  • ((Please read the update information below))
    Hi guys,
up until now, both Ender e and Ender 3 Pro were equipped with the Creality 1.1.4 boards.
However, since around mid-July of 2020, users started to receive the Ender 3 Pro with a different board…the V4.2.2.
This is the same board that comes with the brand new Ender 3 V2.
It seems that Creality will make this new board as a standard with the Ender 3 Pro and probably the Ender 3 as well.
In this video, we will explain how to get, edit and upload the firmware to this new board.
    ♦ UPDATE:
we noticed that lately some users are having issues compiling the latest Marlin version (2.9.0.3).
So, for that reason, we decided to make a quick video, explaining why this is happening and how to fix it.
In that video, you can also find some information about the new chip (GD32F303RET6 instead of STM32F103RET6) that is being included on some recent printers.

So........... the SD card that came with my stock Ender 3 crapped itself. I grabbed the first SD card i could find and tried to use it. Well, it turns out that it was for a Raspberry PI to run as a Nintendo NES emulator. The Nintendo bin file was still on the card. So when i plugged it in, I basically told my Ender 3 to become a Nintendo NES. *faceplam* of course it bricked it up. I used THIS video to get my Ender 3 back happy again! Thanks again! This video works. just do it EXACTLY step by step and you'll be printing in no time! *insert Mario music*

Hey man, thank you for this video. I just got my Ender 3 Pro a few days ago, and I've spent the last two days disappointed because somehow my firmware got hosed (I think due to a bad SD card) after my first print. I have read forums and threads and articles and watched videos. NONE of them were helpful. This video got me working again. The person that gave it a thumbs down freaking sucks. I hope you make a million bucks. Take care.

For anyone viewing this video a year later:
The process this video follows is almost the exact same. Due to changes with the software (as expected over a year later!), there are a couple additional files that need to be copied -- _Bootscreen.h and _Statusscreen.h . Additionally, the folder which these are found in are also named differently than in the video. Since I own an Ender 3 Pro, I had to do the following:
    Configurations-release-2.0.9.3/config/examples/Creality/Ender-3 Pro/CrealityV422
Once here, copy all five files in that folder. That's really the only difference a year later. One year later from this comment it could be entirely changed! At first, I only copied the three files as the video shows and pasted into the Marlin directory within the firmware folder. However, I received a compiling error pertaining to two missing files (of course, the other two I didn't copy!).
All in all, this is an excellent explanation video. I hope this comment helps anyone confused a year later and trying to update firmware!

This video covers everything that a beginner like myself needed to know. Thanks!

    Update for newer (4.2.7) boards:
** MOTHERBOARD ** At 4:49, in Configuration.h, you need to change: "#define MOTHERBOARD BOARD_CREALITY_V427" -- otherwise the stepper motors won't work at all and the auto-homing will quietly fail every time with an error message ("homing failed Printer Halted please reset"). Also, there is no specific target for boards version 4.2.2, so I suspect the correct motherboard target in that case is still "#define MOTHERBOARD BOARD_CREALITY_V4".
Update March 2023: At minute 4:12, STM32F103RET6_creality is no longer available. It was renamed to STM32F103RE_creality, use that one instead.
    I HOPE THIS HELPS!

