Older golfer here (69) ... I play my age every time I go out ... I usually get there by the 15th hole. Because of arthritis in the hands, I've been using the baseball grip. It's OK, but I'm sure I can do better (17 HCP). This lesson really helped me to visualize the overlap grip. I'm going to the indoor driving range this week. I'm going to work on this and see what happens. I'm pretty sure I can have a more stable grip. THANK YOU!!!
This was exactly the grip error that I'd evolved into, I couldn't understand why my game had gone downhill until I saw this video.
Excellent explanation and ideas of feel on the grip.
I've just come back from the driving range and can tell you I feel a whole lot better. I can now control the path left and right, although a bit more practice is required so it doesn't go too far left and right 😂
Thank you 😊
FANTASTIC! Thanks a bunch, it took me so many years to work this out for myself and I haven't seen this explained so well in such a short time. Confirmation for many years of tears, trials and tribulations MAGIC!
When i figured out the thumb and index finger pressure with right hand, especially at impact, my whole golf game changed. I went from hitting and hoping to actually hitting "shots".
Great tip. Thank you for the detailed and easy to understand instruction in all your videos. This will give me something to work on over the winter. Cheers!
This is the best explanation of the grip that I have heard. This speaks to my misses. Great lesion. Thank you.
I use an interlock grip, but the same principles apply. My pressure is in my pinkie and ring fingers of the glove hand(left) and my middle and pointer of my right hand. I do create an "angled gap" with my finger to connect with my thumb. Glad I saw this video! I might play around with my pressure points now just to see what different results I can get! Great video! Thanks for sharing it!
This stuff is brilliant!!! No other teacher covers these minor grip details!!!!!
Perfect timing! I Needed a brush up on grip pressure and finger placement, I've been having a wonky feeling in my grip. I do use the overlap.
I went to the range after wathcing this vidoe, and wow!!!! Made teh adjustments, immediate diffrence in my ball striking. Thank you so much; keep up the great work.
Can’t begin to tell you how thankful I am to have discovered this channel. I’ve taken many lessons from various pros and none of them ever explained in detail the grip like you just did in this lesson. I can hardly wait to get to the driving range and try this out. Thank you
I played 9 holes today. At setup, I focused on making sure my lead hand only had pressure in last three fingers and trail hand grip pressure was mostly in my index and thumb. And I had spaces like you suggested. Kept going back to pressure in all fingers and made some inconsistent iron shots. But when I made good contact I attributed it to a good setup.
What a great Coach --- Easy to follow, not too many things to remember.
love the content thanks so much for all the tips
Love the video. No question with the tiny tweak with the Vardon grip. I agree with the glove hand technique. Brilliant! My only question regarding the Top Hand is the pressure you place with the Index finger and thumb. I was always under the impression that the Middle and Index fingers were the other two that were where "pressure" was placed. Second, do you have any comment on the new SuperSpeed Grip tool? A video would be great! Thanks and Happy New Year!
Great tip! I ended up switching to the interlocking because for me it felt like the club grip stayed locked in my hands without needing much grip pressure. I used to think it felt impossible to use haha.
Great advice. can't wait for April in Chicago 😉
This video worked wonders for me! Thank you so much. I was so frustrated with my inconsistency as of late and couldnt figure out that it was all stemming from my grip until watching this
Thank you!! This is gold..
Just the quick tip I needed today. Thanks!
Brilliant as always thank you
Good to have reassurance of my grip! Been doing this for about 40 years!
I needed this , great vid Mr. SG.
I was not creating the gap, as soon as I saw the wrong grip, I immediately recognized it as my grip.
Thanks for the tip, I've always had the left finger jammed against the other fingers and in most cases I push the ball to the right. I'm defeatedly going to give your lesson a try next week.
Thank you,Matt.
This is the best video I have ever seen on the grip. Thank you very much.
Agreed
Actually a really good video. I use the 10 finger group because it feels more comfortable for me but I wonder if it’s because I’m not gapping my fingers like you showed. We’ll see!
