    From Season 3 Episode 1 "No Más"
    Breaking Bad follows protagonist Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who lives in New Mexico with his wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (RJ Mitte) who has cerebral palsy. White is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of two years left to live. With a new sense of fearlessness based on his medical prognosis, and a desire to secure his family's financial security, White chooses to enter a dangerous world of drugs and crime and ascends to power in the world. The series explores how a fatal diagnosis such as White's releases a typical man from the daily concerns and constraints of normal society and follows his transformation from mild family man to a kingpin of the drug trade.

      The fact that Anna Gunn's role (and SOMEtimes, her, as an actress!) was hated by a truckload of viewers just goes to show how messed up society is. Narcissistic megalomaniacs are REVERED. Loved. Adored. Idolized. It's actually embarrassing.
      Even Johnny Depp's magnificent performance as "Jack Sparrow" shows how society seems to favor toxic narcissists as long as they're handsome, pretty, or "funny". Again, not DEPP in this case, but his character. And the irony was that NPDer of an ex he had (Amber Heard). 🤮
      Anyhow. Anna Gunn's performance was as powerful--if not MORE powerful--than Cranston's. She did more with less, and that character was the only real pivot point "back towards humanity". Even Hank's ego wasn't a shadow of the virtue to which Skylar was clinging. BB is a tragedy, but for whatever reason, Vince Gilligan and Bryan Cranston were able to get audiences to attach to WW. Yes, he began as a sort of "helpless hero" character. But the lines he crossed DEFINITELY morphed him into a villain. Pretty much by the whole "Stay outta my territory" threat. And long before "Say my name".
      Incredible show. But worshipping WW (the character) is a wackadoodle's mindset, lol.

      the show is largely shown from walt's point of view. which is why even though people see him as a villain, they still have that kind of 'underdog rooting for for walt' vibe. the audience sees skyler as a reason for walts eventual downfall and failure. if we look at it from skyler's perspective, we have a lying husband who'd rather risk endangering himself and his family than accept money from others which would bruise his ego. an example of this is when walt finally confesses he did the whole thing for himself, we as an audience almost feel glad for walt, even though hes just admitted how selfish and cruel he actually has been the last 2 years. the show will or always portray walt in a better light as its based around him supposedly 'leaving money for his family'.

She is in many ways the person Walt thinks he is, dragged into the criminal life despite having no wishes to, but ultimately is doing it all for the family. She should have cut her losses with Walt in Season 3, but her willingness to protect her son won out in the end.

  • @Tripod9648
    @Tripod9648 11 месяцев назад +88

    Many individuals unjustly despise Skyler for the wrong reasons. The show primarily focuses on the perspective of Walter White, causing viewers to overlook the daily struggles of Skyler's life and the extent of deception and betrayal she has endured from her husband. If the show had dedicated more screen time to portraying Skyler's experiences and the immense heartache caused by Walter's actions, the audience would undoubtedly sympathize with her.
    In truth, Skyler no longer loves Walt. Her husband's deceitfulness began when he concealed his cancer diagnosis for weeks and continued as he regularly disappeared for hours, reappearing late at night. His emotional distance and strained relationship with Skyler grew gradually. Moreover, for an entire year, Walter refused to communicate, rendering himself emotionally unavailable and distant. This contrasted starkly with the man Skyler had married 15 years prior; he was now unrecognizable. It is no surprise that she sought solace in the company of Ted Beneke. Ted provided the emotional support and presence that Walter failed to offer. Despite Walter's attempts to justify his actions under the guise of "supporting his family," the stark reality remains that he neglected his wife for an extended period of time.
    Skyler is an intelligent woman, and it was not a matter of if she would uncover the truth, but rather a matter of when.

    • @user-wh4vq2yn8g
      @user-wh4vq2yn8g 9 месяцев назад +3

      I disagree, I think you see plenty of Skyler's perspective during the show and it's one where she is desperate for everything to be under her domestic sphere of control, and it has toxified her family environment. Walt is not really a husband or a father, but someone just living in this domestic environment that Skyler has manufactured for all of them. On top of that you have Hank openly humiliating Walt, where Skyler does nothing to come to his defence, or to empower him at all.
      I find it surprising more people defend Skyler, as if she's somehow an innocent, where if genders were reversed Skyler would be seen as very hounding and possessive character who was obsessed with what her partner was always doing, and going on about themselves constantly. Double standards for men and women I think.

