I worked in Taiwan for 2 years and with the military. Taiwanese ARE independent from China. The Taiwanese cultures seemed the same as Chinese to me, an American; when I had arrived. After living there for a while, I quickly realized the differences and I stand with Taiwan > China.

I have lived here for ten years now and have learned a lot. Taiwan has to be one of the best run countries I have even been too. Highways as good as anyplace in the world. National Health, at low cost. But equivalent to the best America has to offer. Crime is very low. The people are as friendly as you will find anyplace on earth, they will go out of their way to help a stranger or foreigner. @Mika Lee my advise to read the book " Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang " this book about her (Jung Chang) life story, her mother and grand mother from 1870 to 1978. this book will open the eyes of human being on how China evolves and the greediness of political system of China. But right after WWII, the communism Soviet Union funded and helped Chinese communists to wage another civil war against the corrupt "Republic of China" government who had just been seriously wearied from WWII, and then later captured the so-called "Mainland China" area as part of the integrated Red Communism Society world in 1949. The "Republic of China" government fled to Taiwan and keep against the "People Republic of China" till now. Wars of Korea and Vietnam were followed in 1950 and 1955. Although the bloody red communism China (known as the "People Republic of China" -- a country that has never been republic for a day) claims that they own Taiwan Island, in fact they have never occupied Taiwan for a single second. Therefore a government must be organized so that full participation of people must be ensured to avoid oppression. It's only democracy which gives the required freedom. So far as the Taiwan is concerned, it's situated within well defined boundaries and unwilling to join a non-democratic government, its people must be given freedom to decide whether they have to accept One China Policy or not. Without the consent of people imposing "One China Policy" is nothing but to push a large population into undesirable political crises which don't formulate a rightful decision.

I was hearing about the sea islands that they've been taking lately, that belong to some countries, but they even started military bases there with no permission or declaration. This thing has upset the US, too. By now I got a shady assumption on the behavior of mainland china so far. I just want to list my accusations: bad resource distributions, bad environmental measurements worsening pollution and economy, bad control in politics and loyalty, communism, history of famine and inequality, reputation of low pay and hardship, censorship and no freedom of speech or democracy.
Evil in the world is only driven by money gain. So here they're doing it by controlling a large population controlling the laws that benefit and shift money to their leaders only. These desperate behaviors of their leaders to remain in power must be for that reason. I don't know anything about china's politics or who their leaders are, but that's very sad and pathetic. Humans deserve better lives. The ones who support those wrong ideals forgot that they don't live forever. They have weak hearts because they can't love, and weak brains because they can't think, and coward spirits because they support injustice and don't speak against it.

I have lived here for ten years now and have learned a lot. Taiwan has to be one of the best run countries I have even been too. Highways as good as anyplace in the world. National Health, at low cost. But equivalent to the best America has to offer. Crime is very low. The people are as friendly as you will find anyplace on earth, they will go out of their way to help a stranger or foreigner. I wish it was like this everywhere, there would be no world problems if it were.

The though of nation identity of majority of Taiwanese has changed greatly in the past decade in Taiwan. In 2015, about 2/3 of Taiwanese consider themselves as "Taiwanese", rather than "Chinese". Only about 1/10 of people in Taiwan consider themselves as "Chinese", those of whom are elders fleeing from China in 1940s, and pro reunification with China now.
I, as the 19th generations in Taiwan, do not consider myself as Chinese. Yes, I have to admit that my oldest ancestors were from Mainland China 400+ years ago, and some of them married with those aboriginals in Taiwan. At most I can accept to be called as "Chinese Taiwanese", just similar to those who are called "African American" in America. Calling me "Chinese" is not acceptable!
I need to briefly clarify the complicated history of Taiwan.
There were eras that this Taiwan Island was colonized and governed by Spain, Holland, Ming and Qing dynasties of China, Japan, and the latest governed by those fled Chinese. People from different countries had lived in this island for a long time, and their descendants had already been here for generations as well.
Taiwan was captured from Japan in the mid-20th Century by "Republic of China", the China who cooperated with USA fighting against Japan in WWII, the one of the five original founding members of United Nations, and the long-term friend of western democracy countries against Red Communism Society. But right after WWII, the communism Soviet Union funded and helped Chinese communists to wage another civil war against the corrupt "Republic of China" government who had just been seriously wearied from WWII, and then later captured the so-called "Mainland China" area as part of the integrated Red Communism Society world in 1949. The "Republic of China" government fled to Taiwan and keep against the "People Republic of China" till now. Wars of Korea and Vietnam were followed in 1950 and 1955.
Although the bloody red communism China (known as the "People Republic of China" -- a country that has never been republic for a day) claims that they own Taiwan Island, in fact they have never occupied Taiwan for a single second. The "People Republic of China" has been tried all kinds of measures to exterminate the existence of "Republic of China" in Taiwan since 1949.
Unlike the red communism China, democracy in Taiwan has been practiced for decades, and people have the freedom and rights of speech and elections, just like in US. But the corrupt Chinese political party fled from China now cooperates with the red communism China and tries to convince Taiwanese to accept and reunify with the red communism China, which actually irritates the majority of Taiwan people.
The benefit of democracy elections in Taiwan allows us to choose the future development path of ourselves, as well as our nation identity. In 2016 there will be a Presidential Election taken place in Taiwan, and the corrupt "Republic of China" government is doomed to lose their regime for the second times.
Since lesser Taiwanese agree on reunification with China nowadays, the nation name "Republic of China" might completely vanish from the Earth in the next two decades. Maybe "People Republic of China" does not need to lay a hand on "Republic of China" in Taiwan, since we Taiwanese will vote for terminating the corrupt "Republic of China" in the future.

Therefore a government must be organized so that full participation of people must be ensured to avoid oppression. It's only democracy which gives the required freedom. So far as the Taiwan is concerned, it's situated within well defined boundaries and unwilling to join a non-democratic government, its people must be given freedom to decide whether they have to accept One China Policy or not. Without the consent of people imposing "One China Policy" is nothing but to push a large population into undesirable political crises which don't formulate a rightful decision.
