As a serious Purple fan, I was considerably p*ssed when Ritchie departed. Rainbow's debut was a good effort. I bought Rising solely on the strength of the brilliant cover, which was beautifully painted on a classy Goldwing motor bike. As soon as Tarot Woman kicked in I was happy that Ritchie moved on. All 6 songs are crafted high class. One of the greatest 2nd albums for sure. Camel's Mirage, Led Zeppelin 2, Black Stone Cherry; Folklore and Superstition, Black Country Communion 2, ELP; Tarkus, Genesis; Trespass, Black Sabbath; Paranoid. There's a lot of very good 2nd albums 🎶👍

Dude, we are talking literally doing cover versions. Exact same music, exact same lyrics. Are you really not aware of this?
      Really?
It's as if I put a band together and we did songs like Do You Feel Like We Do, Sweet Home Alabama, Detroit Rock City, Jet Airliner, and others and claiming we wrote those songs. That is what Zep did. They literally stole those songs, all previously recorded, and claimed they wrote them.

As I went through my album collection, I gave up when I got to around 62 sophomore albums and as I did that, it began to occur to me that actually, the norm seems to have been that the sophomore should actually be an improvement on the debut, even if the debut was a barnstormer. There are all kinds of theories about sophomores and I think life and history is more nuanced than theorists often give credit for.
Also, in my life, when I was getting certain discographies together, I rarely heard a band's material in the sequence in which they were released, which may also affect the way I'd see a sophomore or, for that matter, a debut. For example, I was well into Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds of fire" for a good 6 years before I heard "Inner mounting flame" and as much as I think the debut is a stunner, the sophomore was so ingrained in my love that it would be difficult to be supplanted, even though there are a couple of songs on the debut that are superior to anything on "Birds."
Of course, it doesn't always work that way but it does on so many occasions.

This album is way too similar to their debut. A man a city sounds like a cliche of 21st century schizoid man, and the title track sounds alot like Epitaph. That album was not a step forward for this band. Only Cat food - which is more like a musical joke - sounds really fresh. Lizard was much more interesting and innovative album than the second one.

Yes, Helluva Band" rules. Love the first, but this is the one. What are they? Many things, but also heavy metal. That is what we called it in the 70's. Plus "Cream," "Circus," "Rolling Stone," & Playboy." Heavy metal was all over the airwaves, magazines, & people's descriptions in the 70's." Shows my age, but the term heavy metal was widely used since 1973, & really since, "Hendrix's time." We did not call it "proto metal." But that is a whole new argument...

Great stack of Sophmore albums! Some I never heard of, yet I wanna check out asap.
That's what I dig about your show Pete. You educate me and get me into cool bands/albums.
Zeppelin 2 and Van Halen 2 are in this conversation.
Zep 2 in particular. Zep debut is incredible. Killer track listing, many classic songs on there but same goes for Zep 2. The difference is 2 is wayyy dirtier, gritier, heavier uninhibited more variety more more more. I mean the opener Whole Lotta Love alone is a perfect example and sets the tone for the rest of the record. Very influential album too.

Def Leppard, first album was less than average in song quality but did show small flashes of brilliance in places . . . . but their 2nd Album "High N' Dry" totally knocked it out of the park and permanently put them on the map (. . . . and their 3rd album "Pyromania" would change everything, but we're not talking about 3rd albums - so I won't go there)

Song for America was written primarily by Kerry Livgren. But Leftoverture was written entirely by Kerry. Walsh had dried up as a writer. In fact, the album was finished when Kerry came in w/ Carry on Wayward Son. They rehearsed it once, then recorded...history made. What a fabulous songwriter!

Nice to see you included Megadeth-Peace Sells which in my opinion is their best album and Slayer-Hell Awaits which in my opinion may be a better overall album than Reign In Blood although Reign has what are two of their most classic songs in Angel of Death and Raining Blood. But the one I'm really glad you included is Armored Saint -Delirious Nomad, it is a criminally underrated album, it is a top 20 album all time for me and possibly even top 10.

It's got to be Malice 'License To Kill' from 1987....fairly or otherwise, often referred to as the American Judas Priest. The title track, Sinister Double, Chain Gang Woman, Christine...amazing stuff; a polished but heavy production and one of the best screamers in the business in James Neal. They make a very amusing live-performance appearance in 80's comedy-bodyswap-flick 'Vice-Versa' with Judge Reinhold, on YT. "Party til you puke...love, Malice"

Pete Great Job! It's always interesting to listen to someone else's opinions. I had to chime in here, was kinda shocked to hear you stating that ELP's Pictures was actually their second album, it's not. Tarkus is definitely the second. Tarkus released in June of 1971, and pictures released in Nov. 1971. Also Echolyn's As the World was not their sophmore release either, Suffocating the Bloom was, released in 1992, As the World was released in 1995. 4th release.