    • @Tripod9648
      @Tripod9648 9 месяцев назад +17

      @@user-wh4vq2yn8g Skyler has a wife and mother definitely had her flaws, but Walter flaws trumps over any kind of flaw Skyler may have lacked. Yes, Skyler can be seen in the first episode as being very controlling. But I believe people misjudge this notion. Skyler tracks credit cards, phone calls, and openly confronts Walt’s contacts because, she is smart. Skyler is a very vigilant, observing partner. As soon as Walter starts to change, she catches on quick. If anything, this shows her love and care for her husband. Had she been a dumb blond bimbo who could care less about her husband, the show wouldn’t have any stakes. But it’s the fact that she observes the subtle changes that make her into a very caring partner and mother. Skyler has tried to openly have serious conversation with Walt’s behaviors. She does everything in her power to bring that beloved husband she knew for so many years. But that same man was no longer there. She may as well have been talking to a stranger. To a brick wall.
      She’s not a innocent housewife. She conspired with Walt’s crimes and helped and even laundered his money for him. She’s an accessory after the fact. But she was also put into an unwindable position from the start. By the time she found out, Walt had already associated himself with high level players like Gus, and has spend a year paying off their mortgage with illicit drug money. She goes to the police, the situation will go from bad to worse. The house will be taken away by the government, the DEA will fire Hank, her children will grow up thinking that their mother put their father in jail. For what is worth, Walt joined the criminal underworld to create his own form of cancer to get back at the world. Skyler did it to keep her family save. Something Walt neglected the day he decided to sell meth.

    • @user-wh4vq2yn8g
      @user-wh4vq2yn8g 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@Tripod9648 She tracks him because she's suspicious of any independent or assertive behaviour that doesn't involve her. She basically is affronted that he might have any life outside of the family inbetween work and taking Walt Jr. to school. He has no hobbies or interests that we can see, and really doesn't do much else. If a woman was in such a situation we would say this is low-key abuse and certainly toxic. Skyler is smart, but in a scheming way, and in the beginning its the family that is under her scheme. Then it's a scheme to help Ted's tax evasion and to punish Walt. Then it's a scheme to launder Walt's money. Then finally a scheme to extricate herself from the crimes. Always the schemer, much like Walt in some ways. The difference is that Walt's schemes were initially for altruistic reasons, whereas Skyler seemed more driven by fear.
      It makes you wonder that if Skyler had been more attentive and supportive to Walt, it wouldn't have unleashed Heisenberg. When you consider the brutal humiliation and emasculation of Walt, from his toxic home environment to Grey Matter shoving their wealth and success in his face with lavish garden parties and pity offerings, whilst battling terminal illness, is it any wonder he went off the deep end?
      Maybe that's the meaning of the show's title, the world broke Walt and turned him bad. As the Joker said, it only takes one bad day to reduce a sane man to lunacy. Maybe I resent Skyler more not because of the weight of the crimes, but because she never had any moral justifications beyond herself, whereas Walt had plenty even if they may have been delusional by the end.

      Paul Greengrass popularized that style of over-the-shoulder, handheld zoomed in close-ups with the Bourne trilogy.

    I know diddly squat about acting but if you can make feigned outrage believable then follow it by intrigue (Can I? Tell her? How will she receive it if I lay it all out?) while acting puzzled of how she came to this preposterous conclusion. To my simple brain that's damn good acting! Not acting in a verbal or physical way but able to just wear it on your facial expressions. That impresses me. Fear, dishonesty, ambition, manipulation, ego, pride. So many selfish things Walter exudes only for the viewer to recognize.

    I'm getting Jerry Lundegaard vibes from Walt. He's constantly talking and stumbling and all I hear is "I'm working with ya on this thing here!"
