Walt Whitman is America’s world poet - a latter-day successor to Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. His self-published verse collection ‘Leaves of Grass’ is a landmark in the history of American Literature.
-
In ‘Oh Me! Oh Life!’, Whitman questions his own existence and the futility of life. He ponders the "endless trains of the faithless," and describes cities full of foolish people, criticising himself for being no better. He laments that things never turn out the way he wants them to, and observes the "sordid crowds" around him who are also fighting through the journey of life. He believes that he is intertwined with these people, spending just as many "useless years" in pursuit of a distant idea.
At the end of the poem, he answers his own question-existence is enough of a purpose for humans to exist, and having life is reason enough for living.
"Keep your face always toward
the sunshine - and shadows
will fall behind you."
- Walt Whitman.
Love it🤗
That's actually a Māori proverb.
And yet, at dusk the shadows overtake the sun.

The narrator’s voice thunders with authority. He brings the words to life
That is Shane Morris. Try Desiderata. You will love it.
The music also was very complimenting as well.
Yeah... My eyes were sleepy, just woke up.. Refreshing

Exactly!
Part of a powerful scene in Dead Poet's Society as well. 'The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.' Thank you for this.
This may as well have been written last week. Nothing changes, even when everything changes.
Yes it does.
@@glendalangley1877 People still die, even if the ways that we do have changed over the years. In context, yes nothing changes.

Such a definitive take on our own flawed approach to living life. Bhagvad Gita enjoins :"Elevate yourself through the power of your mind and not degrade yourself for the mind can be the friend and also the enemy of the self. " (Chapter 6 Verse 5)

Words of wisdom for sure.
Of course one should know which of the 3 minds must be ruled.
The conscious, the sub- conscious, and the primitive / reptilian mind. The conscious must watch over and rule the subconscious and the reptilian minds.
“The Powerful Play”… this touched the deepest part of me.

almost healed my depression
Walt Whitman has always been a favorite poet of mine. I don’t remember if I’ve ever read this before but it definitely comes to me at the right time. I do hope everyone that listens to this video can take something positive away from it even thou the times we are living in is so uncertain. I only wish there was a way to spread this video to the world. It does contain a profound message.

Are there any other good poets recently? It's like every great poem is from the past

I can’t think of anyone right this minute but if I do I’ll come back and let you know.
I don’t think you’re going to get better than the poets and writers of the past. There’s much wisdom in those of the past. I’m having a lot of problems with those in the present. Not seeing to much wisdom in anyone of the present. Who knows maybe someone will surprise me. 🦋🦋🦋
@@gradientO Exactly .I was reading Churchill quotes last night and thought they just don't make em like they used to. Nothing profound comes from the lips of most men and women these days. Thank goodness we still have Thomas Sowell. As far as great poets go they are all at rest.
RUclips is a great start for sharing this with the world 🌎🌍 😊
Beautiful poetry by the great Walt Whitman 🌹🙏🌹
No person is your friend who demand you silence or denies your right to grow!
You’re so right. Sadly I’m finding that out.
@@glendalangley1877 I know it hurts, believe me, though it's better to find out and to move on without them. I'm sorry people treated you this way. Stay strong.
Just today I was questioning myself, stumbled upon this and it answered my questions.
Life is hard but we keep pushing
The question of Mr. Keating from Dead Poets Society after quoting this beautiful poem, "What your verse will be?" has always got me thinking... Walt Whitman, one of a kind.
Thank You! 🙏😊

Great reading! This poem is a favorite.
Me too😇
Love this spoken word video. One of my Fav.
Several decades ago, came across this poet in Dead Poets Society at the movie theatre. There was no such thing as the Internet, Google or RUclips to explore random curiosities. Thanks for the memories. RIP Robin Williams ❤️🩹
Very genuine.
✨In the first stanza, the speaker talks about negative elements of life in metaphor. In the second stanza, the speaker presents good elements of life for a strong contrast. With far more negative elements discussed than positive elements, the reader is noted that, although good things in life are so rare compared to bad things, embracing them could read to a "life" worth experiencing.
You helped me with my college comp class with this, thanks!
Exactly!
Walt Whitman was always that friend that got real with me. For a period I've been in a very sardonic phase but I listen or read some Whitman and I am rejuvenated. It's 218am and I can't wait to seize the day.

Agreed.
OH MEEE!
Good stuff 👏 👍
Thats soo great
Even though Sir Whitman wrote this poet watching the contemporary of America . This poet actually is still able to hold on to it's meaning and metaphors which can be seen in the present society if noticed carefully . Embracing good aspects of life through negative aspects of life is what makes life bewitching.
The narrator's voice sounds like an angel to my head
That gives me goosebumps

What use is it to interpret someone who is useless!
A thoughtful soul tends to loneliness.