You’re my new man crush…I’m an overlap gripper and didn’t have the gap with my left hand, and didn’t have the “pinch” with my right hand…I’ve been hitting it so poorly for a while now…just implemented your rec and BOOM! Now when I hit it crooked, it’s a solid crooked hit!
Definitely saving this video
Three years of golfing squeezing my left hand fingers together with an overlap grip. Thanks for the tip dude such a silly little thing made a huge difference. Cheers from Sweden
Tnx man!
Love the video pal, and even better it’s powered by TrackMan.
Keep up the great content.
This tip couldn't have come at a better time.. I was, for the longest time an interlocker, then 2 months ago now, I got my left pinky injured and I can't really use it to grip the club anymore to the point that I actually tape it so it stays straight so I don't injure it more.. to get more left fingers on the club, I switched to the overlap, and experimented with what you just explained.. and yes it is more effective to have a slot for the right pinky! This validates my experiment lol
Pure genius! Thanks b
I've been stuck around 8 for the last couple of years. I've explored different types of swing and strong, neutral and weak grips. I've not considered this before, where the pressure comes from in the grip. A whole new can of worms to explore. Thank you.
Heading to Stonebridge this morning--I'll give it a shot...or 6...
Great tip. I’m one of those guys, now I know better, thank you very much.
I am a interlocker, even though my coach wants me to change to overlapping. But I have been pretty much doing what Matt is describing here while working with my swing coach. Great video Matt.
Why does he want you to switch to an entirely different grip!? Never heard of such a thing...awfully suspect IMHO
Your channel is so boss. I’m so glad I found you
great video
Damn - you explained something I have been experiencing. Now to wait about 90 days to try it out.
Could you do one for a ren finger grip?
I would like to see a video about how to get your launch angle down off the tee box with driver.
So the arms are passive in the downswing how do you get from P4 to this point?
Can't wait to try this advice. 10 finger guy here.
These titles are something else. 😂
Where is the thumb on your right hand? Left of center or center and on top of the shaft??
Tried this and my shots are much more consistent and straight.
WOW ! This is a GAME CHANGER ! 2 bad it’s being raining here N THE BAY AREA THIS WEEK ! I can’t wait 2 take these changes 2 the range ! Thanks man !
so basically the grip is costing me 30-40 yards based on his numbers? that's crazy! Was that really the same swing speed @mrshortGame?
I tried this my last two rounds. I believe it has helped me take out some of my side spin. I have also noticed when my path is good I get sound from my strike I am unfamiliar with. This is one of the best swing thoughts I have ever heard. I have better focus on each shot, focusing on the process and not the outcome. Thank you so much!
Good one thanks
Same way i was taught; trigger finger to shape the shot.
Now this is the most valuable info I’ve heard in awhile. I’ve always assumed the right pinky goes right on top of the left index, and not in the gap. No wonder I’m so inconsistent.
Going to give it a try! Always feels a little uncomfortable, makes sense
5:08 and on I was sure if he was talking about golf anymore
I thought everyone said you hang on with the two middle fingers of the left hand and keep thumb and pointing finger light or loose?….
I don't understand how anyone can prefer overlap to interlock.
Try the interlock with arthritis in both hands/fingers. It's a killer even with mid- to over-size grips. I played interlock in the past and went to baseball last year. My hands thanked me.
Open your mind. Different strokes for different folks. I've used both. I have better control with the overlap. They're both equally as comfortable to me, so I use the one that lowers my score.
Short thumb fixes this
Simply interlock and call it a day.
One thing, just this one thing. Whatever you do, don't do it. And for the next video, Matt will share with you the one thing that only the pros know...just the pros..and Matt, of course. But if you do the thing in the next video, the one thing that's a secret, you'll be on tour with the rest of the pros who know this one thing. But it's a secret, a secret thing. Don't tell anyone else. Good luck
Don't have this problem.
I mean right hand. Sorry
This is not good nor universal advice.
