These peas are really really good... they are filled with so much flavor which is the one issue many people have with black eyed peas.... a lot of times they simply lack flavor but these don't.... I created my own personal creole seasoning for this recipe. The seasoning infuses these black eyed peas with all the flavor it needs... and the combination of seasonings is what makes these bad boys finger licking good. Black eyes peas are sort of a New Year's tradition in my family. My grandmother use to make them along with pig's feet, cornbread, and potato salad every New year's eve dinner. Each year we'd throw a get together for family and friends and make a big ole dinner to bring the New Year's in, just like most American's do and not a year went by that we didnt make some black eyed peas. But I kind of customize the recipe and took it to another level... my grandmom would be so proud of how much better these taste. Give them a shot... as I said they are so flavorful... not only does the seasonings I use pack it with a great flavor but the smokiness of the smoked ham hocks and the chicken broth???? OMG..... TONS of flavor..... you may have a flavor orgasm when you get done eating these so be warned hahahaha. I hope you enjoy! Happy New Year's!!! _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Instructions 1. Focusing on the beans is the first thing you need to do. So pour your package of black eyed peas into a big bowl and vigilantly look through them and remove all the bad ones (discolored, split, or smashed). 2. After removing the bad beans, cover the remaining GOOD beans with cool water, and store in the refrigerator over night or for at least 8 hours. This is not a requisite step, but I like to do it anyway.... old folks think this cuts down on the cooking time because sitting the black eyed peas in the water for hours softens them which is evident by the swelling of the beans. 3. Chop your onions and peppers into small pieces. 4. Place a pot over medium heat, then add your butter, onions, peppers, and minced garlic, then stir in well. Sautee them for 5 to 7 minutes. 5. Add your bouillon cubes, bay leaves, and 4-5 tbs of pbj's creole seasoning, then stir in well. Now my personal seasoning is not going to give the black eyed peas that much salt... so feel free to add more salt at the end once the black eyed peas are done if you feel you need more. My seasoning makes them just salty enough to taste, but sometimes I do end up needing to add more salt. 6. Follow that up by adding your hocks. Make sure to rinse them off first to remove any residue that maybe on them. 7. Next, you're going to add your black eyed peas and your broth. This broth gives it so much flavor but because of how much flavor my personal creole seasoning gives this dish, you dont really need the broth but more flavor is always better right? But yea if you don't have broth dont worry they should still be very good as I've made them without broth a few times before. 8. Add your water and diced tomatoes, then stir everything in well. 9. Cover the black eyed peas with a lid, leaving a crack on the sides so the liquid doesn't overflow. Covering them gets them nice and tender. 10. Cook the black eyed peas for at least 3 to 3-1/2 hours. Make sure to stir them periodically, every 30 minutes or so so they don't stick. I used a non sticking pot so I didn't really need to worry about that much. If you're not using a non sticking pot, pay close attention to them to make sure they dont stick, especially during the last hour of cooking time. Enjoy!!!!
I have prepared many of PBJ's great recipes and, as an avid home cook with professional kitchen experience, and enormous love for genuine American home cooking, so much of the best of which is the creation of African Americans in the country kitchens of the agricultural South and in the Northern manufacturing city home kitchens of the 20th century, I can tell you PBJ captures the best of these dishes with his amazing recipes and solid techniques. This is one of those recipes. Full of goodness, real flavor and tradition, this recipe and his collard greens are what I would have for a last meal, or any meal, if given the choice. His instructions are appropriately detailed and you can never go wrong if you follow exactly what he says. Philly Boy Jay is a RUclips treasure.
I made these for New Year’s Day 2021, and they are sooo good. For those of you wanting a no meat version, just leave it out. I used smoked paprika and 1/2 tsp of liquid smoke to replace the flavor from the meat. Delicious! Thank you!!!
And When You Add A Whole Cinnamon Stick And Some Ginger In Your Beans My Gosh You're Feel Like You're In Heaven Eating You All Just Try It Also Too For Non Meat Eaters & To You All Meat Eaters As Well Too That's Some Good Eating I May Say Myself Indeed.
Happy New Year 2021! My pot of black eye peas is on the stove and I will be ringing in the New Year in just 2 hours in South Korea. Blessings and best wishes to you all in the coming year.

