    The first Home Run Derby actually took place in Dec. 1959 between Mickey Mantle vs Willie Mays (aired Jan 9, 1960)

    The first home run derby was in the 1960s. It was a TV Show. Hank Aaron appeared on it 7 times and won 6 of them. You should make a video about that

      many of those old Home Run derby show's are posted on here.So cool to watch Mays,Aaron,Snider,Mantle,Banks,Hodges,Colavito and the rest of the sluggers from the 1950's and early 60"s while in their prime. Gil hodges and Rocky Colavito both deserve to be inducted to the HOF too. They would win like $1000 unless they hit 3 or more homers in a row. Now the prize is a cool million! Wow.

    There was actually a HR derby in the 50s and 60s. It was done for TV only, no fans. The format was the same as a regular game. Any non-HR was an out and you got 3 outs an inning and played 9 innings. It was head to head.

    I was at a hotel in Atlanta a couple of years ago. And Daryl Strawberry was staying at the same hotel. Didn’t get a picture with him but thought it was pretty cool. Pretty neat to see how he has flipped his life around.

    Great piece between this and the Dunk contest you really don’t think about Derby the same way I thought it was always part of the all star week and I guess I thought that because Home Run Derby tv show in the 50s 60s that was aired In the off season and it was on ESPN classic for a couple of years.

    He broke the color barrier in pro baseball
    And, his number has been retired by Major League Baseball.
    His accomplishment transcends sports.
    And, for the record. Is also in the pro baseball hall of fame !!!!
