I think the ultimate cover song is All along the watchtower by Hendrix.
I agree.
Spot on Pete, Rick, and Ivan.....Hendrix takes it to a new level
@@heygringo7 Hendrix!
true that-you nailed it! Hendrix's magic fretwork combined with Dylan's lyrical genius won't be topped!
Hendrix made watchtower his so much that Dylan does it Jimi style himself, as a tribute to Jimi. No other cover comes close.
Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is mind blowing to me. Trent Reznor said this song belongs to Johnny now and forever.
yep he did say that
I think it’s beyond horrible.
a great song in any version. Johnnys' version is more poignant. but I watched NIN live and it was immense.
Creedence Clearwater Revival's covers of Suzie Q, I Put a Spell on You and I Heard it Through the Grapevine.
Kevin truee
If I were carpenter. Robert plant..baby please don't go budgie..Johnny b good status quo. I ain't no mountain budgie....hey jo Hendrix.... born to be wild slade....
Not Grapevine. No way.

@@larrygodfrey859 Better than Gladys Knight and Marvin Gayes versions? Wow. There's no accounting for taste.
This Flight Tonight, Nazareth covering Joni Mitchell
NICE CHOICE! Perfection with Dan's gritty vocals.
Diamond Head did that one too
Interestingly, Iron Savior's version takes Narazeth's version and even put it another level higher.

My favorite covers:
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Type O Negative - Black Sabbath
Rage Against The Machine - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Tool - No Quarter
Def Leppard - Action
Anthrax - Antisocial, She (Kiss Cover)
Aerosmith - Come Together
Van Halen - Pretty Woman
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Judas Priest - Diamonds And Rust, Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged-Crown)
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, The Man Who Sold The World, Lake of Fire, Plateau
Metallica - Am I Evil?, The Small Hours, Turn The Page, Astronomy
Led Zeppelin - All of them!
Cash on Hurt. Oh yea.
Lake of Fire is great!
Well I do love Zeppelin but consider LZ II as their first 'proper' L.Z. album. Why because the first is Jimmy and his 'New Yardbirds' doing the best covers album in hard rock history. Only on LZ II do all four effect the result more than just as great musicians. Most of all though Robert Plants equality in LZ II bought us some awesome originals even if, even there, there is a lot of borrowing (which is part of the folk and blues tradition) it is mostly originals there and amazing. This why even today Page needs Plant and not the other way round. I saw Plant last year in Stockholm. A great little gig. His 'Carry, Fire', 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' and 'Ramble on' were awesome.
Come together by Aerosmith sucks.
@@tylerdell1878 Yup. Horrendous.
Molly Hatchet's "Dreams (I'll Never See)" cover of Allman Bros
I respect Hatchet's version but I gotta stick with Gregg.
I can see how someone would dig that version more because its so sped up and heavier from Molly. But yes I've got to go with the original also.
Greatest guitar riff! Very underrated!
I agree not even close.
No no and no.
"Ain't no love in the heart of the city" Whitesnake. Great Cover
Harry Nilsson’s cover of Badfinger’s Without You.
Nilson Schmillson
Yup, it's a phenomenal cover.
Love Hurts, Nazareth cove of a Roy Orbison's classic
Love hurts was written by and first recorded by the every brothers
@@susanrussell3001 they first recorded it but didn't write it
Elton John's versions of Pinball Wizard and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds always blew me away. Not necessarily better, just extremely well interpreted.
No, they are both much better than the originals.
Not for me. I think he butchered Lucy in the Sky. It's too hard to improve on a Beatles song, though Joe Cocker's are the closest I've heard.
totally with you on the Lucy in the sky; Elton's band and their harmonies really shine in this one much better than the Beatles version.
@@leonardobrien No They're Not!
@@hudois Yeah, they are. EJ could do no wrong in '74/75. (Other than the radio playing his songs to death.) Both versions are from this era, and are vastly superior to the Beatles/Who versions. Indeed, the originals sound like b-side rubbish.
Roll Over Beethoven by ELO, because it was a great and new interpretation of the older version.
