      I was going to mention Possum. It does remind me of Spider. I really like both. The short story Possum is adapted from is good too. I think the film works better for me , but the story's worth a read. It's in the anthology The New Uncanny.

    I come for the horror, I stay for the disturbing. On this list I’ve seen “Spider” and “The Woodsman”. Both of which are disturbing and feature performances that would normally ruin an actor’s career. Thank you for mentioning them. These lists are awesome. I want to watch all these films but have to do it in moderation, cause at some point I’ll have to leave the house.

    I've seen them all except the Argento one. I'm old enough to remember the off Broadway play Extremities. But never got to see it, Farrah Fawcett was a HORRIBLY underrated actress. She spent a whole career proving herself. Remember "The Burning Bed"?

  • @lesyeuxsansvisage1157
    @lesyeuxsansvisage1157 Месяц назад +36

    I stand by Farrah Fawcett being an excellent actress, who was pigeonholed for looks, and an abusive marriage to an ass. The Burning Bed is a film she did, that literally changed domestic violence laws. My Mum said “I thought it would be garbage, but she was so good, I just cried. I wanted her to hurt him. I want that monster to suffer.”
    I’m rather excited to see this film, especially as the survivor of SA. I have taken on the stance of I will survive, and take down ANYONE who tries to harm me again, and find movies like this cathartic. It’s also good to see another Farrah film where her talent could be seen.

      Sounds like your mother would be a fantastic person to watch extremities with. I absolutely love Farrah too, she is a fantastic actress - give Small sacrifices a go too, she is fantastic! Extremities is absolutely hard core, you can't look away! I've been trying to find the burning bed for years to watch and still can't find it.

    • @gavvo-7640
      @gavvo-7640 Месяц назад +4

      The Burning Bed... wow, just wow. THE best made-for-TV movie ever! Farrah is simply fantastic in her role as Francine Hughes. I remember my mum recording it on video one day when I was a kid... and something about it just grabbed hold of me tightly and wouldn't let go. Years later myself and my Mum ended up in a very similiar situation with a violent alcoholic. Read the book by Faith McNulty... Francine Hughes went through much much worse than was portrayed in the film. :(

    Out of the Blue, directed, and starring Dennis Hooper is incredibly disturbing. It is not a traditional horror movie, but like these films, focuses on "real life" horror. I won't spoil the film, but the story and acting are simply amazing, which makes it even harder to watch its inevitable tragic ending, which left me nauseous the first time I watched. Highly recommend, if you haven't seen it yet!!

    I HIGHLY recommend watching "Incendies" (2010). I was watching another video and ended up pausing it just to watch it. It did not disappoint!
    It's a Canadian-French film where a mother dies and in her will she leaves two letters behind for her twin children to hand deliver to their father and a brother they didn't know they had. And it sends them on a dark retracing of their mother's past. It has a crazy twist! I actually gasped and then I sobbed. Great movie! Incredibly underrated.

    Extremities reminds me a lot of A Case of Rape. It’s a 1974 film staring Elizabeth Montgomery. Up until watching that film I had only saw her as Samantha Steven’s in Bewitched. It was so difficult to watch her go through that. I remember seeing it on RUclips. The movie is a TV film with many actors still popular today. Extremeties is a decent movie, but for me Farrah Fawcett in "The Burning Bed" is brilliant but so traumatising to watch. Hard to believe it was a TV movie. L.I.E will always stick with me, and Extremities is a good one, too. The War Zone was good but disturbing to the point where I could not enjoy it. It just depressed me for days, so well done Tim Roth. There is a scene in L.I.E where Big John is telling an older boy, 'You got so old," or something like that, and for some reason, that line and the way that scene was delivered, I had to choke back vomit. Lol. That movie really got to me, but that scene was on another level.
    Have you ever watched Scum? It was a 1977 BBC tv film that acted as a cautionary tale about what happens to boys in juvenile detention centers. It is one of Ray Winstone's earliest roles. How this movie made it to television is wild. It goes there. Also have you watched Midnight Express from 1978? It is also hard to watch.

