  • In the Hopi language, the Grand Canyon is referred to as ngtupqa.
Yavapai calls it Wi:kai:la, Navajo calls it Bidáá Haazti Tsékooh, and both are derived from the same root.
The Paxa'uipi dialect of the Southern Paiute linguistic family
Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona, United States (Spanish: Gran Caón or Gran Caón del Colorado).
At its deepest point, the Grand Canyon lies nearly a mile below the surface and stretches for more than 277 miles (446 km) in length (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters).
The canyon and its rim are divided between several different jurisdictions, including Grand Canyon National Park, Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation, and the Navajo Nation.
Theodore Roosevelt, as president, was a strong supporter of protecting the Grand Canyon region and a frequent visitor there for hunting and sightseeing.
Because the Colorado River and its tributaries carved their channels through rock layers as the Colorado Plateau was rising, nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been uncovered.
Though geologists disagree on certain details regarding the canyon's incision,[7][8][9] several new studies lend credence to the idea that the Colorado River formed its channel through the area approximately 5-6 million years ago.
Since then, the Colorado River has dug deeper and wider into the canyon by forcing tributaries to withdraw and digging deeper into the ground below them.
Native Americans have lived in this region continuously for thousands of years, with many of them making their homes in the canyon's many caves.
The Grand Canyon was a pilgrimage destination for Pueblo people because of its sacred status.
    [12]
Spanish explorer Garca López de Cárdenas was the first European to arrive to the Grand Canyon in 1540.