I also have a Creality 4.2.2 board. Except it is used for a Ender 5 pro. Your tutorial sorted me from all the chaos of looking up complicated tutorials. In order to find your video, I had to type this search term:
    "creality board documentation 4.2.2"
I had to stop searching for the commonalities, and start looking for the specifics. Thank you for this video.
I may or may not Reply or update this comment to see if the information from this video worked.
Finer detail for you not to worry about me:
    - I will be deviating from the tutorial to fit the Ender 5 pro.
Things to take away for anyone seeing this:
    ## The motherboard is different than the Name that the 3d printer was given. Thus, open your unit up, and see what motherboard you have to determine what firmware to flash.
    # For anyone seeing the error:
    "
You are using an old Configuration.h file, update it before building Marlin.
    "
This means that you went to the configuration Repo "github.com/MarlinFirmware/Configurations/tree/2.0.5.3" Which is not the latest verson of 2.0.7.2.
Instead, go to (github.com/MarlinFirmware/Marlin/tree/2.0.x/config That should Lead you to a proper version configuration.
    # Instead of trying STM32F103RET6_creality, which would be the default for the ender 3 pro,
Try sanguino1284p for the Ender 5 pro
The reason why sanguino1284p, is because normally in the arduino IDE, you would just go to tools -> Sanguino
However, the environment needs to be changed to reflect that on platformio.ini
    default_envs = sanguino1284p
Remove 'Speaker' and 'ARC_Support' to save space. I had barely enough room to fit it. (96.8%)
    .hex files will work too!
    It was a success! Horrah!
    6:25am CST
It took about 2 hours from now to get it to work. I hope anyone who sees this helps.

New Ender 3 user experience. Grrr, I am so disappointed in my new Ender 3. I purchased the nano and the wires and waited two weeks to install a bootloader. I just opened the Ender 3 and found the board different. I then found this video. My patience is really beginning to grow short with this thing. Why on earth do these ship with incomplete software and firmware. I'm sitting here thinking if it's worth sending the Uno board back which is a paper weight now. What a waste of time researching and installing software that doesn't work with this new version, hours of failed testing. Now that I finished my rant, I will finish watching this video hopefully there aren't any other unforeseeable changes. Okay, I installed Visual Studio Coder. The platform IO extension is available in Visual Studio. No need to search google for the download. When downloading the Marlin Zip it only had the Configurations-release-2.1.2 folder. I found the Marlin 2.1.2 folder on Sourceforge with the same version. I am not sure why this wasn't in the video. There are a lot more options now in the config file for Creality Ender 3 V2. I decided to pick Creality instead of Marlin UI. Update: I have the mainboard with chip GD32F303 RET6. This is a new chip which has a lot of problems which Marlin doesn't support. Someone said "At this time use manufactures provided firmware only." I wondering if I should return this thing. Reading on "github.com/MarlinFirmware/Marlin/issues/23806"

    Hi guys :)
As we mention in this video, many users were receiving their Ender3 / Ender3 Pro with the same board as the Ender 3 V2, the version 4.2.2.
However, there were cases of printers running quietly and, other cases, of printers running with the traditional "printing noise".
What came to be confirmed was that some boards (4.2.2) were equipped with TMC drivers (those that run quietly) and others were equipped with HR4988 drivers (those running with the traditional "printing noise).
At this moment and, as you can confirm on the Creality official website, they announced that Ender3/Ender3 Pro will have the 4.2.2 board from stock.
It will be equipped with a 32-bit microcontroller but, unlike the Ender3 V2, it will have HR4988 drivers instead.
For those who need to confirm which drivers are equipped on the boards and, don´t want to remove the heatsinks, this can be easily checked by the noise from the motors while printing.
As mentioned above, boards equipped with TMC drivers will run quietly.
To update the firmware on the Ender3/Ender3 Pro equipped with this new board you can follow our tutorial, but with attention to the drivers installed on your printer.
Our video focuses on the case of boards equipped with TMC drivers, however, if your board has HR4988 drivers instead, you will have to make some changes in the firmware.
1️⃣ Search the following lines in configuration.h file:
    define X_DRIVER_TYPE TMC2209
    define Y_DRIVER_TYPE TMC2209
    define Z_DRIVER_TYPE TMC2209
    ...
    define E0_DRIVER_TYPE TMC2209
    ...and replace by:
    define X_DRIVER_TYPE A4988
    define Y_DRIVER_TYPE A4988
    define Z_DRIVER_TYPE A4988
    ...
    define E0_DRIVER_TYPE A4988
2️⃣ Search the following lines in configuration.h file:
    define INVERT_X_DIR true
    define INVERT_Y_DIR true
    define INVERT_Z_DIR false
    ...
    define INVERT_E0_DIR true
...and switch the logic from "True" to "False" and vice-versa:
    define INVERT_X_DIR false
    define INVERT_Y_DIR false
    define INVERT_Z_DIR true
    ...
    define INVERT_E0_DIR false
    ♦ UPDATE:
we noticed that lately, some users are having issues compiling the latest Marlin version (2.9.0.3).
So, for that reason, we decided to make a quick video, explaining why this is happening and how to fix it.
In that video, you can also find some information about the new chip (GD32F303RET6 instead of STM32F103RET6) that is being included on some recent printers.
You can check the new video here:

