Wonderful pianism, treating the music with the lyrical sensitivity that it needs. Great phrasing and pedalling. Also the best Allegro Barbaro (No.5) I've heard.
Etude 10 in G-flat major Chant d'amour - Chant de mort 43:17 - 54:04 10min. 47sec. Etude 7 in E-flat major L'incendie au village voisin 21:16 - 31:59 10min. 43sec.
Bravo
Small correction to the description: "while the famous F major study, a savage and exhilarating study in parallel octaves (mostly on the white keys) is called “Allegro barbaro”." It's ENTIRELY on the white keys.
The last étude, in E major, makes me wonder if Alkan took Burgmuller's Op. 105 No. 9 (also an octave study in E major), & decided to kick it up a few notches. So many similarities, including the choice of final chords (adding a vi among the inversions of I). (Many piano students here in Canada will be familiar with the Burgmuller as one of the choices for technical exercises that must be played as part of their Level 10 pianoforte exam in the Royal Conservatory of Music examination system.)
Alkan published this opus in 1847 whereas Burgmüller's opus 105 was published in 1854. So...no, he didn't. Alkan's étude was composed before Burgmüller's one.
it's a pitty that extreme virtuosos fail at lyricism while playing Alkan, like at this annoying 8th etude, where not one single bar is played straight in rhythm! same for the beginning of the "incendie" and the whole 11th. even in pieces with virtuosistic climax I find the kind of approach here quite unsatisfying. it seems there's an urge at playing as fastest and loudest as possible, instead of building the climax more slowly, with more accumulated tension. I dream that one day true great pianists will put Alkan's works in their repertoire.
This is by far the best Chant d’amour - Chant de mort I’ve ever heard
Magical music in the hands of a great musician.
💮 Thank you! 💮
The opening of the first etude reminds me a little of Chopin's military polonaise.

Dude , i see you in every single one of the RUclips videos of recordings for Alkan's work .
@@smitebalanceteam8116 Same. Him and a few more I always see.

Etude 10 in G-flat major
Chant d'amour - Chant de mort
43:17 - 54:04 10min. 47sec.
Etude 7 in E-flat major
L'incendie au village voisin
21:16 - 31:59 10min. 43sec.
More like tone poems than Etudes, but that wasn’t uncommon for Alkan.
Very beautiful.

I heard Liszt's Grande Etude No.10 at 14:57 ! 😂😂
And after that, I hear the middle section of Baba Yaga from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition!

@@elinathanferlay1013 Good to know! Thank you!
The only person Liszt was nervous to play the piano in front of was the great Alkan.
True story or your own guess ? 😄
@@paeffill9428 That is not true
true or not it is indeed mentionned in liszt's or alkan's bio (Fayard)
Paganini Variation No. 4 1838 my friend, no one can compare himself to Liszt!
@@AyAdam1337 That's very true though and who cares about their techniques? At least God gifted us these 2 geniuses, be happy with that

Absolutely Chopin lol
Totally Chopin op. 25 no.9

I mean gibbons, maltempo, hamelin, yui moritsa, seon yong hwang
