      Walter: That's a good point. Peart and Lee get more plaudits than Lifeson. More competition with guitarists, probably.

    5 guitarists that just take my breath away in no particular order: Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Danny Gatton, Paco de Lucia. All genius and astounding in their particular fields.

    Paul Gilbert has become an absolute favorite of mine over the last decade. When he picks up a guitar he’s like a kid with a new toy. So much joy and emotion come from him and it gets me excited for what he plays. He has such passion for what he does.

      When Paul Rodgers was interviewed one time, he was asked an interesting question. Given that he'd worked with so many great guitarists, (Paul Kossoff, Mick Ralphs, Jimmy Page...)
      who did he think was the best ? He said Paul Kossoff, hands down.

    1 - Ace Frehley (Nowhere near the best or technical but he is one of the most iconic. Been a huge fan since I was a kid)
    2 - Eddie Van Halen
    3 - Jimmy Page
    4 - Eric Clapton
    5 - Kirk Hammett
    6 - Tony Iommi
    7 - Angus Young
    8 - Chuck Berry
    9 - B B King
    10 - Brian May

    Thanks for mentioning him. I was hoping you would. I grew up with boc concerts back in high school and he was always really really really amazing. They are one amazing. Band with the V guitar lineup in the guitar ✝

      exactly what i was thinking. he could go completely batshit crazy on guitar and it would still sound good. same way i feel about kurt cobain. some people just have a gift for making a mess sound beautiful.

      Oh man!! When I listen to songs like Cortez the Killer, Down by the River, Cinnamon girl Etc…. Nobody else sounds like that. It sounds like Neil & his guitar are locked in an epic battle to the death……A beautiful battle to the death.

      I love Angus, too! But I understand Pete didn't put him on his list because he mostly had his eye on if the guitarist is a great composer also. So that would even more be Malcolm instead. But Pete doesn't see AC/DC as a very much important band for the evolution of music, as I understand...
      And I see most guitarists here stand alone in their band without a second player doing the rhythm only.
      Perhaps Pete should do also a video about the greatest guitar playing pairs sometimes!

    Nice to see both Martin Barre and Alex Lifeson getting in on the list. Both usually are overlooked because there are so many amazing guitarists. And also because of the respective bands the two of them were in which featured some other amazing musicians/personalities.

      This is his list, not your list, they would be on my list, so would Scott Henderson, Jimmy Herring, Dave Mustaine, Zakk Wylde, Derek Trucks and Sonny Landreth, but like I said: it's all subjective, there is no wrong list.

      Ryan: I was three feet from Joe in 1982 during his solo career (Richie's 3-D, Kenner, LA., Sept. 1982).
      SUPREMELY DISAPPOINTED.
      I didn't realize at the time that Brad Whitford is the ace guitarist in Aerosmith.

      I hear you there man, Kerry King from Slayer said that Glenn Tipton is the most underrated guitarist of all time and it just pisses me off how he gets overlooked all the time. Maybe it is the twin guitar attack of Judas Priest as to why but he's still my favourite.

      Rik's (triumph) US festival performance was crazy good. He Was always better live than studio. Shreds and sung like a bird too.

      Yes, Rik Emmett is definitely one of the most underrated guitarist out there. Solo from "Rock and Roll Machine,"(1977) was way ahead of its time. Van Halen I,(1978). Plus his versatility as an accomplished acoustic guitarist catapults him above the rest. ex. "Blinding Light Show/ Moonchild," "Midsummer's Daydream."

    JIMMY PAGE-put simply, he is the tastiest player, so many genius, ear candy type riffs, his compositional skills and production wizardry in the studio is without peer! The combination of heaviness while never sacrificing melody......Jimmy Page's guitar playing is the sound of cool! Hey Jimmy, how's about picking up the axe again and making some NOISE!

    The guitar from Megalomania on Sabotage: Mind bending. The front part's slow but Iommi slays us with one of the greatest guitar riffs in the history of the world.

    That was a great list! Of course, any best guitarist list is totally subjective and varies according to personal taste. For me, everyone who knows me knows that my favorite guitarist is Jerry Garcia, hands down. But, as a guitarist, over the past few years there are 3 players who have had my attention and totally influenced my approach to the instrument: Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, and Peter Green. They continue to expand my horizons exponentially, showing me possiblities I hadn't even imagined.

    Blackmore and Iomi the best riff writers of all time... Brain May played the guitar like an orchestra.....
    Watched an interview when Brian May stated that Ritchie Blackmore never got his due....he said that his playing was second to none....

    Someone who is always overlooked is Danny Kirwan from early Fleetwood Mac. He was simply masterful and amazing and had a vibrato and tone that was surreal. Sadly, he broke down mentally and basically disappeared after the mid 70's and died obscurely. But what he did musically was monumental and unmatched - and he played with and tutored under Peter Green.

    And yes, he's not the fastest player or technically the best in the business but there's something about him...I can't explain what it is but he's my number one
