I always watch & appreciate everything you take the time to make and upload for us. These “Best of” type of lists are great, they help me decide what to watch with my limited time.
I wish I could watch everything you recommended (well ok, not *everything* lol), but this is a good place to start. Of course I really enjoy your individual reviews and deep dives as well.

Not that there was many to start with but I was the last one remaining at the end of my screening. I didn’t know how I felt about it at the time, but simmering as long as it has followed by a rewatch after months of processing, I think it’s wildly ahead of its time. Horror is in a transitional period where it’s trying to expand and redefine traditional genre conventions. It’s having some growing pains, that’s why this year feels so weak. But I wholeheartedly believe films like Beau, Infinity Pool, and Dream Scenario are the future of the genre

It's funny how many movie buffs that I know have a deep contempt for Ari Aster. I mean utter spite. I have one friend who refers to him as 'a monkey who just flings celluloid shit at the audience, and calls it a movie.' Normally that kind of hate is reserved for David Fincher or Christopher Nolan.

  • @thebeastandhistemptress
    @thebeastandhistemptress 7 месяцев назад +19

I’ve just watched BEAU IS AFRAID I don’t get the negative nonsense towards it. Wow…😮 I struggle with mental health myself and the intensity ARI ASTER brings to this film is masterful. It’s so touching as well. I know for a fact this film will get more recognition in years to come, I just don’t think people were ready for it yet. Everything in this film really touched a nerve in me.

Its less about the quality of the movie. Its just that its an Artsy movie, that is a movie category that is not popular. Same can be said about a well written Slasher, people who hate gore are going to hate & shit on the movie just because it isn't their thing.

@@federicomiyagi8366There are plenty of artsy movies that are great. The problem, is that a lot of artsy movies are only artsy for the sake of being artsy. Artistic interpretation is great to drive a point home but once the point is made, it becomes tedious and unnecessary. That was my main issue with Beau Is Afraid.
It does what it needs to do in 90 minutes but it just keeps going and going and going. I totally get why some people loved it but it was one of the hardest movies to get through for me this year.

  • @TheAnadrome
    @TheAnadrome 7 месяцев назад +5

Thanks Emma. It's great to hear your list. Here is mine, as it is, always incomplete at this point in a year.
    1. Evil Dead Rise - I see this as a lot less simple. But it does tell it's story straight forwardly. But I think the themes are much less obvious than most people probably interpret it.
    2. Infinity Pool
    3. M3GAN - Again I think there is a lot more going on with this film than simply being wacky. I think it hits this year for the same reason Barbie does and Poor Things, and probably the Taylor Swift concert movie.
    4. Beau Is Afraid
    5. The Voyage of the Demeter - Am I going to be the only person who sees what a great film this is? The reviews by many horror folks seems to be it's just a straightforward telling of the story without any twists or subversions. And my answer to those critiques, is when was the last time we had the actual those stories told without twists? Really when when was Dracula last told fairly straight? (Coppola's?) And I think we now have a generation and half who think the twisty versions are the standard tellings. I think we need more classic, unsubverted versions of all the great stories again. Especially since people seem by and large seem unwilling to watch the old classic versions.
    Other films I liked...
    Cocaine Bear
    Thanksgiving
    A Haunting Venice
My list is fairly limited for several reasons. I had two restrictions this year. One, as usual, several films didn't get here or came and went before I could get there. Godzilla Minus One came, but with only one English language subtitled version, to one theatre, an hour away by public transportation, starting at 10:20pm, while the buses stop at midnight, and only for a week. So I'll wait for blu-ray. Speaking of which I am souring more and more on streaming services. It seems that supporting them is helping kill both physical media and the theatrical experience. So I am restricting myself to theatrical releases or physical copies. (I fully realize I'm being a bit of a Don Quixote character here.) I was going to get a Netflix subscription for the month of December but then my bank card number was taken and it is taking a month to have a new card sent to me in this strange world I live in, so maybe in January.
Anyway thanks Emma. I appreciate the challenges and reminders. I really want to see When Evil Lurks! And Godzilla.

Minus One was definitely my favorite film of the year and getting to hear the iconic theme music blast through IMAX speakers again since King of The Monsters in 2019 was an absolute treat for me. Godzilla films are known for having the majority of their runtime be occupied by human character who audiences typically aren't majorly invested in, so it was great that all of the human drama in isolation was absolutely wonderful. Some people may ask about the reasoning behind Godzilla's random attacks throughout seeing as they don't quite feel animalistic, but when you consider how the director made him low key divine in nature (look up interviews with him) you could say there's a chaos to him that reflects the pointless destruction and devastation of war. PS the channel Proper Bird has an excellent video on Godzilla that I highly recommend watching.

Thanks for the list, Emma. We definitely agree on "Godzilla Minus One" and "Megan" is a solid B-movie thriller. There are a couple of titles that I still need to see, such as Raging Grace and Infinity Pool.
Here are my top five horror/thrillers for 2023:
    5. HELL HOUSE LLC ORIGINS: THE CARMICHAEL MANOR
    4. MEG 2: THE TRENCH
    3. HAUNTED MANSION
    2. GODZILLA MINUS ONE
    1. A HAUNTING IN VENICE

I'm actually impressed I've seen a good chunk of these films! I wasn't a big fan of infinity pool, but totally agree with evil dead rise, beau is afraid, when evil lurks, and scream 6 being on the list!

Megan. It definitely makes my list of top 10 movies. Just like Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon. Both seem to be very divisive and just hated by a lot of people but imo they were just a lot of fun. Great popcorn flicks that you can just rewatch over and over again. And Megan actually had a lot of heart, not to mention the doll was really superbly made. Not everything has to be higher art or 'elevated'. Great list btw.

So I went to the theater to see Wonka, and when I got there I had to make a choice. Surprisingly, Godzilla- 1 was still playing in a theater. I was set on seeing Wonka, but couldn’t shake the positive review you gave to Godzilla. So I went with Godzilla. Spoiler: I’m so glad I did. I have only seen a handful of the GZ movies, mostly the recent American ones. This was not only the best GZ movie, it is definitely one of my favourite films of the year. Thank you for championing it. I still have to see the top 3 films on this list. I know all 3 are pretty intense. I will catch up with Wonka, but there is no way it can beat the King of all Monsters (minus one). Thank you sharing your love for horror and dark cinema 🖤

I had the EXACT experience with your number one and I think it’s my number one too. I HAD TO go to the theater again right after seeing it, and I don’t think I’ve done that before. My favorite thing about film is when it makes you FEEL SOMETHING… and this… yup I felt many things 😂

You know, I saw Beau is Afraid 2 time and I still can't figure that move other than Joaquin Phoenix's performance is the best thing in the movie. My favorite horror of the year was SAW X with Evil Dead Rise coming in at 2nd and Scream VI coming in 3rd.

    Dream Scenario was...
Completely not what I expected. Starts off as a lighthearted and silly comedy then...
It jumped lanes and turned into an unsettling and creepy horror story.
When Evil Lurks had two crazy twist scenes that were. Damn... Horrific, but so well done. Avd both literally came out of nowhere.

Beau is Afraid is so unique and crazy, it took me on a journey not many films had, you nailed in your video, dissecting it would take years. Joaquin Phoenix acting was flawless really The only guy that could pull the roll.
