China may trade with, aid (and influence/deliver propaganda to win favor) other nations (see African countries today), but traditionally, it does not "take over" in the conventional sense. Now obviously, some degree of conquest was required when the various isolated independent warring states came together to form the empire millennia ago (see Qin Dynasty). However, the more peripheral aspects of its land mass have come about either as a result of China itself being conquered (see Manchuria and inner Mongolia) or come about during the period when those conquering outside forces ruled (see Xinjiang and Tibet). Apart from feelings of reclaiming what they believe is historically theirs and seized away by foreign enemies during a period of historical weakness (which occurred coincidentally during foreign Manchu rule), conquest is not really a big part of the Chinese psyche. Thank you I enjoyed the reporting very much. I was born in Taiwan to parents from the mainland, although we've immigrated to the US since I was 7. Taiwan is in a difficult place. Continue the military and diplomacy. Despite the unequal balance in power, a robust military can still put up enough deterrence so that a physical take over is not the easiest option for the PLA. Diplomacy is two part. One to strengthen Taiwan's tie with important allies (especially the USA) and the other to avoid directly provoking the mainland. A third approach is simply economic. Do everything to improve the economic lots of the typical Taiwanese. For example, every student should have a working knowledge of English (or other important languages like French, German, Spanish, Japanese) so they can compete in the global labor market. This also blunts disinformation by the mainland if folks access western media directly, where mainland influence is weaker. Teach as many as possible management, financial, and negotiation skills. Be fluent in the ways of foreign laws, especially common laws practiced in Anglophone countries. Achieve deeper professionalism. For example, be a program architect, not just a coder; a financial controller, not just an accountant; or a scientist, not just a tech assistant. Fourth, continue to nurture a common Taiwanese culture within the larger Chinese context. For example, there's a distinct SF and LA culture that is largely resilient to the larger American culture, now dominated by Trump and the GOP. Likewise each of the Anglophone country has its own unifying culture despite having descended from the UK. "Taiwanese" culture doesn't have to exclude "Chinese" culture. Military and diplomacy can help Taiwan reach the most favorable compromise with the mainland. At a minimum, it buys time until perhaps when the mainland is less authoritarian. Economics sustains the military and diplomatic efforts. And should the day come that Taiwan is absorbed into the mainland, people have the means to emigrate if they so choose. Finally, a Taiwan culture means that "Taiwan" in some form can still survive, both in the people that are forcibly reunified and in the Taiwan diaspora outside the physical island.
Emigrate to where? I wish the west would stop being the relief valve for people facing authoritarian rule. People should stand and fight for their homeland. If they flee, they never deserved freedom. Otherwise, we're all just making silly youtube comments...which I guess is okay. But seriously, imperialism is not really what China is famous for (a definition Taiwan, China, and Australia, as well as the rest of the world, should be very familiar with given their relatively recent experiences with true western imperialism)... You can tell the difference ! wot happen if you are going to raise a Taiwan flag in Tiananmen Square ?
first of all? what is a Taiwan flag?
@@funnycnn Red field, dark blue canton and a white sun in the canton.
@@JamesDavy2009 That's the flag of the Republic of China, not Taiwan flag. As long as taiwanese deem themselves as citizens of ROC, it's totally fine, but if they ask for independence, then there is war.
You can just do a simple google search to see how many Taiwan tourists waving that flag on the square. There're more in Nanjing.
@@JamesDavy2009 are you sure that's not former Chinese flag?
Thank you ABC for such an amazing episode covering this topic!!!
Has it not resisted Chinese power and influence from 1946?
a lot of shit happened, since 1949. Taiwan would have been taken then if the Americans hadn't interfered.
You should ask the USA government about this
Actually, the USA forced Taiwan to scrap its nuclear program, otherwise we wouldn't have to worry about China right now.
@@wowyzaoy maybe we should look up the years before 1949? President Truman basically watch the communists take over China, probably with a certain point of satisfaction? since he hated Chiang kai shek and his gang so much.
when he finally realized he should had helped Chiang's regime instead of economic and military embargo, was when the korean war started. aiding Taiwan wasn't even the main purpose, but to block the spreading of communism was hard enough already...China was too big to block.

