Great changes I agree with all of your observations. I don't understand why they always go small on the gauges and fuel level always a guess on all modern models.
just look at the gauge up close when you're stopped how often do u drive for an entire tank of gas worth of mileage and never stop or look down at the fuel level?
If I wanted no side panels on my bike, i'd take them off. It just looks like they forgot to put them on, or they fell off or something. Apart from that, I like the look of it and am somewhat interested.
Thanks for comparison. I had a '19 MT09 too and the thing was an overcooked noodle. It just didn't have the suspension/chassis the engine required. I reluctantly sold it rather than putting money into it. I loved the engine, but it just was dicey when really pushing. I have my eye on a '22... trying now to determine if they got the new suspension right. I supposed the SP is the safer choice, but supply is an issue too.
A VERY in depth look at this bike. Very obvious your enthusiasm for it gave your review a more passionate comparison to what you already own. I feel your conflict-ion. 2 years apart and a lot of modifications can seriously hamper your easy move to a newer, better riding bike. IF money is not your main concern, ask yourself this, are all those mods you slapped on really enhancing your ride enjoyment over this new bike? Seems to me the praise you gave this bike says the enjoyment and secure feel you get from it is worth the swap. Just don't over modify it in case a newer better version comes along in 2 more years. lol
I'm considering the new MT-09 or a Suzuki Katana 1000. I don't know which I would like best. I want something with a more up-right seating position than my Hayabusa or ZX14R. This was a good review of the Yamaha.
Nice! It is sorta ugly, but so was the last one. This one might be less ugly. I wish they would fix that "1,2,3,4" stuff and replace them with words like "track, sport, touring, and rain" and "high and low" for the TC. I had an XSR900 and never could keep that all straight. I only rode the bike occasionally, so keeping the "A or B" settings straight was a pain.
Nothing against the front end except it just looks like a plastic bucket. Less plastic with the same look would be a million times better. Right now you have a random molded plastic object and a bulb. Super weird. The plastic makes it look weird, not the bulb.
Nice in depth review, i'm an owner of the 2nd gen MT-07 and thinking of upgrading to 09. I was thinking of getting this 3rd gen of 09 but maybe wait for little while before it gets some revision on few things i.e. the bezel on the TFT screen. ;P
Man I wish Yamaha would make the mt-09 and actual cross plane “for those who don’t know it actually isn’t a crossplane despite the name” the new tiger 900 is a crossplane triple and it sounds amaaaaazing! It has a sound profile closer to the mt-07 and mt-10
Anything not phased directly inline (flat-plane) is technically cross-planed. A crankshaft plane is a theoretical plane in space where crank-pin centers are aligned, or co-linear. Any pin off that plane creates an intersecting plane, even if just 1°. All triple cylinder engines on the planet are cross-plane, even before manufacturers started calling them that. The only flat-plane triple that existed to my knowledge was the Laverda Jota 1000 (981cc) and even that was converted to the ubiquitous 120° phasing in 1982. Triumph's new Tiger is basically a common 270° parallel twin with an additional cylinder added, phased another 90º ahead of the 270° twin, which is why it sounds so similar to a 270° twin except smoother in tone. From the reviews I've seen, there's a lot of harsh vibration in the upper range of revs. T-plane is the proper theoretical description, and it probably produces some mechanical balance problems. They did it to space torque pulses to the rear wheel unevenly for traction off-road. Common triples are even firing, just like flat-plane inline-4 are even firing and not the best choice for dirt traction.
@@exothermal.sprocket fair points. But ide still like to see this style of triple in more applications. Vibration in high revs isn’t something uncommon for many bikes, twins and in-line 4s, so that wouldn’t be much of a change for many. And the stronger torque delivery along with the sound profile is what ide be looking for. The MT is supposed to be a “master of torque” and this style of triple I believe would only help it earn its name
The new IMU is definitely a big plus to upgrade. Lotsa comment on the headlight but they look fine tbh. The only headache is, where to install steering damper hahahhahh. Stay connected! Subscribed
I've been considering one but since I have been riding liter bikes for 20 years, I really don't want to down grade on power. I am highly considering the GSX S1000.