The very first song I thought of
I agree totally but it has to be the 8 minute album version, not the radio edit!
@@chicagodan1981 Exactly !!
Nazareth's version of the Joni Mitchell song, This Flight Tonight.
Very...very...TRUE!
Woody Guthrie's - 'Vigilante Man' - cover by Nazareth is also great. ruclips.net/video/PDj13ulfT0g/видео.html
You Keep Me Hangin’ On by Vanilla Fudge was a great rework of that song. The Rods also did a take on it similar to V.F. but I like V.F’s version best. Ronnie Montrose did a smokin’ instrumental version of Town Without Pity.
Vanilla Fudge really brought that song to life perfectly after the overly studio production sound of The Supremes' version that mutes its emotional impact. My favorite is Rod's with the extended Bach style organ intro and the piano part way through that helped make it sound more reflective than filled with angst. Only a great song done by VF and Rod S - don't know, can't find the Ronnie Montrose version.
Found the Ronnie Montrose, it's good.
Yeah The Fudge were the cover kings. Just loved VF
Mark, I disagree on your 1st pick (waaaaay too slow IMHO), but I totally agree on your 2nd one.
George Thurogood doing One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer by John Lee Hooker
Was actually written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953.
Lol those black sabbath covers are nothing compared to the originals.
Yeah, there this part of me that thinks--and this is not necessarily logical--that to even say that anyone covered Sabbath better'n Sabbath, is sacrilegious.
metalheads are so far up the ass of metal its gross
*cliche alert*
you CANNOT improve on perfection.
you can change it,rearrange it or even strange it,but better than Sabbath?
behave.
I agree, fucking Godsmack. Seriously?
@@johnr7279 I recently heard a version of Planet Caravan that gave the original a run for the money, but the group (Don’t recall the band name, had a females singer) went for more dreamy sound.
Can’t believe Twist and Shout wasn’t mentioned. The sheer energy of that is astounding, incredible track. The best cover the Beatles ever did.
The Beatles - You Really Got a Hold on Me is magic for me. Twist and Shout is GREAT too.
@@dianamcdougall9251 I was lucky to enjoy Beatlemania and love Twist And Shout, but it's just like LaBamba. I like them both.
The WHO - Young Man Blues
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
YES - America
METALLICA - The Prince
ANTHRAX - Parasite
E.L.P. - Pictures At An Exhibition
QUEENSRYCHE - Scarborough Fair
Iron Maiden - Crossed Eye Mary
Judas Priest - Green Manalishi
There are more, but this is what comes to mind immediately \m/
I absolutely love ELP, not sure if I'd consider their interpretations of classical music covers, but nice taste nonetheless
Good choices. Anthrax also did a really good version of sabbath bloody sabbath but I admit I like the original better. Parasite was killer and Geoff Tate killed in Scarborough fair.
Maybe I am old but I don't like any of the bands these two other guys are mentioning.
No, age has nothing to do with that, those are some lame bands.
I looked the covers as I watched and yeah, those bands covers did suck, and yeah, pretty lame bands too.
These dudes have AWFUL taste. How in the blue hell can ANY Sabbath cover be better for starters? Ok, I'm about to throw up, he said Smashing Pumpkins covered Fleetwood Mac better, maybe I will unsub! I guess I'm just getting old or something.
what's with old dudes having to insult anyone who doesn't have the same taste as them
Jeff Healey.
Yer Blues, Angel, Evil, As The Years Go Passing By, Badge, Me And My Crazy Self.
Simply brilliant and he made them his own.
Every cover he did was amazing. That whole Cover to Cover album just smokes!
Aerosmith 'Train kept a rollin!! Everyone forgets it's a cover.

First that came to my mind is WASP's version of The Real Me by The Who. The Original is great but the WASP version is just phenomenal. And the funny story is when WASP's drummer at the time Frankie Banali (RIP) was laying down his drum tracks The Real Me was the last song to do. He drank a bottle of whiskey on one sip before the take and said that this has to be THE TAKE. He nailed it and I think the drum track is the thing what makes the cover so energetic and fun.
