Spent 18 months in Taiwan during the VietNam War. I fell in love with the People and was impressed by their desire for independence from Communist China. Even though I am old, I may still go there and do what I can if hostilities break out. God Bless Taiwan, God bless Hong Kong !

The whole world stands with free and democratic Taiwan. China is unnecessarily bullying Taiwan. Even Tibet is also forcefully annexed by China. There are 1.8 Million Tibetans living outside Tibet in various countries because of Chinese threats. Dalai Lama is living in India with his 1000s of followers since last 40 years. This is high headedness of China which should be crushed. Shame Shame on China.

Australia has that little will and effort, that 70 million is lost per year in South Australia just from toxoplasmosis in sheep... i do not want to think of the value of loss when i consider other states and other livestock... the value must be hundreds of billions of dollars... and there is no novel legislation, no act of parliament... yet we expect people to invest here!, a land of promise and dreams... cant even collectively, as a society and a community, we cant even look after our kids... and the only real rights we have as Australian's, is the right to remain silent and the right to representation before a court of law

The case of Taiwan is that it was part of China in the past, until being wrested away by the Japanese during the first Sino-Japanese War (where Japan attacked China, and of course would later do so again in WWII - that's right the Japanese are not just friendly anime, Nintendo makers), and then briefly came again under Chinese rule during the KMT until the communists kicked them out in the 1950s. It was the period after the 1950s that has really made things complicated to present day.

@@sirmiles1820 Yep, definitely one or the other - since I live in a western nation of free thinkers, it must be the lead in the water I drink because there cannot be any propaganda outside of the PRC. All joking aside, because this video is full of it from multiple sides (shit and propaganda), rather than just making an essentially random unsubstantiated statement, you may consider going ahead and putting forth links to reliable references to counter my statement and put me in my lowly place. Otherwise, we're all just making silly youtube comments...which I guess is okay. But seriously, imperialism is not really what China is famous for (a definition Taiwan, China, and Australia, as well as the rest of the world, should be very familiar with given their relatively recent experiences with true western imperialism)... China may trade with, aid (and influence/deliver propaganda to win favor) other nations (see African countries today), but traditionally, it does not "take over" in the conventional sense. Now obviously, some degree of conquest was required when the various isolated independent warring states came together to form the empire millennia ago (see Qin Dynasty). However, the more peripheral aspects of its land mass have come about either as a result of China itself being conquered (see Manchuria and inner Mongolia) or come about during the period when those conquering outside forces ruled (see Xinjiang and Tibet). Apart from feelings of reclaiming what they believe is historically theirs and seized away by foreign enemies during a period of historical weakness (which occurred coincidentally during foreign Manchu rule), conquest is not really a big part of the Chinese psyche. Now I eagerly await your well-written response filled with references about island forming, etc.

By the '70's, the shells were just filled with propaganda pamphlets and broke up in midair to disperse the pamphlets. However, if you were unlucky to be hit by the shell, it could still cost your life. It once ricocheted and destroyed our TV set, no one was hurt fortunately.
The shelling would start at night, so no one went out during those nights. In the morning, the soldiers had to go out and picked/cleaned up the propaganda pamphlets, but you were forbidden to read them, LOL!

Do you know the city of Shenzhen? You don't. It is the city bordering Hong Kong. It has double the population of HK and 1.5 times economic output and 4 times growth. It is home to the 'infamed' 5G tech giant Huawei, Internet conglomeration Tencent (Valued no. 7 in the world by market cap) and numerous other high tech unicorns such as DJI that dominates the global consumer drone market by 70%.
Shenzhen has just been re affirmed as the model city for the rest of China to follow suit in terms of economic model, technology progress. This happened amid the Hong Kong Crisis. This obviously makes sense. the companies in Shenzhen hires people from all over China without discrimination and put them to work in high tech, online commerce and high value added manufacturing. What do companies in HK do? Banking for the ultra wealthy, constructing more micro apartments?
Listen, Hong Kong won't matter, it will happen way before 2047. It will happen naturally if HK does not resist. If they don't, the process will be quicker.
China does not need to show you Hong Kong. It is a bad product of mixure of colonial blood, capitalist greed and angry common people. It will instead show you a powerful, high tech fueled BUT obedient Shenzhen.

I think most people in the world living under an authoritarian regime believes that US democracy was gifted to Americans. A dangerous precedence is being set in the west by giving asylum to people living under an oppressive regimes. The refugees should stay in their country and fight. Blood has to be shed to obtain democratic rule, sometimes a lot of bloodshed. It makes sense that Germany would give refuge to 1 million Syrians since Germany did not have to fight for their democracy. HK can get their freedom back if they want it but they are ruled by their pocketbooks so they don't deserve it.

Housing prices got crazy high and young people have no future. Taiwan is just muddled by its own political environment, economy hasn’t really improved for 20 years (new graduate pay is less than 1990). Thank you I enjoyed the reporting very much. I was born in Taiwan to parents from the mainland, although we've immigrated to the US since I was 7. Taiwan is in a difficult place. Continue the military and diplomacy. Despite the unequal balance in power, a robust military can still put up enough deterrence so that a physical take over is not the easiest option for the PLA. Diplomacy is two part. One to strengthen Taiwan's tie with important allies (especially the USA) and the other to avoid directly provoking the mainland.
A third approach is simply economic. Do everything to improve the economic lots of the typical Taiwanese. For example, every student should have a working knowledge of English (or other important languages like French, German, Spanish, Japanese) so they can compete in the global labor market. This also blunts disinformation by the mainland if folks access western media directly, where mainland influence is weaker. Teach as many as possible management, financial, and negotiation skills. Be fluent in the ways of foreign laws, especially common laws practiced in Anglophone countries. Achieve deeper professionalism. For example, be a program architect, not just a coder; a financial controller, not just an accountant; or a scientist, not just a tech assistant.
Fourth, continue to nurture a common Taiwanese culture within the larger Chinese context. For example, there's a distinct SF and LA culture that is largely resilient to the larger American culture, now dominated by Trump and the GOP. Likewise each of the Anglophone country has its own unifying culture despite having descended from the UK. "Taiwanese" culture doesn't have to exclude "Chinese" culture.
Military and diplomacy can help Taiwan reach the most favorable compromise with the mainland. At a minimum, it buys time until perhaps when the mainland is less authoritarian. Economics sustains the military and diplomatic efforts. And should the day come that Taiwan is absorbed into the mainland, people have the means to emigrate if they so choose. Finally, a Taiwan culture means that "Taiwan" in some form can still survive, both in the people that are forcibly reunified and in the Taiwan diaspora outside the physical island.

If it comes to military conflict and the CCP is forced to kill off 10 M the backlash from the rest of the world would be relentless and 13M Taiwanese will have freedom.