Actually its cause it use a different type of pump (radial if I remember correctly), the same type like that of a track bike I wanted to change it but the dealer explained that changing it will actually make the bike perform worse rather then better. Got the same on my old mt01 which shares alot of parts with the r1
Cool review, thanks. I see that you have a screen on your 2019 bike. Would you recommend this? I recently rode a GSX S750 and did not like the wind getting under my helmet at speed, say 130kph. Secondly was the turning circle ok around town? Not had the chance to ride the 2021 MT09 yet. Definitely on my list for a trade up now.
Love the screen. I put it on because I love the look but it helps keep wind off my chest, but my head is still fully exposed to the wind, which is how I like to ride.
Does the mt09 now have bi directional shift quickshifter? Some have said the older years only had quickshift up but I could swear the 22 have up and down quick shifter (clutchless shift)
I noticed the top half of the fuel gauge is now a single, large bar. I wish my prev gen's gauge was that honest lol Oh and rear sets no longer mounted to the swingarm pivot, thank you!
WTF?! RUclips will not tell me when you have a new vid! Great review! Is the back seat big enough to through a set of bags over it? This is a deal breaker for me is you cant.
KTM 890 or mt09 These are the 2 I have it narrowed down to. Reviews on the 890 are all positive but this new mt09 seems to make people quite happy also
I also looked hard at the KTM 790/890 as the reviews raved about them, but then I read a bunch of end user reliability issues (leaks, electric failures, etc). A local brand new 890 ended up twice in the shop because of warranty issues. While the MT-09 series has practically none. Guess which bike I bought in the end! :D
@@exothermal.sprocket I never asked for anyone opinions what I should buy. Just made a statement that I find in the 900 cc class these appear to be the leaders all around. I already viewed and tried both of them. Now I'm just waiting for the Ducati monsters to hit Canada so I can see those. Then it's purchase time. 😍
@@beefquiche not true at all. Lots of people have MT 09 for first bike. It's down to the rider and if you are mature enough to understand the fundamentals of riding. Don't be silly and learn to ease your way into it. Look on RUclips lots of videos people reviewing the gen 2 for first bike.
100% dependant on the rider as a 2019 09 owner myself. I cant speak to the D mode since the 19 didn't have that but If you've never saddled up on a bike before, this is A LOT of power for a new rider. You need to be honest with yourself and determine if you can have the self control to allow yourself to gain experience before using the full capabilities of the bike. I know when I was a new rider on a 250, I made simple mistakes that were not even intentional that would have thrown me off of the 09 if I had it then. Self control aside, do not underestimate the value if experience either. There are argument for both sides but you just need to be honest with yourself for your own safety. Wish you luck
It's financially and logically irresponsible to start on an MT-09. You'll probably knock it over and damage it (better off on a smaller lighter bike that's used and isn't going to cost a lot to fix). You'll invariably hinder your growth process learning the art of riding, due to every input on the motorcycle resulting in way more output than is optimal for learning. The power is way above your head. The braking force is way above your head. The handling, although light, is still much heavier than a bicycle and is going to be much more of a handful than a small 300-400cc motorcycle. Your first bike is not your last bike. Buy used, get a small displacement twin. Learn the controls, handling, get the muscle memory. When you knock it over, the scratches or dents won't cause you to have a heart attack or bust your bank account. Spend the money on quality riding gear. Also realize the riding gear isn't going to be or last gear. Spend money on training or courses. Consider the cost of gear, insurance, a rider course, other factors and stop focusing so much on horsepower and "grown up thrills". You might not even like motorcycles, come to find out. That would be an expensive 10 grand experience (and that's just the bike, not the insurance, tires, protective gear, training, etc). Teenagers usually are getting their first car-driving experience, getting their driver's license. The Yamaha MT-09 is equivalent to putting that teenager into a Corvette ZR1. Not wise.
@@beefquiche Actually I don't think so...those who start small, become excellent and over-confident, when they switch to powerful bike the results are not good...start off with a big bike, go through the whole teething process and you become a much safer and better rider. I started with Ninja 1000, was scared to death...in about 6 months became confident enough to go in group rides and more than a year became natural at it...and I am a quick/fast rider...
