Bro, you the best! Most video's on youtube are like hidden advertisements to sell their brushsets but you giving it out for free gets much love from me and shows that you are really here to help people learn how to draw and people like you are a rare breed on youtube these days. Anyways, thank you for taking the time to do all this and i have no doubt that many people will appreciate it.
@Square Breaker Thank you so much for your kind words, people have been very kind and it gives me a lot of positive vibe to continue and keep going. Really appreciate that 🙏😀
Is there an another way to contact u ... cause i have no instagram , ... but i rly need help to understand why u paint first the whole art in gray scaling but than not use it later an repaint everything with colors to overlay it at the end with ur shadow and lights ....so u literally discard ur grayscaling in the merge part at the end ... but way ?
I appreciate you saying that shadows don’t have to be perfect, I get paralyzed in putting in shadows for fear that they will be “wrong” so I will be trying your advice :)
Shadows can be wrong if lighting is incorrectly placed; shadows can be incorrect as they are the opposite of the light source and are cast from the object. Angles absolutely matter with cast shadows and Form shadows (native object shadows that défine the object) Shadows that are for more organize and visually complex shapes (usually nature) do not need to be so accurate Shadow accuracy is dependent upon what you’re drawing I hope this helps!
FINALLY! I have looked at many videos trying to color my characters and I just haven't been able to do well. Your video has finally clearly explained how to do it! I tried it out and I was shocked to see that I had colored my art! I am beyond happy! Thank you for keeping it short and straight to the point!
Just discovered this. Thank you for the simple breakdown. As someone who doesn’t use greyscale to colour, I feel this method could really help. I’ll be sure to try it.
It’s great to follow this process , it’s making you work more efficiently, sometimes I don’t follow any logic steps , I sketch , I start to use color and after I put the shadow so I come back to fix the colour layer with the shadow , after that I come back to fix the sketch layer and so on , it’s really time consuming …. Thanks for sharing your process , nice art as well !
Brilliant. Even though I didn’t need the lesson in values, this is incredibly thorough information for beginners. This was executed perfectly. And how adorable is he??? ❤
Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I never knew how to grayscale till now and i used this video to help me grayscale my drawing and it came out great!!
If you want to convert an already coloured image into grayscale, you can add a layer at the top of all your layers and drop black onto the whole thing, then set its blend mode to colour. It helps show where the brightness-contrast is, but sometimes saturation is enough
That was excellent but I have so many questions, like what brushes were you using, at what opacities, how were you selecting things to make them transformable? Things like that. I appreciate what you have shown, this is a great How I approach Rendering. I think this is above me and I need the How to Use Brushes and Layers tutorial. I’ll be back however to see this again once I get the basics.
Best tutorial I came across talking about how to color, I dont even have procreate but I'll be able to do it on my samsung tablet with my app because you mentioned the layers mide etc thank you
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS! you really helped me out with this tutorial and I'm learning lots from you! please create more content, I will be supporting your videos!
I use procreate to sketch on the go and clip studio paint for lineart and coloring. I love using grayscale to help me define things and lighting early on because it’s a huge pain when you begin to color and need to change values due to incorrect lighting. When I started art in general my lighting would be off in some areas, so grayscale rendering helped me focus on that. What I love though that that before you even begin adding shadows is that you use different grays. I use 808080 gray as a flat and then render shadows and lighting on top of that. I never thought to do what you’re doing and I think will help everything render more fluidly! I also never thought to change the shadow layers using the color adjustment tools. I always turned the transparency lock on and colored directly on the layer, but what you’re doing is less destructive. I also see you toggle your line art/sketch on and off. Is this to help define the character design more? Something I struggle with is making my line art work with how I define the lighting. Often my shadows look painterly compared to a thick and rigid line art that I would compare to a comic book style. I really enjoyed this tutorial and will try to implement some of this (especially the values into my own illustrations).
Thank you so much for the detailed comment! Yes same here, I think grayscale rendering is time saving and it helps to develop ideas like lighting direction quickly, or getting to a conclusion about how we wanna go about forms, just like clay sculpting without being worried about hue and saturation. :) My goal was to simplify each step so that it's easy to repeat especially for beginners, so I separated local values from it's light and shadows. Regarding toggling on and off the line art, I would say it's habit to see if I'm following the boarders correctly, or sometimes I define fold direction with lines so I double check to see if I'm painting correctly! I'm glad you enjoyed this tutorial and thanks for watching! 🙂
*It will take me long time to be this refined you are artist but I want to draw and fill colors like this. But seeing filling colors with logics made me realise good thing just don't come easily people put lots of efforts in them. You compressed your work in 14 mins but I'm sure it's not just 14 mins work*
Thank you so much for such detailed video...it helps a lot..i love your artwork with so much tiny detailing. Please can you make episode on how to find story from references and how to put 2-3 references in one illustration. Thank you
Hi habooks, your tutorials are easy to understand thank you for sharing to us, I've some questions concerning this video: 1. Is lineart necessary? 2. It is possible to paint shadow using one value? 3. It is allowed to paint lighter shadow value on darker value object?
Thank you Satria! Lineart is just a guide, it's not necessary but it's helpful. Although sometimes it's a part of the style. Regarding shadows, I would say you can definitely simplify but in real world shadows always have different values and level of darkness. Depending on your style you can consider it as one value or multiple values.
How is your Thai language coming along? Can you speak Thai now? I purchased your brush. I used to live in Chiang Mai for over 10 years and can speak Thai fluently. Now I'm in Toronto, Canada.
Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been struggling a bit with understanding how to colour in Procreate. This video is the best one I’ve found yet 🙏🏼
Hello can you show how you made it greyscale and how you kept it in the lines etc. Not sure how you left out the most important step. Newbie here thanks!
Awesome videos! One suggestion for future videos would be to slow down the playback speed a bit when you show the layers menu and other menus, often it’s very hard to follow what layer’s where, what’s a clipping mask etc.
i learned a lot from your video! and also downloaded your brushes! thank you! ❤ also i was surprised that you are from Thailand when you mentioned grab 5555
This tutorial is amazing, it has helped my shading so much!!! One question though, how do you pick your colors based off the grayscale version you made? Do you try to match the colors' brightness with each shade of gray you used? (example for the green jacket, did you pick a green with the same brightness as the gray you used on the jacket?) I hope this question makes sense, picking colors has been a struggle!
Thank you Marceline! I'm glad it was helpful! Sometimes I pick the value and increase the saturation and sometimes it's just by feeling and how they look on the canvas! If I feel the color I picked is too dark or bright I use curves to modify it slightly! :)
I love this video, but can someone help with explaining the transition from part one to part two? How did he get all the layers into one grayscale image? Merging the layers doesn’t work. It also seems like all the greyscale work isn’t used in the coloring process?
Love your torturial! Sadly I am haveing problems import the charakter file with a transparent background. Any help to make it work? Thank for a very nice video.
