Finally! A logical explanation of why I have been pulling my wedges. Will bring this instruction (I hate the word “tip”) to the course. Also, important: realizing the distance from the ball changes with the club selection.
I have finally been able to get my irons and driver to compress and go straight with a bit of a draw...but the wedges have been going EXACTLY how you are saying. I needed this! Thanks!
Wonderful, Matt. I’ve been missing so many greens left with my wedges the last 2 months and doing bandaid fixes to hold the face off. This really helped me!!
Matt, that was probably your best instructional video you have done so far, lots to take away from this! Also, dig that Aero-Whip in the background! See you in Orlando.
A fantastic example of demonstrating such an important concept simply and clearly. I don't know why I have not seen anyone else address this issue. It's not like wedge play isn't integral to scoring! Thanks Matt love the passion and conviction in you videos keep up the great work!
Outstanding! The difference between the results of being left and right as demonstrated here are tremendous in relation to your score and your mental state. I have been viewing MSG videos for a few years now and his tips are spot-on. Also, and this is key -- he is consistent in his instructions. Last year I put them together and dropped from a 16.1 in April to at 12.9 by November. Next stop: single digits.
This was SUPER helpful Matt, thank you! I have recently been struggling with long left pulls inside 120 yards and now I know why! I was trying to fix my stance, swing path etc. All I had to do was open up the face and now I'm back to throwing darts. Thank you!!!!
@@cornpop9045 Nothing is today's golf instruction is novel. It's all been stated somewhere which is normal considering how many instructors there are and how long golf has been around...
This is a great tip. I figured this out about 4 months ago. Forever I have been missing right on my approach shots. (I’m a lefty ) I started setting up with a slightly open face and the results were immediate . Hitting more greens. More birdie chances. Lower handicap. Great tip!
Watched this video last night, took it to the practice range today, and by golly.....it works! No more pulled wedges!!! Thank you so much for this video!!!
Didn’t know how bad I need to watch this video. I’m on the third time watching it to lock in the lesson. You’ve literally changed my errant thought process, specifically to understanding club face position in relation to my common miss. Wow, what a great video. Sub +1 can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos.
Really helpful tip, which you would think I should know being a scratch golfer! Now I know why I pull a ton of my wedges. Thank you this will help a ton!
I knew about opening club face more in a bunker and it will still go straight but I never thought about it at 100yrds in. Makes sense now and I'm playing 9 holes after work today. I'm going to work on this. Thanks man!
@@jameswilliams7578 My wedge game was actually better I had a little more height on the ball with a softer landing. No eagles but I did have a couple birdie opportunities. Thanks!
1 of the few videos out there to have really helped me. Always had a pull with my wedges and I would try to change my swing to address it, saw just the thumbnail of this video before heading off to my round today. After about 3 consecutive pulls with my wedges (other clubs were missing push side) I tried your advice and it worked! Came back after the round to watch this. Now on to your video about hybrids, I tend to over draw those....
Bro, how come you didn't give this lesson years ago when you lived in CA? Man that is such a solid visual lesson. I loved your lessons then. I remember your lesson about ending on your right toe. Thank you!
Thanks for this outstanding video! I am a 0 handicap but struggled with pulled wedges. Since watching this, my wedges have become magic. And my overall iron game is much improved. Much appreciated!!!
A year late with this comment but just been to the range to try this and it REALLY works ! I’ve missed greens to the left for years and is why my HC isn’t 6 or 7 lower. Basically instead of setting up with left arm and club in straight line, i.e. with forward shaft lean, set up with handle in the centre and open the face about 10 deg or so. When you come back to impact position, the face has squared and it flies straight….brilliant and thank you from the UK.
Awesome video. I have struggled with pulling short irons for a while. I tried this tip on my sim and I hit all of them dead straight! Thank you so much for posting this video!
I was able to try this technique this past weekend on the course and it was such a huge difference from my usual results. More practice and I'll be getting within that 10' circle in no time. THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIPS! KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT CONTENT
Helpful insight to how the wedges are so important ! Especially if they’re too upright to begin with. More of a reason why you’re wedges should be flatter than your irons.
Makes sense. I've always noticed with good wedge and shorter iron players that their hand stay under their shoulders and closer to their bodies than other players. Creating less left/right directional misses.
This video will help me get the ball on the green in regulation. I seem to be left of the green more often than not and I know this tip will help reduce that. I always set up with the club in the middle as you have spoken about numerous times and open the face for chipping but have the face square with my long wedge shots. This has to be the answer. Heading down to my hitting net in the basement now to see if it is the answer!
This is super helpful. I have been "Nuking" my wedges long and left over the last few months and it has been confusing me. This is something to work on over the next few weeks to tidy this up. Appreciate this detail.
Great tip! I saw this first hand yesterday on the course. I tried to explain it on course, but you visuals were an awesome share. Thanks again, you Rock!

great lesson i was figuring this out a few hours ago. my p wedge was going left so i was changing my stance and that opens the face.. now ill just open the face!!!

Great Video and outstanding tip....Will fire up my simulator and work on this for sure as my wedge play is what causes me the most trouble and scoring for sure.
Great lesson. I couldn't figure out why I was pulling everything from my 9i thru wedges. Opened my club face just a little at the range and everything was pretty much on the money. Thought it was a swing flaw...thanks for making sense of it!
Pretty advanced concept and you explained it very well. At what stage do you think it’s good to introduce this to a golfer who’s playing 95-105 range? She just started compressing the ball better with forward shaft lean so I’m thinking she’s ready for this but don’t want to confuse her with too much info!
Matt, great video ! Interesting, I have seen some other channels which state for fuller wedge shots a slightly closed club face can promote cleaner ball contact on the face, SO LONG AS you strike with shaft lean and also open the hips to engage a square face at contact
Amazing explanation and vid I only ever used this technique with chipping and short pitch shots around the green. Explains why I pull a lot of 100-110 yard shots. I would love to see the same vid but with low-mid irons to truely appreciate the importance of setup
Thanks for explaining how to cure this problem. I always find myself setting up comfortably with my PW, but "comfortable" for me has been with the handle way forward the face closed. And guess what, Long and Left. Thanks for helping me understand the solution.
Omg !! This is what I needed !!! Thank you so much!!!❤️love your videos been following for ages now you help and make it so easy! Thank you from 🇬🇧 👌👌👍🏻👍🏻
This concept is shown really well by Dustin Johnson’s bunker play as well. He pretty much addresses the ball with the hosel but at impact the club is in a normal impact position.

WOW WOW WOW I tried this and not only did I hit more greens I added a ton of spin to the shots. I was a little scared on my first try and bladed it, but after that I committed to it and it worked really well.
Great tip, one question though, how do you shut or open the face, by manipulating with your hands or by changing the face angle with your grip? Thanks in advance for clarifying this aspect!
I've known this for a long time, but my head won't let me accept it. This is the best I've ever seen it explained. Good job.

Wow, this was the first video that makes sense about wedge setup. Now I get it, thanks for all the great tips and advice.
I’ve never been a pro golfer but in the thumbnail. I try to make sure the club is facing the ball on that angle when striking! Golf is a funny game.
With wedges, pros typically dont. They use the bounce a little more, because their wedges have a low grind.

Yeah agree with this comment. Some other channels say to have a slightly closed face to ensure better face contact and to promote ball then turf
