Sadly, people aren't taught financial literacy in school. I had no clue how to do a budget until later in life when I had to pay bills on my own (around that same 27-28yo age range). Until or unless people are taught how $ works, most people most of the time just wing it. I finally learned by reading various books: "Rich Dad/Poor Dad", "The Millionaire Next Door", "The Art of the Deal" & attending The Millionaire Mind seminars by T. Harv Eker. Learning how to make a budget isn't hard, when you experience a mind shift about $ and how to use common sense, make a plan & follow it. You don't need to become a miser, just learn, understand & implement what will work for you and your short-term, mid-term & long-term financial goals. Good Luck to you & wishing much financial success.

Worst mistake I made in making more money was not paying attention to my taxes i.e., paying my taxes (being withdrawn from my paycheck) but not filing. I let them go in a little too long, then when I came into some additional money, I received a bunch of letters from the IRS and the state. What turned out to be about $18,000 in taxes owed, with penalties and interest was over $40,000. I enrolled in a six-year plan with the IRS and you cannot miss one payment, if you do, yo’re in default, they withdraw the payment plan, and all of the money is owed. Six years I never missed one payment. Hard lesson learned. That was almost 10 years ago, And since then, other than my monthly expenses and other financial obligations, I’ve remained debt free but it takes hard work.

Yep most of them not used to money so they don’t know how far their money really stretches.
Because i work contracts, my work income fluctuates between 60k-180k but my passive income is a steady 70k. So In total I’m usually alway over 100k. But my expenses are set to be able to survive under 70k.
If I want something I pay cash so that I don’t have to owe anybody anything. I only have two mortgages and 1 car payment. However I have my another car paid off, and over 20k in savings to use for investments, I also have plenty invested in stocks and crypto.

5 years ago I sold my house in downtown Nashville & paid off the balance of my remaining 19 yr mortgage. It was a 3 bedroom home & I was the only one living there. The last person living there w/me was my son( only child ) while he was going to college. He finished & moved out of state for a job opportunity. I found no need to have a home w/that much space being single so I sold it. I bought a cheap condo for cash w/what was left over after the bank got theirs. BUT I no longer had a 19 year mortgage to be responsible for even though I could definitely afford it. My car payment is about to end as well & I don’t see buying another one unless the engine blows out @these new car prices. I live w/n my means & I live comfortably.

This true for a lot of people not just nurses but the problem with the nurses.....they actually make decent money and they usually can pick up and get more hrs if the hospital needs help but WOW the spending of these ladies is crazy..! Not all of them but a lot of them are living way beyond their means. During covid they were making crazy money and instead of saving it, investing it putting it away they just spent it on anything and everything....cars, trips, clothes, expensive apartments, cc, designer this designer that. Jeez people stop it! Oh and now that the hrs are not there nor the incentives some of these nurses are struggling which is nuts.
We should all be striving to become debt free....it literally makes you feel like you won the lotto. The feeling of freedom is so worth it. Dont get me wrong, bills still come and things will pop up but when your debt free and your saving and investing when something pop up its no bid deal its not fun having to spend money on something you would rather not but if it happens you can easily take care of it AND NOT HAVE TO GO IN DEBT to do it. We all have to live below our means and if you have cut everything out and thats not enough you have to figure out how to make more money and when you do make more money do not lifestyle creep. It will pay you literal dividends if you dont lifestyle creep.

Nurses that are making 6 figures are working their rumps off to earn those checks. The flip side of this equation is trapping your life to a 6 figure bottom line full of expensive things that don’t bring joy, only stress. I’ve lived my life to survive off one source of income. Buying designer products will keep you broke and for what? Buying clothes things that you can’t afford to impress folks that don’t matter is a losing strategy that will keep you broke. There’s freedom in not giving a flip about impressing people.

Having no children, all throughout my working career I lived well, and also lived well below my means. I had all sorts of automatic deductions and savings taken out of gross income, which remained untouched until I need them. When I went for retirement, I was told I would have more disposable income than when I was working. Plus, I had a pension.
Nevertheless, I was still able to treat my loved ones well, and answer any call of duty when needed. After all: How many suits, and I STILL HAVE PLENTY, can I wear at once ?

I am married with twin 11 year olds. I went from not having a dollar in my bank account to buying a 5 bedroom 3 full bathroom in NJ in 2022. How did I do this? I married a woman from Mongolia and we save money like crazy. We still eat good and my kids whatever they need. I drive a Kia Sorento and a Toyota corollla. When my wife and I bought our current house, it was our third home. Every house we bought, we applied what we learned owning the home prior. Now, every year, we do something big for our house….and we swap every other year with a necessity, and something that adds value that is a nice to have. For example, one year we did custom closets, then the next year, we added flooring to our basement. Our current home value is nearly double what we paid for it, and we are nearly done paying for it in less that 10 years….trying to be smarter with our finances every year.

I definitely agree people especially nurses are living beyond their means. I did it my first year or two as a nurse but thankfully my brother helped me get my mind right.

I know ppl that make 7 figures for many yrs but are technically “broke”. Yes they may have assets - good house, cars.. etc. but their bank account is empty, etc. it’s all about how much you spend. If you make $200k and save $100k - ur good, if you make $1M and u spend $1M you’re broke. So, that really changes your perspective on finances once you get up to the big bucks. Most of the ppl around me make 6-7 figures. And I know exactly who the big spenders are w/ zero cash… and I know who the “savers” are that don’t have anything flashy but have crazy flushed bank accounts. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ to each, his own
