  • San Francisco (/saen frnssko/; Spanish for "Saint Francis") is the city and county that makes up the cultural, political, and economic center of Northern California.
    Approximately 815,201 people call the city proper home as of 2021, making it the fourth most populous in California and the sixteenth most populous in the United States.
    San Francisco, California, is the second-most populated big city in the United States after New York City and the fifth-most populous county in the United States, after only four of the five boroughs of New York City, with an area of 46.9 square miles (121 square kilometers).
    When adjusted for purchasing power, San Francisco ranked sixth in overall income in 2021, but first in per capita income at $160,749[22]. (among the 91 U.S. cities proper with over 250,000 residents).
    SF, San Fran, The City, Frisco, and Baghdad by the Bay are just a few of the slang names for San Francisco.
    San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay Area have become a global center of economic activity and the arts and sciences thanks in large part to the presence of some of the world's finest educational institutions as well as thriving high-tech, healthcare, FIRE, and professional services industries.
    In 2020, the metro area's gross domestic product (GDP) of $874 billion and GDP per capita (GDPPP) of $131,082 ranked fifth and second, respectively, among all OECD countries, surpassing the GDP of such big international cities as Paris, London, and Singapore.
    San Francisco is the hub of the 13th most populous metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the United States (4.6 million people), and the fourth largest by total income and economic output ($669 billion GDP in 2021).
    With a combined population of 9.5 million and a projected GDP of $1.25 trillion in 2021, the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, California metropolitan area is the third largest economic region in the world.
    In the same year, San Francisco proper had a GDP of $236.4 billion, with a GDP per person of $289,990.
    The Global Financial Centres Index placed San Francisco as the third best U.S. financial center and the eighth best in the world as of March 2022.
    Although the COVID-19 pandemic hastened the flight of businesses from the central business district, as of June 2022[36], four of the world's fifteen largest companies by market capitalization had their headquarters in the Bay Area. These companies include Wells Fargo, Salesforce, Uber, First Republic Bank, Airbnb, Twitter, Block, Levi's, Gap, Dropbox, PG&E, Lyft, and Cruise.
    Some of the city's many educational and cultural institutions include the University of California, the State University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, the de Young Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, the SFJAZZ Center, the California Academy of Sciences, the San Francisco Giants, and the Golden State Warriors.
    It is one of the most popular tourist spots in the world.
    The Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, Chinatown, the Mission, and the city's steep, rolling hills and unusual mix of architecture throughout different neighborhoods are all well-known symbols of San Francisco.
    Both the Presidio at the Golden Gate and the Mission San Francisco de Ass, located a few miles apart, were founded by Spanish colonists on June 29, 1776 and were named after Francis of Assisi.
    From 1870 to 1900, San Francisco was home to more than a quarter of Californians. Its rapid expansion following the Gold Rush of 1849 transformed it from a sleepy fishing village into the greatest city on the West Coast.
    In 1856, the city and county of San Francisco were formally combined.
    Three-quarters of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and fire in 1906[41], but in the nine years leading up to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the city was rebuilt at lightning speed.
    It was a major launching place for navy soldiers travelling to the Pacific Theater during World War II.
    In 1945, it was chosen as the first permanent home of the United Nations.
    After World War II, a number of factors combined to establish San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States. These included the influx of returning servicemen, significant immigration, liberalizing attitudes, the rise of the "beatnik" and "hippie" countercultures, the sexual revolution, the peace movement growing out of opposition to United States involvement in the Vietnam War, and the gay rights movement.
    Droughts in recent years have impacted much of California, putting a strain on city water supplies.