GUN's cover of Cameo's WORD UP - how to successfully transform an annoying funk/hip hop record into a dynamic and uplifting hard rock classic.
With a Little Help From My Friends doesn't belong on Pepper? Seriously?.....The way Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band breaks into With a Little Help From My Friends is one of the most magical parts of the album. All Along the Watch Tower and Blinded by the Light are probably the best covers ever. I'd like to see a part 2 of this. But, maybe with just Pete.
Totally agree, the shows that Pete has these 2 brothers on are low points, gotta bite my tongue. It's very hard to make it through the episode. They seem to not be too well prepared and some of the statements they make are incorrect or just ridiculous.
@@johnbenard9550 Yeah....those guys kinda of drag the shows. Pete has a winning personality and I prefer when he goes solo.
Please do a part 2 Pete. Yes’ version of Every Little Thing by The Beatles from the debut of Yes is astonishing.

Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends
Johnny Cash - Hurt

Cheap Trick - California Man (The Move)
Sun Arise - Alice Cooper (Rolf Harris)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Peter Gabriel - The Power Of The Heart (Lou Reed)
Elvis Costello - (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding (Nick Lowe)
William Shatner - Mr. Tambourine Man (Bob Dylan)
The Jeff Buckley pick - nice.
Godsmack and White Zombie versions of Sweet Leaf and Children of the grave over the originals? Where did you find these millennials Pete? lol
Green Manalishi - Judas Priest. Messiah Will Come Again - Gary Moore. People Get Ready - Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart.
I loled when yall were discussing the Deep Purple cover of Hush. I agree that nobody needs to worry about the original, Deep Purple took that ball and ran over the moon with it.
Kula Shaker's version is pretty good as well.
April Wine did lots of covers, Lorence Hud - another Canadian, Could've Been A Lady (Hot Chocolate), Bad Side Of the Moon (Elton John) to mention a few.
Regarding "Dazed and Confused," it took only 4 decades and the threat of a lawsuit before Jimmy Page would even grudgingly acknowledge that the song was at least "inspired" by the Jake Holmes original.
Because apart from the bass progression and vocal melody its completely different. Its a starting point for instrumental passages. LZ changed all the lyrics except for the title. And most of the LZ version is a workout for Page’s riffing, bowing and soloing.
Forgot to mention also because Holmes allowed the Yardbirds to play the song (when Page was in the band they played it when Jake Holmes was on tour with them in 1968. So something more to that story).
@@jimmycampbell78
Merely changing the arrangement of a song and altering some of its lyrics does not exempt someone from a legitimate copyright infringement claim. Despite the fact that various original members of the Yardbirds have always readily acknowledged the fact that they together with Page had borrowed and slightly reworked the song "I'm Confused" from Jake Holmes for their own setlist, in an early 1970's print interview (Melody Maker, if I recall correctly) Page had the brazen audacity to deny that there was any connection at all between Holmes' original song and the one by Led Zeppelin. So awkward was Page's effort at deflection and prevarication during this interview that any perceptive reader could probably sense the Led Zeppelin guitarist literally squirming in his hot seat as he was questioned directly about the origin of the song. Then in 1980, Holmes himself personally wrote to Page in an attempt to resolve the legalities of the matter, but Page chose to ignore him completely until actual lawyers got actively involved years later when the entire Led Zeppelin music catalogue was being remastered and subjected to copyright renewal. The impulse to defend and to worship at the altar of a musician idol should not blind any of the loyal fanboys to the ugly reality that blatent plagiarism does indeed sometimes occur in the music industry. Page should have simply fessed up and done the right thing at the start of this controversy.