The wheelie-prone nature of the last model was much more the deficiency in chassis geometry, rear shock, swingarm angle, and the rear-weight bias of the bike. All things that really are the opposite of a stable, confidence inspiring ride. Horsepower isn't really necessary to unicycle a bike. A Honda Grom could be set up in a way it would wheelie at a whack of the throttle. I own the '18 MT. I'm also a mechanical engineer by trade. It's a messy bike with an awesome engine. I've also ridden the Z900 and the difference is worlds apart in terms of stability, balance, confidence. I hope this 2021 model (and SP) are miles better. Wheelies are actually stupid. It's just show-boating. There's no practical use or reason to wheelie; it's slower in acceleration, it prevents turning, it sets you up for a potential speed-wobble and crash, it's illegal in most states. It's no right to passage for skills. There's much better skills to learn like rear wheel drifting, gymkhana, slow speed handling, emergency braking, max lean angle turning, body position options, etc
Is this bike good enough and usually commuting friendly? for daily use and weekend touring? which one is beter? this version or SP Any way great video Be safe
Mt 07 is more basic, much more now. Throw a good shock and fork kit on the 07 and it’ll be a nice basic bike that’s really fun. The 09 is good right out of the gate. Might need a seat.
I am 5'7 155 pounds too, the MT09 is a perfect height with my feet flat and is definitely light enough, really easy to drive, easier than my Tracer 700 as seat slightly lower.
The headlight kills me though. At this point I rank this headlight last, the 2014/2015 headlight second, and the 2017-2019ish headlight first. Idk what they were thinking with this headlight. Instant turn off. I can't buy this as an upgrade from my 2014 MT-09. Will wait to see what the next gen brings, or just go for a 2019 if I'm getting antsy. Great video though, and was still good to see everything else on the bike.
I have an 18 mt09, and I would buy this in a heart beat if I had the chance, looks really slick and upgraded suspension and quick shifters? Damn sign me up

The MT-09 is 24kg lighter which is a HUGE advantage over the Honda in general handling and cornering. There is a reason why lighter bikes always spank heavier, much more powerful bikes on technical tracks. ;) Test ride both.
@@fyorbane Incredibly biased comments. I'm so glad you've got this all figured out. I mean, Yamaha couldn't sell a single bike if it was this simple. If power was the ultimate goal, everyone would be riding ICBM's around instead of motorcycles. A triple vs. a four are very different worlds in terms of what people like powering their bikes. It's not as simple as spec sheet numbers. No way. For the same reason professional riders would love to trick out a Ninja 400 and blast around a tight twisty track. Different experiences. No one person's opinion invalidates another's. Get the Hayabusa, because 120 hp is weak. Get the Triumph Rocket III because you gotta have at least 120 ft-lb torque. Get the Z125 because the Grom is ugly. Get the CBR-1000RR-R because everyone knows one less "R" is foolhearty.
@@exothermal.sprocket Having rode both machines I much prefer the Honda. As I mentioned above which you have ignored is the looks, the fit and the finish. Fit and finish is very important and the Yam does not compare well in this respect. The horn for instance looks like an after thought and the cabling is a bit messy and unsightly. The motor is great on both machines but the Yam quickly runs out of puff compared to the Honda. The black edition of the Honda just looks incredible and unfortunately the Yam has an awful front headlight design. But you have to weigh up all the pro's and cons and I agree with you it is not just about power.
@@fyorbane Aesthetics are very subjective. You'll find people who like it, people who don't. That's the case with every new bike release in the last 50 years. As far as the MT "running out of puff" up top as you put it, factory restrictions are doing this artificially. Both 5th and 6th gears the ECU (which now 100% controls the actual throttle blades) puts a speed limit on the bike, holding the power only where is necessary to maintain about 130 mph or whatever it is. ECU flash blows all that rubbish away and allows full power from bottom to top. The MT should achieve 150 mph without a problem.
I got the MT07 as my first bike. As I drove over 60k in less then 3 years I feel like I want to upgrade. Always been tempted by the brother MT09. Now that there's a newer version (2021) I kinda want to know from other people whether I should just get a older MT09 version, or really consider getting the 2021 version. Thank you for this video. It already gave some insight, just hope some other people could comment on it :)

I'll tell you why I'm not upgrading my 2020 model. An upgraded version you'll feel it, but with an upgraded suspension, breaks, sprocket, and a windscreen thrown on there it feels like an untamable beast that is egging you to have some fun. For the new version, sure it's more refined, but because of that, like you said, "It feels like a totally different bike." Yeah, a toned down MT10, and at that point. I rather buy the MT10, or an R1 for that matter.
Wiring harness would prove to be entirely different. Also with all the feedback from the new ECU, the data shown in the new 2021 model, nothing would be compatible.

