Short summary: 1. Move the ball slightly up in stance 2. Stand taller or shaft more upright and 3. Keep rotating for flow but do not turn the hands over, with an open palm thru impact
Your short game videos are what brought me to the channel years ago. They’ve helped me significantly. I was terrible around the greens. This is your sweet spot amigo!
Dave Pelz always pointed out that the swing has one bottom point. Play the ball back behind that point and you’ll hit it thin. Play it forward and you’ll lay sod. You have to make some compensatory move to save the shot. Works great in the sand though! Just open the club face a bit, play the ball a few inches forward and it all takes care of itself.
Your demonstration of how much it aims left when your hands are too low with a high loft club is incredible. THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TRICK I RETAIN FROM THIS VIDEO. Thank you very much
It always amazing how you teach something different from the traditional and how right you are. Your short game teachings have changed my and I'm sure many others game. Just still need to break the old habits and teachings.
Your tips have helped my golf game so much! I definitely do the hunch over thing on my shorter iron shots, you explain it so good snd make it understandable..thanks Matt!
I think one big reason why some people play the ball back far on those shots is that they are still learning about "bounce" and how to use it. They think that by moving it back it will help them avoid the dreaded "chunk," but in reality, now the leading edge will dig like a shovel. Great video as always, man! That practice room is epic.
Great short game video. My weakness is this exact shot, and the things you covered here should help me start to stick it. Thanks, Matt! Keep them coming.
Wish I had your energy. I love golf an just started learning about 2 years ago. Your videos have helped me a lot. Been sick since Nov,an haven't had much strength to practice, your videos have helped keep my mind focused. Thank you. Wishing day would come I wake up,an feel good enough to go play 😊
Matt, I’m not sure if this is you best advice video ever, but it has to be up there. I’m definitely going to work on these tips in practice as my GIR is not nearly as good as it should be for my driving accuracy stats.
Why has it taken me years to find out what's been causing those long left misses? Thank you for clearing that up for me. Seeing this video, I realize that's exactly what I've been doing.
Being a shorter golfer lower hands fits my swing, I fixed that issue by having my wedges with a flatter lie. That worked for me better than changing my set up. Just my take.
This one really helps me as I pull my wedges left of target and couldn’t understand why. Always good strike finishing pin high but 5-10 yards left!! This video is really helpful, thank you
Great timing- my wedge play has gotten bad since working on driver over winter. I do all three of those and the left miss is killing me. Will be taking your advice to the course tomorrow.
Another great video lesson Matt! I still think your channel is top five on youtube for actually lower scores. Can you talk about choking down and up on your wedges to change the distance?
That was brilliant! Never seen that before. That loft change when lowering the hands v driver, Wow. Not trying to do the same swing, all makes perfect sense now. Great video. New subscriber here 👏👍
It's like this entire video was tailored just for my misses. I have the ability to hit a 130 pitching wedge by essentially pulling the ball. But if I move it up, I can hit a high controlled 120. I can use a 9 iron for the 130...I'm literally my worst coach. Thanks, Matt.
Another side effect of the back of center ball position is inconsistent distance. Behind center is not a point, it's a continuum. Every time you hit from behind center it will be a slightly different amount, giving a slightly different loft and a slightly different distance. Center is always in the same place.
I like the concept that the trail hand palm matches the club face. I am going to do some work with that. Also, I miss the older MSG intro with the music - any chance of bringing that back? Ba da bum bum bum …..
You have answered two questions for me, thanks. One is why I occasionally shank pitches (problem #1). The other is not a problem I see with 80 yard shots, but rather with full irons, usually 7-9 iron. I will occasionally hit one way left, and long (problem #2).
Its actually an XX yardage for each player based on their ability and set make up. 80 yards for me is an "A" wedge all day. My problem is 60-70 yards. Which I either choke down on the "A" or jump on the "S" wedge OR change the amount of backswing. Changing the backswing seems to adjust flight (ball height). These are all things someone should be doing at the range as they look at the 50 and 100 yard markers. Yeah it might not be about hero shots for going down range, but practicing these at the range helps you on the course. Its like practice for bowling, you have to shoot spare shots in practice and not just look at throwing strikes.
Mr. Short Game? I haven't played a round in over 15 years. In my Mini-Tour days, sir, I could hit every yardage from 115 yards in. It's all about how many finger widths you choke down on the handle. You note the upright stance and different ball position, which is great, yet there are so many holes. Each finger width is 5 yards. I would alternate between one, two, three & four finger widths, so I would have 2 to 3 club options per shot. Getting pin high is the key, and aim is simply where you throw your hands. Yes.... where you throw your hands.
This guy should watch video of Lee Trevino hitting his "burning wedge" shot. He played it way back in his stance, let it come in low, and he was unbelievably accurate with it. Nicklaus said Trevino was the best wedge player he ever played against.
for pros with consistent low points that is great. Amateurs have wildly inconsistent low points which means we should safe guard advice for amateurs as much as possible. Consistency is lower scores.
Spin rate on ball position is a touch misleading. Spin rate is determined shot to shot by combo of angle of attack and dynamic loft. That back foot shot example is hit with still low angle of attack so it makes sense it doesn’t spin more. Back foot and deep divot will spin significantly more than forward and shallow divot
You're manipulating the face different with these clubs with a gap like that. Unless they are from different sets and the face angle is larger than a ~4 degree difference.
@@AsadKhan-lm6yr so the kirkland is either a 52, 56, or 60. My Pw is 46 and Gw is 50. You may have gap. I have kirland wedges and dont use the 52. Calloway Edge Pw appears to be 44.
People forget that spin isn’t created by hitting down on the ball. Spin is created by hitting downward with a higher dynamic loft. Playing it back brings your D. Loft down significantly
You’ve never played early season in the PNW 😂 Trying to use the bounce is a guaranteed mud sucks in the club and the ball goes five yards! Ball back, leading edge first spinner is the play. Granted, usually not the right play in reasonable conditions.
I think u don’t quite understand the concept of margin for error. A small margin for error would be better bc then there is a smaller chance of error. A big margin of error means there’s more chance of error