@@Daniel-415-Ponce What I'm saying in my second comment is that it's possible Holmes sold or allowed the Yardbirds to use the song. He was touring with the Yardbirds during their 1968 US tour, he was one of their opening acts so he was obviously well aware of the Yardbirds performing their version of Dazed and Confused. This was before Led Zeppelin existed and no one knew how big that band would become. So later Holmes may have wanted a bit more money. From an artistic point of view, the Led Zeppelin version bears little resemblance to the Holmes original. Page created entire new instrumental passages and solos for the song so as an artist, he wanted to lay claim to that. I appreciate you're giving me the legal perspective. I would just, rather than a fanboy, make an artistic case for Page transforming the song and making it something successful. Had he not done so, the song would have been forgotten like the rest of Jake Holmes' music. I doubt yourself or any of the Led Zeppelin "look, plagiarism!" brigade could name another Jake Holmes song without having to look it up. I don't think anyone would be interested in Jake Holmes without the Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin connection. Do you think they would be? How many albums by obscure 1960s folk artists/advertising jingle songwriters do you own? I thought Pete Pardo covered this perfectly in the video.
'Inspired' translated accurately is 'blatantly ripped off', to be accurate. The Yardbirds had Jake Holmes backing them up and they (Yardbirds) played it in their sets before he ever formed LZ.

The original version of “Diamonds and Rust” by Joan Baez is beautiful, I never liked Judas Priest, their music does nothing for me at all, same for KISS. Lenny Kravitz’s version of “American Woman” is lame. How could you not know “Hard To Handle” is an Otis Redding song? That’s one of his best songs. That Kittie version of “Run Like Hell” is terrible. It’s one of the few great songs on The Wall.
Lenny Kravitz´s American Woman is not as bad as many people think. However, The Guess Who original is way better.
Thanks for your comments. I agree with you word for word. I love Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez.

I think this episode kinda rambled too much for me. And too many entries were "Cover of song by is great -- but then the original was great -- and now I'm not sure if the cover is all that much better than the original". All of this waffling around made it seem like the lists were written about 15 minutes before the show. Usually I listen to one of these videos and pick up several songs that I want to check out. In this one, the only thing I'm going to check out is Gary Moore's cover of "Shapes of Things".
Several "name" artists have done full albums of cover songs. I'd suggest "Feedback" by Rush for a number of great, energetic covers.
Suggestion of a great cover: Jeff Beck doing "A Day in the Life".
Another suggestion, although fewer might agree with me: Aerosmith doing "Come Together".
And I suspect that if you tried, you could easily do a full episode on cover songs that were better than the original, where all the originals were songs by Bob Dylan. A lot of people have done great covers of his songs. (disclaimer: I'm a pretty big fan of Bob, but it's still true that many great covers have been done).
Totally agree, the shows that Pete has these 2 brothers on are low points. Gotta bite my tongue, and it's very hard to make it through the episode. They seem to not be too well prepared and some of the statements they make are incorrect or just ridiculous. I cringe while watching every episode they host on Pete's channel, I honestly do not understand why he has them on the show, of all the guests Pete has, they are definitely the worst. Truthfully there are quite a few others that feel this way also if you read some of the posts on the episodes Craig and George are on.
William Shatner: Rocket Man. And Limp Biscuit has never done a good cover of their own songs. Also, don't get me started with Five Fingered Death Punch. Turn off your radio and look for some real rock and metal.
Kevin Brown The Shatner spoken word album! Is it tongue in cheek, or serious? 😁
Lame Bizkshit´s rendition to The Who´s Behind Blue Eyes is atrocious. They should have never had done this song, when they knew it would be a total disaster.
William Shatner's Rocket Man is pretty funny alright.
Shapes of Things - Gary Moore (Yardbirds)
Pinball Wizard - Elton John (The Who)
First Cut is the Deepest - Rod Stewart (Cat Stevens)
Walkin' the Dog - Ratt (Aerosmith)
Diamonds and Rust - Judas Priest (Joan Baez)
All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix (Bob Dylan)
The original studio version of Landslide really can't be topped, and while Stevie Nicks has her limitations vocally, her vocals on that song was fabulous. Amazing guitars as well.
Faith no mores version of the commodores “I’m easy”. Not many rock/metal singers could pull of Lionel Ritchie and not have it seem like a goof or even sound good. Also may not be better but voivods astronomy Domine was awesome
They also did their cover of I've Started A Joke justice.
@ never heard it but I would love to. I’ll have to look that one up.
