Zadar has witnessed fascism, Nazi regime, communism, and all of this is reflected in its architecture. I recommend starting with a walk around the People's Square. Since the 13th century, the People's Square has been the centre of social life in Zadar. The hallmark of the square is the City Sentinel, a 16th century building, especially beautiful is the soaring clock tower. Next to the church is the Roman Forum, which was built between the 1st and 3rd century AD and included a temple dedicated to Juno, Jupiter and Minerva, the ancient Roman Gods. It is now a ruin that attracts the interest of archaeologists, as well as a social space where residents and visitors gather frequently. Finally, take time to stroll around the Five Wells Square and the Old Town, so you can get the fullest sense of the city's history.
There are many churches in Zadar. One of the most beautiful is the Church of St Donat, named in honour of Bishop Donat of Zadar, who lived under Charlemagne. The church was built in the IX century, was once both a warehouse and an archaeological museum, and now it hosts various performances, including the annual International Renaissance Music Festival. I also recommend seeing the Cathedral of St Anastasia - it is the largest church in Dalmatia and was built in the XII century. Be sure to check out the bell tower, from here you can enjoy an incredible view of the Adriatic Sea and the city.
