In the original comic, The Mask was much more violent and nihilistic, it was Jim Carrey and the director Chuck Russell who brought in the homages to classic Looney Tunes... so you are right, it was literally made for Jim Carrey

Fun fact: Jim Carrey wanted the character of Stanley Ipkiss to be just as interesting as the Mask, so the audience wouldn't get bored, so he based the character's entire personality on his father, a lovable goof who loved cartoons and was always struggling to make ends meet.

Well the sequel was originally planned for 1996. And brought back most of the main cast. I’m pretty sure Jim Carrey had a bunch of movies it was already working on and declined the role. So there’s no room in the schedule for the sequel with all the effects to make it. It would be put on ice until 2000 something. Hell, there was an advertisement for The Mask 2 With Jim Carry on a 95’ issue of Nintendo power. Hell, Movie Posters where made before before the contracts were signed for pre-production. Hollywood does this to this to build up excitement for studio investors.

The director Chuck Russell had the script written with Jim Carrey specifically in mind (adapted from the Dark Horse comics). When Jim read the script he said "it's like this movie was written for me!"
To which the director said "It was, so if you say no, we're in big trouble"
The comics are hilarious and wildly violent. Essentially Deadpool before Deadpool

  • @wilder11

Notice how the first two times Stanley puts on the mask, it takes him over. But when he puts it on in the park, he clearly has more control over it, because he can take it right off. He doesn't wake up the next day, thinking it could be a dream.
If we voluntarily take on our darker side, we can get control over it. Remember Ben Stein's advice? "Go as both yourself AND the Mask." That's what we all have to do.
I sure do miss when stories like this, with actual moral lessons, were more the norm, and they had some actual thought and love put into them.

There are multiple pieces and not one rubber prosthetic. There are cheek pieces, jaw pieces, chin and brow pieces as well as the skull cap to cover his hair. Peggy seems to be such a nice, genuine person. But deep down she's ultimately selfish and self-serving. Meanwhile, Tina SEEMS to be the classic manipulative film noir "femme fatale," only to reveal that she's really a very sweet, compassionate woman beneath the surface.

19:19 It's a classic movie trick that goes all the way back to the days of Technicolor.
Technicolor's biggest problem was that it needs a lot of light to render anything-- the characteristic look of a Technicolor film comes from the intense studio lighting flattening out the contrast. Another problem is you can't shoot things in actual nighttime conditions, so a night scene gets shot with a lot of light and is then underexposed and recolored to look like a scene under a dark sky.

At around 8:00 you ask if the mask is supposed to be his Id, it's not.
According to Jung the description goes kinda like this:
    - SuperEgo is all you wishes desires and impulses
    - Id is your moral conscience and logical refraining
    - Ego is who you are, what is left of your super ego after filtering it through your id.
The Mask here has basically the same psychological effect of alcohol, which lowers function of the frontal lobe and reduces judgement.
That's one of the reasons highly repressed people turn into someone else when they drink.
Of course the mask has the added loney toons powers to it xD

"Is this Jim Carrey's id?" You hit it exactly. The original comic book (published by Dark Horse) is much darker than the film. Stanley goes completely to the dark side, and Stanley's girlfriend and Kelloway have to stop him.
The balloon animals scene is supposed to be a follow-up for a scene where that gang had mugged Stanley, but the set-up got cut.
"Landfill ParK" may be a reference to Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach, VA, which is an old garbage heap coved over with dirt and sod and used as a public park. Yes, it's an actual thing.
Loki appears the horrible sequel. Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz do not. It's a pity, because one of the things I was really hoping for in the sequel was Cameron Diaz putting on the mask and us getting a look at "unfettered id Tina."

This movie alone created a whole narrative about how "looney tunes" powers could be immeasurable powerful. While you stay in the character, you are unstoppable. A guy like "The Mask" could beat Tanos in a heartbeat. But the motivation for doing so, maybe is what holds him.

Where I live, we actually have a "Landfill Park" but it's not called that. t's called Mt. Trashmore. It's basically a manmade mountain made with trash and sod repeatedly piled on top of each other. It has a skate park, a bike path, people ride their sleds there, and they hold fireworks displays there every 4th of July. It's pretty cool.

7:36 so believe it or not the directors and writers of the movie didn’t want the Big Teeth because they were impossible to fit inside the Actor’s mouth… however Jim Carry wanted the teeth so what he did was when he was “The Mask” he smiled the entire time making sure they would stay on 😁

My favorite Carrey movie. This is based off a pretty graphic comic book, but you don't see that here. This is just the mask unleashing a man with every cinematic facial gesture and impression known to man. In other words, just Jim Carrey unleashed.

So... it wasn't until we bought it on VHS that I finally got to see the beginning and it made more sense!

Cameron Diaz's entrance cemented her as a star for the next decade. Interestingly her best acting is in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday where she stands toe to toe with Al Pacino.
This may be the best dog actor since Jeb from The Thing.
The funniest line from Doyle, "SWAT got offered to open Vegas" after the dance number. That and "I thought you'd have a sense of humour... after all... YOU MARRIED HER !"

They had to apply multiple prosthetic pieces to Jim Carrey’s face to make sure his facial expression’s weren’t restricted it was a 4 hour process.
Also the producers wanted to scrap the Cuban Pete scene because they thought it made no sense to put a musical number in a comedy movie 🤷

Yeah you're actually not entirely wrong. The original draft of the movie was a horror comedy with the Mask as a supernatural serial killer. The idea was for it to replace the Nightmare on Elm Street series. When the idea to cast Carrey came up, they completely reworked the film to fit with his style of comedy, molding it around him.

Originally, Peggy was gonna be killed by being put into the press and she appears on the headline with a horrified picture of her, saying "Reportered Murdered" but that bit cut from the movie. Because of this she appears in the animated series, though because she betrayed Stanley in the movie, they're just friends.
On a side note, unlike the movie, Stanley Ipkiss can put on The Mask anytime of the day, not just at night and Inspector Kellaway is taller and bulkier than in the movie, even taller than Doyle.