@@maldridge7630 Well the TQ and HP figures of the MT09 may not match up to the Kawa 1000 but considering the 3K savings in cash and the 100lbs savings in weight It's certainly not far behind, if at all. I've had both the second gen MT-09 and the MT10, I really like the looks of the Kawa Z1000 and I have the 2021 MT-09 in order and probably stop there for a while. Hopefully nothing cool comes out for a while, because the temptations are getting too numerous :D
Great changes I agree with all of your observations. I don't understand why they always go small on the gauges and fuel level always a guess on all modern models.
just look at the gauge up close when you're stopped
how often do u drive for an entire tank of gas worth of mileage and never stop or look down at the fuel level?
I like everything about the mk3, including the headlight. The best value bike on the market.
That headlight wouldn’t be so bad if it were moved down a bit. It looks like it’s up to high on the forks.
Your torque listing was inaccurate. The 2020 and below mt09 makes about 65 lb ft and the 2021 is listed as 69 lb ft
Just don't over modify it in case a newer better version comes along in 2 more years. lol
That brake fluid container sticking up looks terrible.
Excellent camera angles. Great review. 👍
I'm considering the new MT-09 or a Suzuki Katana 1000. I don't know which I would like best. I want something with a more up-right seating position than my Hayabusa or ZX14R. This was a good review of the Yamaha.
3.2 gallon tank on the Katana. Big downer.
How about the updated GSX-S1000 now with 5 gallon tank? suzukicycles.com/street/2022/gsx-s1000
Go with a Z H2 SE and you will never look back
@@maldridge7630 You will always look back, scanning the mirrors for blue and red lights.
Yeah you found some of the local canyons I mentioned in your last video. Is this Angeles Forest I can't quite tell?
Great review...you are natural at this...enjoyed!
Is that the Ortega highway? Coming to Elsinore from Orange County?
Nothing against the front end except it just looks like a plastic bucket. Less plastic with the same look would be a million times better. Right now you have a random molded plastic object and a bulb. Super weird. The plastic makes it look weird, not the bulb.
Big Yamaha fan! Happy to shell out the coin on that one! Thx Alex, excellent review!
Did you sell the coin?
What navigation app do you use when riding? I particularly noticed the night ride when you had your phone facing horizontal. Pretty cool! App?
Excellent review - great detail, informative ride-out & some valuable comparisons with previous gen models. Greetings from the UK too!
An ADV bike might appreciate no key for seat?? If you have keyless, you should be able to use a button anywhere on bike.
Thanks for the info can't wait to get mine
Nice in depth review, i'm an owner of the 2nd gen MT-07 and thinking of upgrading to 09. I was thinking of getting this 3rd gen of 09 but maybe wait for little while before it gets some revision on few things i.e. the bezel on the TFT screen. ;P
Yeah, 89 foot-pound of torque, 89 newton-metre, whatever. Gosh, man, I wish the imperial system would just die.
Solid video. Well done 👍
Subscribed
Excellent video , but you left out two things and that is how much fuel the tank can hold and how many miles or Kms you can get out of a full tank
I've been considering one but since I have been riding liter bikes for 20 years, I really don't want to down grade on power. I am highly considering the GSX S1000.
Get katana, looks better imo
Great review, I like how much info you gave
the brake resivoir just kinda hanging out like the engineers gave up on it.
Actually its cause it use a different type of pump (radial if I remember correctly), the same type like that of a track bike
I wanted to change it but the dealer explained that changing it will actually make the bike perform worse rather then better. Got the same on my old mt01 which shares alot of parts with the r1
in 2021 the technology should by now have rendered this reservoir obsolete. Its such an eyesore on bike asthetically.
I agree. Imagine if they rocked up with that reservoir on the new Hayabusa.
Love this bike but that reservoir would have to go
Cool review, thanks.
Owned 2020 s750. Testrode the new mt09 and ordered same day. The Mt is much lighter and therefore easier to steer.
Love the screen. I put it on because I love the look but it helps keep wind off my chest, but my head is still fully exposed to the wind, which is how I like to ride.
Good morning Alex!!☀️😎
downward exhaust......what if the road is unpaved?
Does the mt09 now have bi directional shift quickshifter? Some have said the older years only had quickshift up but I could swear the 22 have up and down quick shifter (clutchless shift)
Is that a clunk first to 2nd at 0:22 or something else?
No, its your visor coming down.
What top speed? And, in your opinion, is more strong than previous model?