@@freaky_j2207 You won't be disappointed! They made a video for it (which is on here) and was included on their last album, Album of the Year. Some trivia: they'd already effectively disbanded by the time of this single, so that's why no band members appear in this video.
Uh, no.

Best Cover LP of ALL Time. LED ZEPPELIN I. The first real LP by Led Zeppelin the band together was Led Zeppelin II. While 'I' was rather Jimmy doing covers with his new superior 'New Yardbirds' musicians. Most of the LP is covers or rip off but all improved! Obviously agree with Hendrix's version of 'All the Long Watchtower' being amazing. Everyone loves hating Limb Biscuit but their take on the 'Mission Impossible' was real good. I think even if someone is not generally good, every song should be taken on it's own. Nirvana and Guns and Roses are now under rated when before they were over hyped. Both bands were important, clearly better than average and have SOME truly GREAT tunes.
Yngwie doing Mistreated was amazing. I know people think he plays with no heart, but there's so much feeling on this one

If you don’t understand Dylan at this point like Pete says, you never will. Dylan is brilliant.
@@sspbrazil Really? Maybe as a 'poet', definitely not for his musical production prowess.
@@dianamcdougall9251 on the contrary, he became a fantastic producer of music and choosing great musicians to be in his bands, he can play both piano and guitar as well as sing, play harmonica and remember lyrics to all his songs without the use of a teleprompter, he has always been very spontaneous when recording and performing, ing live too, that’s a sign of a good musician, he’s also adapted his music to his aging voice, his latest album which was released in the fall is brilliant. Best cover is "Delilah" from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
Good shout
Pete is regretting inviting these guys when they drop names like Godsmack and Limp Bizkit.
Flotsam & Jetsam's cover of Elton John's 'Saturday Night Is Alright For Fighting', takes a good song & makes it a thrash classic.
I like all of Fu Manchu's covers better than the originals just because I'm such a huge Fu Manchu fan - "Godzilla" (BOC), "Slow Ride" (Foghat), "Moving in Stereo" (Cars)... okay, maybe I like Thin Lizzy's version of "Jailbreak" better but I still enjoy hearing FM do it...
Pantera - Planet Caravan
Pantera - Cat Scratch Fever
1. Beggars Opera - McArthur park
2. Eric Burdon Band- Don't let me be misunderstood
3. Manfred Mann
Spirits in the night
4. Frank Marino-
All along the watchtower
5. Edgar winters white trash - Tobacco Road
6. Buddy miles - down by the river

9. Butterfield Blues band- work song
10. Canned Heat & John Lee hooker- boogie chillin
11. Outlaws - ghost riders in the sky
12. Led Zeppelin - dazed & confused
So far my fave is David Bowie's version of "Wild is the Wind", just a matter of taste, nothing objective here (although I believe that right and wrong exists in music for sure, otherwise no one would ever have to practice and rehearse to start with).
1. Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann
2. I Don't Need No Doctor - Humble Pie
3. Dreams I'll Never See - Molly Hatchet
4. You Really Got Me - Van Halen
5. Stone- Axel Rudi Pell
6. Ride Like The Wind - Saxon
7. Green Manilishi - Judas Priest
8. Diamonds and Rust - Judas Priest
9. Ain't No Love In The Heart of The City - Whitesnake
10. Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer
No offence but I think wolverine guy should stick with comics. Although I know music is subjective the title reads cover songs that are better than the originals. Mettallica whiskey in the jar better than lizzys no way.
Jeez, your guests need a beating. Better versions than Sabbath? Limp Bizkit, Billy Corgan, Lenny Kravitz? Come on.
Correct.
Faith No More's cover of I started a joke by the Bee Gees
Maybe not...
Just about any Russ Ballard song recorded by any other band. Kiss god made rock n roll to you, Santana winning, Ace Frehley New York groove, Rainbow, since you’ve been gone and I surrender. Samson Riding with the angels. The list goes on.
Wow. No Blood, Sweat & Tears? And When I Die, Smiling Phases, God Bless The Child (and those are all on just one album).