I think most people in the world living under an authoritarian regime believes that US democracy was gifted to Americans. A dangerous precedence is being set in the west by giving asylum to people living under an oppressive regimes. The refugees should stay in their country and fight. Blood has to be shed to obtain democratic rule, sometimes a lot of bloodshed. It makes sense that Germany would give refuge to 1 million Syrians since Germany did not have to fight for their democracy. HK can get their freedom back if they want it but they are ruled by their pocketbooks so they don't deserve it.
In the age of nuclear weapons Franklins advice does not hold up. When liberty and public safety cross swords, safety wins every time. It would be foolish to try to stop China militarily.
You got to love the Taiwanese
This how the WW3 started ok guys
Taiwan Will ALWAYS Be Free!
Very pleased that some young Taiwanese are brave to fight Chinese with rock!

@Dragon Lee Taiwan is still fine without China
@Dragon Lee LOL - nonsense.
@Dragon Lee LOL - peasant.
Dragon Lee exactly.. the businessmen of Taiwan and Hong Kong know how much China helps their country from an economic sense and the western media dares to divide a country’s family matters further.
@@ecofriendly0 LOL family. Tribal nationalists. Taiwan and Hong Kong HATE your "family". Stop lying. No one here is from the west. We are all in Asia. And all of us think your country is a disgusting exploiter of the Chinese underclasses and a revolting user and thief of other nations's wealth.
Taiwan and Hong Kong must always be FREE!!!!!!!! DB
There's a special place reserved in hell for dictators.
My support goes to Taiwan.
Long term the question is can China resist Taiwan? Their economy works, the Mainland's does not.
Older peoples of both Taiwan and Hong Kong want peace.
But younger peoples of both Taiwan and Hong Kong don’t want to unify
young ones are stupid with no education
I've wondered about that. I'd love to see interviews of people who side with China, perhaps out of nostalgia for the idea of One China or for sentiment that favors Communism. After all, many people have not benefited from this new economy and they struggle to make it everyday in HK. So, Capitalism doesn't appeal to everyone. Time will tell, if China allows this to draw out.
GaslitWorld f. Melissa B Different cases in HK and Taiwan. HK is controlled by real estate tycoons which essentially killed its innovative sectors (check out the first executive’s HK plan to build an IT industry back in 1998) but HK tycoons and people rejected and decided to continue to embrace real estate and finance. Housing prices got crazy high and young people have no future. Taiwan is just muddled by its own political environment, economy hasn’t really improved for 20 years (new graduate pay is less than 1990). Every single party just play the media and anti-China game to get elected. Once elected they just spend a bunch of money buying outdated military equipment and become corrupted (check out the recent cigarette smuggling case).
Speaking as a young person in Taiwan, it's not that we don't want peace, just not at the cost of our freedom.
Besides, reunification doesn't necessarily mean peace. With China's human rights record, who's to say unification won't lead to Taiwan turning into another Tibet or Xinjiang?
@@crochetfangirl1996 Taiwan will be the next Hong Kong. It is impossible to be the next Tibet or Xinjiang because Taiwanese are also Han

@@yinqiaomu ‘just the same as’. Scotland just had its independence referendum in 2014 but do you Chinazis dare to give the people of Hong Kong one?

@@strumdo2727The Catalan leaders were arrested when they declared independence in October 2017 and the Spanish government claimed the movement was illegal , yet no one knows if the result was valid or not. The Catalan elections were held on 21 December and parties supporting independence again won a majority. 5 more Catalan ministers were jailed after the election. I wonder why no one is sympathetic to the Catalans.
If someone dares to waves aTaiwan flag in Beijing's they may end up in " labor camp " and that the differences.
Le Minh Republic of China flag is OK, but people waving Taiwan island flag will be arrested. Just like if you wave confederate flag in a black community, you will be beaten. Or in any major city in US, cops definitely will give you trouble.
Yifan Wang not even close. You could not be more wrong. If someone waved a Confederate States of America flag any where in the USA, there would be absolutely no interference from any government entity, such as police. Where as in China, if some one waved a Taiwanese Republic of China Flag, you would be persecuted by the government and deprived of any civil or human rights.

@@Zergcerebrates Its technology production and heavy affiliation with the western world to start with, why do you think want to bring them back into the fold. If this wasn't the case China wouldn't even give them a second thought as they are strong in their own right.

William Fang, your lousy parents did not educate you well. Taiwan is a different province from Fijian, Canton province, that is the difference.
Emigrate to where? I wish the west would stop being the relief valve for people facing authoritarian rule. People should stand and fight for their homeland. If they flee, they never deserved freedom. Taiwan has a population of 23 M. If it comes to military conflict and the CCP is forced to kill off 10 M the backlash from the rest of the world would be relentless and 13M Taiwanese will have freedom.