    Maxxxine trailer is great, and doesn't reveal much, basic plot set up, just whets the appetite. I know spookyastronauts usually avoids trailers but....
    The War Zone is rough. I had no idea what it was about when it was on, I was quite young, like a teen not a child, but, it was a lot for me.

    Thank you for talking about THE WAR ZONE!! I honestly thought the story about Tim Roth having to comfort the audience member was just hype for TIFF, which is my local festival...until I saw the movie myself. One of the most messed up film experiences I've ever had.

It is not easy to do what you do, and I hope you get as much joy and satisfaction as we do from your work! Thank you so much for continuing to challenge yourself and being open to the world! 👻

    Saw Spider twice at the cinema, really liked that one. I remember The Woodsman too, I felt like after Happiness there were a few films that felt brave enough to delve into that subject matter and The Woodsman was one of the better ones. L.I.E. was such a formative movie for me when it came out, I love that one! Young Paul Dano is so great. Even back then it was pretty hard to get a hold of though 😆

    “The Reflecting Skin” (1990) directed by Philip Ridley is also incredibly surrealist and strange. It’s mostly just weird but it definitely has it’s disturbing moments and I do recommend it. Viggo Mortensen is in it as well!

      Tim Roth actually directed it I have read to work through his own SA trauma - it’s based on a book and the writer was dealing with his child dying of lukemia so I think it’s one of those trauma based stories or someone looking for answers of their own

    Extremities was so traumatizing because it could really happen if your would be assailant somehow gets their hands on your contact information. He stole her purse, which is how he knew where she lived. That's enough to make anybody uncomfortable. He did not hesitate to drop by after her roommates went to work and torment her all day. I was so pleased with how it ended. It wasn't necessarily what I would have done, but she did manage to get some payback. It didn't make this list, but the I Spit on Your Grave franchise was very disturbing, to say the least.

    I remember back in the 80s, end of term at school and we could either go Alton Towers or stay at school and watch films in the lecture theatre.
    The films were Quadrophenia and Scum. I wondered if Scum was shown as a deterrent for bad behaviour, you could be sent to a Borstal back then.

    My parents thought it would be a good idea to watch 'Soldaat van Oranje' (Soldier of Orange) with us as kids, me being 12 and my sister 10. It is a brutal slow paced (Dutch) film about the 2nd world war and the many crimes against humanity (torture, including s*x**l torture type). I started cry screaming at a certain scene and could not believe my family was just watching with no visible reaction at all. The experience itself was traumatising honestly. But I recommend it for anyone who can handle war and torture, it's very good and I think realistic. For me this is the reason I refuse any war related movies.
    Edited for another Dutch disturbing movie: Spetters. It's a drama about a group of teens and includes a very graphic r scene (best to look it up for specific warnings) that had me bursting out in tears as well. Saw this as a young as well unfortunately.

      Unfortunately my mother allowed me to watch certain films that traumatised me too as a kid. As an adult I've said to her, why on earth did you think it was OK to show me that? (For example - a cry for help, true story)

    The art of acting really fascinates me because I feel like you have to be strong minded in order to play tough and disturbing roles.

    L.I.E. is such a severely underrated and mostly forgotten film that resonated with me so deeply when I saw it as a pre-teen, I haven't watched it again since but I can still remember it vividly. I do think the NC17 rating was a bit unfounded though, as while the subject matter is disturbing, it's thankfully not explicit in its subject matter, but I guess it was just too much for the MPAA to handle. As for THE HEART IS DECEITFUL-- that movie made me feel absolutely violated, and now knowing what Asia Argento did to Jimmy Bennett basically grooming him on set herself, makes it all the more disgusting to me, and I'll never watch it again. I honestly don't think anyone should rent it on VOD, since the money would probably go to Asia in some way, who is a vile human being, and hypocrite.

    I think one of the most disturbing films I’ve seen was Bully. It was the only film to ever make me gag because of its realistic murder scene at the end. It involved rape, manipulation, abuse, drug abuse etc And I was in the film industry for over 16 years, I write horror, have made horror films, and I draw horror. So, it’s hard to make me sick, but that film did it to me. It is a great film though, and based on a true story.