It’s like 144mph
It's 240~245 kph
I noticed the top half of the fuel gauge is now a single, large bar. I wish my prev gen's gauge was that honest lol
Oh and rear sets no longer mounted to the swingarm pivot, thank you!
Can we swap the headlight
Great review man!
Great review, very informational
ur saying that this is the sound of a Stock exhaust??? damn!
lovin my MT09SP 2023, much more fun at legal speeds than my R6
WTF?! RUclips will not tell me when you have a new vid! Great review!
Is the back seat big enough to through a set of bags over it? This is a deal breaker for me is you cant.
KTM 890 or mt09
These are the 2 I have it narrowed down to.
KTM are very uncomfortable and very unreliable
Go to Demos. Try them. It's way too complex for others to make such decisions for ya.
@@blockchainshark1392 Do you want to move up a notch to the 1L class? Suzuki's updated GSX-S1000 is a pretty great looking piece.

Great review mate! Best video review I’ve seen out of dozens on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Best review yet,Congrats!
Thanks for the review. Will you suggest this bike for a beginner since there's a D mode 4 as you mentioned?
Does it still power wheelie the same, or not?
Wondering this as well
The wheelie-prone nature of the last model was much more the deficiency in chassis geometry, rear shock, swingarm angle, and the rear-weight bias of the bike.
@@exothermal.sprocket you forgot something...
It's fun!
@@Bugside So is drifting, gymkhana, knee-dragging, other things that teach useful skills.
Didn’t realize there was a tfl ride
Is this bike good enough and usually commuting friendly? for daily use and weekend touring? which one is beter? this version or SP
Any way great video
Be safe
Get mine in 2 days, prefer the looks of the previous gen, but this one is just so much better stock
Really like it but don't like the menu toggle and I use it for a trip meter all the time
the new model sounds great, but looks like shit. looks like unfinished work. the look of the first version was the best.
Does it still have the stupid, high revving narrow power band with wimpy torque unless you are driving the crap out of it? If so, still junk.
Good review. Gave me most everything I wanted.
Im at a toss for the MT09 or the MT07. The MT07 has a much better entry price.
@Leland Holton i think you have more fun with the mt09 because its CP3 Motor and more power. I was faced with the same Choice and i chose the mt09.
Mt 07 is more basic, much more now. Throw a good shock and fork kit on the 07 and it’ll be a nice basic bike that’s really fun. The 09 is good right out of the gate. Might need a seat.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🥺👌🌞🌞🌞
Mt09 has cheaper insurance
Great review. very easy to watch and listen to!
Very nice! Thank you! Greetings from Russia!
Hello I’m also from Colorado but my question is I’m looking for a sporty type bike but I’m 5’6 155 pounds do you think this bike is too tall for me?
no you'll be good
The MT-07 may fit you better. But the Triumph Trident 660 is a much better bike
Great review!
Please advise if throttle especially on off is still snatchy?
I have an 18 mt09, and I would buy this in a heart beat if I had the chance, looks really slick and upgraded suspension and quick shifters? Damn sign me up

How eazy does this on wheelie compared to second generation?
some real nice upgrades but the wheels and headlight look ,,,agghh no
I’m trying to decide between the MT09 and the CB1000R. Any suggestions/comments?
Easy. CB1000R. The look, fit and finish on the Honda is on a different level. Also 143hp as opposed to 117hp. No contest.

This or Suzuki 2022 GSX-S1000, or Z900?
great review
I'll tell you why I'm not upgrading my 2020 model. An upgraded version you'll feel it, but with an upgraded suspension, breaks, sprocket, and a windscreen thrown on there it feels like an untamable beast that is egging you to have some fun. For the new version, sure it's more refined, but because of that, like you said, "It feels like a totally different bike." Yeah, a toned down MT10, and at that point. I rather buy the MT10, or an R1 for that matter.
Do you like it better than Z900?
I wonder if you can put the Speedo on the 2018 model
Wiring harness would prove to be entirely different. Also with all the feedback from the new ECU, the data shown in the new 2021 model, nothing would be compatible.
Easy best review of mt09 av seen so far
the previous gen did not have 85ft-lbs of torque, it had 85 newton meters of torque. The current gen has 69ft-lbs of torque
Is it smoother and no longer jerky in low speeds while crawling in traffic?
Yes
I wonder why you didn't choose the sp version.
I'm on a FZ09 first gen, how is the throttle, is it still twichy?