The lady who lived next door to us was African American and gave me a taste of black eyed peas and I fell in love with them. She made them taste so delicious I love'em to this day. That was fifty years ago.
Listen I research for a hour on who had a good black eye peas receipe and I keep coming back to yours....Im so happy I did because it was delicious and my spouse was very happy 😍 Thank you
I fell asleep so I'm making them today. They are almost done. I modified the seasonings a little bit due to not being able to handle heat. I tasted the broth though a little bit ago and these beans are about to be fire! How did yours turn out?
Made these last night and they were really good. Even my picky son ate some. They were a smidge salty but I think it was my fault. I was enjoying my drink and I think I put 5 tablespoons of the creole seasoning in the pot lol
I used this receip and my peas came out so delicious and I don’t even eat black eye peas but then black eye peas so goood my baby boy loves them I’m definitely using this more.
Thank you Philly Boy! Glad to find a place to comment. I love your videos. I'm a pretty fair cook, but I've learned some things from you. I can tell you love cooking!
My brutha, UR videos r AMAZING. This brings back childhood memories of my mom n grandma cooking blackeye peas. N u went OLD school with the ham hocks, WOW u need to be on the food network please keep the videos coming!!!!!!!
Phillyboy,we cook blackeye peas too in our Country.I am from Guyana South America and that's our tradition every Old Years night is to cook blackeye peas for New Years. But we cook our blackeye peas with rice and meat. Its so amazing that another Country shares the same tradition as us,Wow!!! It's amazing, but nice.We do a one pot with blackeye peas, meat any type, rice, coconut milk, spices etc and it's delicious. Why we cook this food on Old Years Day? They say is for New Years Day to meet us with food in our pot so all throughout the year our pot won't be empty lol.I must say all your recipes looks delicious hmmmmmm.Wish I was there to eat,😂) And yes! We soaks our blackeye peas overnight too, then boil it for awhile.
I read that black eyed peas is a west African tradition and was brought to various countries within the Americas (north and south America) so it's no surprise it's eaten in both the US and in Guyana. Probably in other countries in the Americas as well. People in the US also eat them with rice and meat (mainly pork).
On New Year's day here in the U.S. most of us eat pork with black eyed peas (believed to bring wealth) and a slice of cornbread (believed to bring you gold). For superstitions we have to cook pork for this meal on New Year's but any other time of the year we will cook other types of meat. The reason is because pigs always root forward telling us to move forward into the new year and never go backwards. We can't eat chicken, duck, turkey, or any birds because they will fly away with our good luck. We can't eat beef because cows stand still to eat and they will make your luck stagnant and never progress when we should be working toward a brighter and happier future. Never settled because you feel comfortable and keep moving for something better.
Awesome!! My recipe is almost the same except for the tomatoes and I don't pre soak.. I rather the beans fill up with broth and seasoning instead of water. Takes longer but so worth it... now I'm hungry..geez!! Lol
keybearer26 Hi there...according to the package depends on how much you are making. I'd say at the one hour mark I'd start tasting the peas for tenderness . If they are not tender then keep cooking and testing in 10 minutes increments until done. Hope that helps:) good luck
Jay, your'e right, this is the best black eyed peas recipe EVER! The seasonings and ham hocks give so much delicious flavoring. One thing - I didn't have enough room in my pot to add the 2nd quart of water - so I had it ready to add but it was cooking and thickening so nice it didn't require it so I never added it. It may have even enhanced the flavoring - I don't know, but it was fantastic. I married a southerner and have always made the New Year's traditional black eyed peas - but this is the only one I'll ever need. Thanks P.S. I cooked it the same amount of time you suggested.
That's great... it's always good to hear the fans tell me how much they loved my recipes. I put a lot of effort into perfecting my them... compliments make all the hard work worth it... appreciate it. Happy New Years to you and yours! Be Blessed~

Every year for the holidays for soooooo many things I’m here on your channel to get my usuals from you. Thank you! Thank!! I love to cook and I love playing with other folks recipes as well. Happy New Year!!!!
I like starting off that way myself on a lot of dishes by frying the seasoning at the beginning until they're well roasted and they're aroma comes up and slaps me in the face 🤣 the extra boost of flavor that you get for that extra step is phenomenal! 🤗
this looks so delicious and flavorful one thing that I have learned when using your recipes is it has flavor I just made your banana pudding and it was delicious keep up the good work thumbs up
Similar to how I make mine, I use Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning, powdered chicken bullion, diced tomatoes, rotel, onions, salt, pepper and bacon, I have them going in my crock pot right now and boy do they smell good!
@@JadeFoxUnfiltered I come back every yr, they’re always amazing. I take some to my friends up the road cause I live alone and they always rave about them 😂

My family is from the south so this is what I grew up on. With cornbread, fried potatoes, and greens.
THESE ARE AMAZING!!!! Very flavorful, just a tad salty BUT still so good. This one will be archived and made throughout the year!
I will be making these for New Years. I love black eyed peas.
Lisette Sinclair you need a channel to share your wonderful South American recipes. I would love to watch & mske them.

Yes Jess yes. We have to carry on these traditions. Nobody can take those away.

I love how thorough you are with your recipes and instructions. I'm going to try these recipes for sure ! Thank you 😊
I'm not much of a BEP fan, but I'll definitely eat those. They look absolutely amazing. Go head with your bad self PhillyBoyJay!!!!
Awesome!! My recipe is almost the same except for the tomatoes and I don't pre soak.. I rather the beans fill up with broth and seasoning instead of water. Takes longer but so worth it... now I'm hungry..geez!! Lol
Selina DeLoach Hello Selina 😀 how much longer does take? I plan on making this for Christmas dinner 🙄
keybearer26 Hi there...according to the package depends on how much you are making. I'd say at the one hour mark I'd start tasting the peas for tenderness . If they are not tender then keep cooking and testing in 10 minutes increments until done. Hope that helps:) good luck
Selina DeLoach Thanks 😁
Be Blessed~

I like starting off that way myself on a lot of dishes by frying the seasoning at the beginning until they're well roasted and they're aroma comes up and slaps me in the face 🤣 the extra boost of flavor that you get for that extra step is phenomenal! 🤗
