberalizing attitudes, the rise of the "beatnik" and "hippie" countercultures, the sexual revolution, the peace movement growing out of opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War, and the gay rights movement.
