Wolverine didn't lose his Australian accent in animation until X-Men the Animated Series. Based on Pryde of the X-Men and the two appearances in Spidey and His Amazing Friends or The Amazing Spider-Man I believe he was intended to always be Australian. The Wolverine Saga and Marvel Comics wasn't released until after X-Men the Animated Series so his origin was still unknown at that time.

To quote Bender from futurama : "Hahahahaha... oh wait you're serious! Let me laugh even harder... HAHAHAHAHA"
Sure that the franchise was important to start the rebirth of the super hero movies in the 2000, but, at least in my opinion, with the exception of Logan and the Deadpool movies, most of Fox x-men movies were either ok to straight up boring.
Not to mention that for a movie about a super hero team, in which the main focus should be on the characters and their interactions and dynamics, most of the x-men don't have development, and they were sidelined in favor of Wolverine and Jennifer Lawrence (I'm not calling her Mystique. She was Jennifer Lawrence playing Jennifer Lawrence). The worst exemples of this been Cyclops and Storm, who in the comics are two of the most important members and leaders of the team.

I got this around the time the 1992 cartoon debuted on Fox Kids. I watched the Pryde of the X-Men tape many times, and loved the tie-in Konami game that was in arcades. I have a lot of fond memories of this one, but looking back the 1992 version definitely came at the right time, and found the right audience with the right tone. I'm not sure a cartoon built off of the Pryde pilot would have lasted as long. Also even though the animation looked good in the pilot, highly unlikely they could keep up that quality moving forward.

This will be an interesting sentence I'm about to say...but I remember as a kid, I stumbled upon the VHS tape of "Pryde of the X-Men" in Hollywood Video in the early 2000's. I was quickly intrigued by the cover, and grabbed it. To a little kid, it wasn't cringe worthy or campy, it was just cool. Now I can see why it's a little goofy, but man was the animation beautiful. Obviously I liked the 90's animated show better, but I always wondered why I couldn't find more of that version until I got older.

When the XMen appeared on Spiderman it was a big deal. Me and my friends were just enchanted by it. This was back before Xmen were mainstream...when DC characters like Superman and Batman were the norm. So the X-men were new and weird and exotic. Nightcrawler looked like a villain. There was nothing like Colossus or Wolverine in comics. And the idea that your powers could be a liability was very novel (Cyclops had to wear a visor because he could not control it...his optic blasts were like a faucet you couldn't shut off). Rogue was like that too, and it was actually a core part of the plot that coverted her from a villain to a hero (The now-famous Ms. Marvel, then known as Binary, was a key part of that story). Their powers were as much a curse as a blessing, and that was not normal in comics before the Xmen came along.
And yeah, Australian wolverine was ridiculous. But at the time, he added to the exotic feel of the characters. My friends and I used to mimic his lines "Now it's muuaay tuhhn". I'm actually pretty sick of wolverine now, but back then he was weird and new. It was really cool seeing these characters on an actual mainstream show. 7th grade me would be in awe of what we have today...a dozen+ movies of the X-men characters alone, nevermind peripheral characters like the New Mutants. Back then it looked like the X-Men would remain on the fringe forever, so I never expected even a low budget movie to be made about them.

It's always baffled me how Marvel Productions never fully embraced the idea of bringing more of their superheroes to animation during the 80's, and instead, worked with other licensors on their shows. (Particularly, Hasbro, and Jim Henson) While 'Pryde Of The X-Men' isn't anywhere near as good as the Fox series, it's animation more than made up for it. I kinda wish Marvel went with Toei for the Fox series instead of Akom because Akom wasn't very good at doing super hero animation.

I've wondered about this for awhile, especially since both 80's Spider-Man cartoons had episodes that seemed like they could have been launching points for other characters. Captain America even had his own animated intro in one of the episodes he appeared in, complete with a narration. And i think Marvel was having financial problems back in the 90's, so that was probably why they relied solely on AKOM.

And Australia Wolverine would have never worked.

Pryde of the X-Men was my 1st introduction to the X-Men franchise. I was about 8 or 9 years old and always watched Saturday and Sunday morning cartoons. This came on in a Sunday during the same block that had Bravestarr.
This show made me think X-men was the coolest thing ever. But I was disappointed they didn't make any more. The only link I had to it was the X-Men Arcade game wich became one of my favorite games of all time.
This episode actually spoiled the 1992 series for me because I had fallen in love with the cast of Characters from Pryde of The X-Men. They were my introduction to the franchise and thus what I thought were the true X-Men.
The 1992 series had many different characters starting out in the main cast so it was a bit jarring for me. It took me a long time to get used to it.
Pryde of The X-men made Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Cyclops my favorite characters.

The only flaw that I feel there is with Pryde of The Xmen was Wolverine's voice. Other than that it's really too bad that it wasn't picked up because the artwork and the animation was spectacular and above and beyond that of the 90's xmen series which only had the 89 pilot beat in the storytelling and voice acting department. I wish that Pryde of the Xmen were released as bonus content on a 90's xmen animated series DVD

The one thing that I don’t understand is that Wolverine was always a Canadian character in the comics, or at least he lived in Canada during his time in the Weapons Plus Program as Weapon X and as a member of the Canadian Mutant team Alpha Flight. So if a good chunk of Wolverine’s backstory was already written and Cannon during the 1980s, then why did Marvel Entertainment make him Australian in Spiderman and Amazing Friends and Pryde of the Xmen!? That’s something I’ll never fully understand. With that being said I grew up watching Pryde of the Xmen and I always wondered why it never became a full fledged cartoon series? I had no idea that Marvel Entertainment was bought by another company that put all of their up and coming shows on hold. It all makes so much sense now! Thank you so much for sharing this information! Honestly I’m glade they scraped the 89 show and gave us the 1992 Xmen series instead! This was a fantastic video and I look forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!
