Ethic unity means, in my humble opinion, that different group can live harmoniously in a peaceful environment while recognizing and appreciating cultural, food, dialect, habits, religion, etc... differences, etc...with a goal to bring the best out of each other for the common benefit of the whole
Wow! Profound learning experience. Enriched my perspective. Deepened my understanding. Thank you.

Excellent moderation and objective discussion. The transcript discusses President Xi Jinping's use of the pomegranate metaphor to symbolize ethnic unity in China. David Ferguson contrasts China's integration of indigenous ethnic minorities with the West, where ethnic groups often result from colonialism, leading to social tensions. In China, the focus is on integration rather than displacement.
A 1950 anecdote highlights early efforts at uniting ethnic groups, which Xi continues to emphasize today. Professor Shalu explains that ethnic unity has been a key goal in China for over 2,000 years, integral to its modernization and development.
Ferguson highlights the role of language in providing opportunities for ethnic minorities, arguing that learning Chinese expands economic prospects. Both speakers stress that China balances unity with preserving ethnic cultures, promoting "common prosperity" to ensure all groups benefit from development. The pomegranate metaphor reflects this vision of unity within diversity.
Ethnic unity must always be key focus by China to ensure lasting peace and provide equal opportunity for all citizens. Haven’t we all learned from history destruction of any civilization and country always start with discontent of different ethnic groups whether being discriminated against or not being treated equal. Just look at the world today. Most conflicts and civil unrest can be avoided if politicians have such basic understanding.

I suppose diversity is not celebrated….
If you hear that they preserve it, it then celebrated in the best form possible! The US and the West prefer to celebrate it superficially, while it forces the elimination of it.
Depend on what you mean by "diversity" and by "celebrated" . If you're talking about ethnic diversity, ethnic minorities can now show off their unique culture to rest of 1.4 billion Chinese population + foreign visitors, & make decent living while preserving their heritage. How is that not celebration of ethnic diversity?
In china every ethnicity was once Independent country so it is bound to be free and could not be assimilated or submerged under Han state
🐍🐀🤡
Han was once mny separate groups as well. All groups are subject to the dilemma of wanting to preserve the old traditions vs adapting new or foreign ideas that might improve their lives. What would be ideal is for the people themselves to determine what to keep and what to change, but also rational enough to ditch any traditions that have outlived their usefulness and became a barrier to survival and a better life.
4:44 26 ethnic groups signed the tablet on the monument, not 16.