1. 'Boys of Summer' by The Ataris (Don Henley), 2. 'Word Up' by Gun (Cameo), 3. 'Gimme Shelter' by Thunder (Stones), 4. 'Got the Time' by Anthrax (Joe Jackson), 5. 'Listen to Your Heart' by Through Fire (Roxette), 6. 'Angel of Death' by Rick Astley (Slayer).
One of these may not actually exist, but it would be great if it did.
Girlschool and their version of Race With The Devil is sometimes better than the original with, Gun.
How about Leader of the band or Fox on the Run?
Discovering the original Billy Joe Royal version of Hush as a result of this video has changed my life. It is brilliant
TERRY KATH!!! no, you need not say more. :)
I want to hear a cover of "Free Form Guitar"
@@JohnSmith-mx8wp as you wish! #pleasestandby
Three come to mind for me :
- America - Yes covering Simon and Garfunkel
- She's Not There - Santana covering The Zombies
- Spooky - Atlanta Rhthym Section covering Classics IV
I totally agree with you on Bob Dylan. He's a great songwriter, but I can't stand his voice
Total Agree as well as with all of us!
I can stand his voice on 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' - it seems to fit well with the western theme for which it's written. ruclips.net/video/rm9coqlk8fY/видео.html
I do so agree! Consequently, every cover is better than the original!
@@ozuidema You got that right! Especially when it comes to Bob Dylan songs.
I like Dylan's voice, how can we imagine it being any different? lol
As for "Knockin on Heaven's Door", the Guns n Roses version is for me the WORST cover ever recorded.
The Worst That Could Happen. Without You. Love Hurts. With a Little Help From My Friends. Red Red Wine, Summertime Blues. Parchman Farm. Half of Zeppelin's songs, though they took credit for them.
Achillies Last Stand Dream Theater version Smokes the Zeppelin version!
Nope, prefer Bonham’s drumming and the haunting echoey layered guitars on the LZ version.
Govt Mule - Don’t Step On the Grass Sam
Nazareth- This Flight Toningt
Metallica-Turn the Page
Judas Priest- Diamonds and Rust/Better By You, Better Than Me
Aerosmith - Come Together
Tori Amos- Smells Like Teen Spirit
Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley
All Along The Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
Voodoo Chile - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Because the Night- Patti Smith
When the Levee Breaks- Led Zeppelin
Sweet Jane - The Cowboy Junkies
"Blinded By The Light"- Manfred Mann's Earth Band's cover of a Bruce Springsteen tune...it's "way" better than the original version...
It's almost worth listening just to hear when Pete gets laughin'. Contageous, man!!
I used to feel the same about Dylan. Not anymore. I love his early stuff particularly.
Back before his voice became indistinguishable. These days, he sounds like gibberish to me.
I love Bowie... But Saigon Kick did a out of this world cover of "Space Oddity"
It's just beyond the original in my opinion. Hell, that whole album "Water" is so damn slept on. My favorite Saigon Kick album by far. Songs like "Torture" "Fields Of Rape" "One Step Closer" "I Love You" "Sgt. Steve" "On And On" "The Way" "Sentimental Girl" "Close To You" "Reprise" and of course "Space Oddity"
It's got so much going on. Metal. Soul. Sadness. Progressive. Funk. Psychedelic. Atmospheric. Craziness.
I just never understood why this album got so overlooked. Maybe it was just too much for some to take in. Who knows.
Van Halen Where have all the good times gone
awesome riff for King Edward to groove on! Great pick!
Can’t believe he said Stevie Nicks’ Landslide was nasally and worse than Billy Corgan. I love Billy but his voice is the definition of nasally singing.
Dreams I'll never see - Molly Hatchet Alabama song - The Doors immediately come to mind; Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann so many more. I will listen now.
Bad Side Of The Moon by April Wine is an Elton John song. Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers takes Stevie Wonder’s song to a new level.
I absolutely love Higher Ground (both the RHCP cover and the Stevie Wonder original). The difference is that RHCP did a heavier punk metal-like performance, which, like you said before, took that song to a new different level.