      @ruiraptor  3 года назад

@@JonTheJoker , there are 2 ways of knowing which drivers you have on your board. One is to remove the heatsinks and read the model on the chip and the other is to turn on the printers and move the axis (or run a print) and check if your stepper motors make noise or not. Then, you edit the driver settings in the firmware according to which drivers you have.

Help, please: I am following this video bit by bit. There is no Ender 3 Pro V1.5 folder in the 2.0.9.1 Configuration folder, just Ender 3 Pro. So I went into that one and into the CrealityV422 (that's the board I have- I opened it up and looked) and copied those files instead. It has two additional files more than your video does, but I presumed to copy/replace them all over. Finish going through the steps and I get the green "1 succeeded" at the end of the terminal run. I assume I have the HR4988 drivers since my machine makes noise and checked the configuration.h file for the driver types you listed below. Mine were all already set to A4988, so I didn't have to switch anything. However in the "problems" section of VSCode it takes me to a warning that says "#warning "Creality 4.2.2 boards may have A4988 or TMC2208_STANDALONE drivers. Check your board and make sure to select the correct DRIVER_TYPE!"
All that to say at the end of the compile, I do not have a .pio folder to go to in my Marlin folder, and when I do a spotlight search for the firmware file with the .bin extension, it does not exist. What am I doing wrong? I'm on a Mac, if that makes a difference.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  3 года назад +1

      Hi,
that warning is to confirm which driver type you have. Since your motors are noisy, then you might have the 4988s. Regarding the compilation, if you get the succeeded at the end, a few lines above you should see the firmware.bin file location indication. Also, if you look at the left window (in visual studio code) you have the tree with the firmware files. In there you should also find the .pio. If yes, place the mouse over it and click on the right mouse button. You should have a "reveal in file explorer" option. Select it and it will open the folder for you.

edit: I already made an impression of a small object (one hour duration) and the configuration works very well, at the moment there is no problem and from what it seems the ender 3 shares the same configuration as the ender 3 pro so if you have an ender 3 with 4.2.2 board works this video

Hi Ruiraptor, unfortunately I've had no success at all trying to upgrade my firmware. My recently purchased Ender 3 Pro came supplied with Marlin 1.3.1 firmware and the V4.2.2 board. After installing the 4.2.2 BL Touch the printer will no longer store any settings either on the SD card or the eprom. I have tried upgrading the firmware to the latest 2.0.7.2 but that stopped everything from working. I then tried using the Marlin.crc.id.au site and downloaded the latest Ender 3 Pro with BL touch bin. file and flashed the printer. All the additional functions appeared but again nothing worked including the BL touch. After about 2 days trying to follow different videos I finally gave up and put the printer back to the original firmware. I can get successful prints but I usually need to spend about 2-3 hours trying to get the Z offset working correctly each time I switch the machine on. The beeper no longer works and when I try to save the settings it just will not do it. Another problem seems to be that with most videos they are using a different version of Marlin and I don't have some of the controls that they say to go to so they also just don't work for my printer.

None of this applied to my situation.
I came here because the title read "ENDER 3 / ENDER 3 PRO With Board 4.2.2 - How To UPDATE FIRMWARE"
I only wanted to add the auto-bed levelling and what Creality provided was very little, "Go to this website. Get the fiirmware suitable for your printer."
It tells me nothing about updating the firmware.
And this video tells me about getting firmware and fiddling with it. Why do I need to fiddle with it?
Plenty of time was wasted on what Creality used to do with their printers.