Great advice Mr SG! I never play the short pitch of the back foot. Just forward of middle sets me up good.

This is fantastic. I’m 6’6” and I tend to pull the ball because I bend too much and I think this just might fix it. Thanks.
All really great instruction. Well done.

These vids are so easy to watch and understand, so helpful.
Love the proof show of the wedge low stance comparison. Makes complete sense and yes, shorter clubs do make most want to bend over farther.

Pitches under thirty yards I use the toe down method and I just putt it. Amazingly it goes straight.

Bending over the shot with the wedge could be why it is so easy to shank them? Good video! Thanks
Yep I pull those 70 or 80 yarders pretty bad, I'll concentrate on my right hand for those in future. Looking forward to practicing it a bit soon
where di you get your shoes? I love them NIke's

I just back off the tee line a few yards and choke up on the grip a little if I am trying to hit a little under normal distance.
That made alot of sense

When you talked about club angle going left and long when bending over on wedge shots I felt personally attacked lol 😂
Great pointers! Not sure if you have played in Pittsburgh yet, but Lindenwood is legit. There are many other good courses as well.
You might have just solved my 7 iron issue to go left with your second tip about bending over too far. Soon as the weather breaks I'll find out.
Great advice, into a strong wind without the proper technique the ball just balloon's up and comes up short.

I'm hitting a long pitch shot from 80 yards unless it is uphill, then it is a half swing with a normal stance
Surprised one of the 3 wasn’t deceleration on shorter shots.
What type of shoes are those?! They are siiiick
Well, that explains why I'm left and long with P, 9 & 8. I'll move in!

The 80-100 yard shot derails almost every round I play . My miss is short right ..... not anymore . Thanks for the fix
"we gotta get high"...this is actually solid advice!
Stay high so you ain’t gotta get high
Well…this is somewhat counter to what is actually taught/desired out of ball flight…but that’s what Titleist Performance Institute taught me…
I don't believe you said what wedge you're using or maybe I missed it. Sandwedge? Lob wedge?
People actually move the ball back in their stance from this distance? I’ve never heard of doing this or even considered this 😂
Where was this before yesterdays round? 😂
Why practice 80 y =72.9 m shot that might need to hit only once every 3 to 5 rounds. For most golfers this distance is a half PW(assume pw is 48 deg)
