Aang not learning waterbending is just him having ptsd i believe. In the animated show, he had a lame ptsd after firebending. Its weak writing considering that Katara was healed like 5 mins later lol. In this version, I believe that the fact that the only time he waterbended got him to lose 100 years is a more believable reason to be traumatized. That's my theory at least. Several little clues seem to indicate as much.

I’ve seen people forget one big change between the LA and animated is that there is no timer for the comet, in the og they had to train because they had a specific time (one year) the creators said they didn’t put that timer on the live action because the actors obviously are growing and they can’t say they have one year because by the 3rd season they would be so much older

That's a good point which many people seemed to have overlooked. Another point people overlook is Aang & Katara not having hints of a romance. People complain about it, but if you think about it, the show's timeline is expanded, so Aang/Gordon is going to be much older and more mature which makes more sense to leave all of their romance stuff until then. I always thought it was a bit weird with Aang being 12/13 and Katara being 14/15 and have them kissing and whatnot. It's logical to wait until Aang is a bit older and looking for that type of stuff.

About the whole Aang not learning waterbending, it doesn't bother me all that much because he doesn't actually struggle at all in learning it in the original. He's just good at it, he's immediately as good then briefly better than Katara. Like there's no real arc there for him - it's actually more important to Katara's development how easy it is for Aang to learn waterbending.
In the pirate episode where they get the scroll he learns faster than Katara and this is one of the things that upsets her and that prompts some conflict and character development, while later Pakku calls him out when he's training with Katara that Aang is just naturally gifted and doesn't have to try in the slightest. It's absent yes, but to be honest it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if they opened on season 2 and included it there, that Katara is trying super hard in her lessons and Aang just, isn't, and is just as good as she is, and that upsets her to bring in some low-cost conflict early in the season.

    • @MARYWTHER

And he was still traumatized for one and a half season until he meets the guru and then loses his trauma in 2 minutes meditation... cmon! The whole thing is kinda weak.
BUT having him water bend ONCE and lose 100 years time... now that's trauma. Way better to understand.

    • @Zoidberryable
      @Zoidberryable 10 месяцев назад

@@claudegrenier3180 I disagree with your take that it's bad writing. Your first ever experience with fire-bending is burning your close friend due to your own arrogance and mishandling of the element. That would be traumatic as hell for a goofy kid like Aang, whether Katara healed herself or not. Because that doesn't erase what happened, he still hurt her with his actions. He doesn't magically lose his trauma any more than Zuko does, they both learn to understand and accept fire from a different perspective than the fire nation's using it for destruction and death on a huge scale.
I'm not sure how being traumatized by waterbending would make sense given it was done in the avatar state, it saved his (and Appa's) life, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't even fully conscious at that time anyway.

If the show runners accept the constructive criticism, work on their shortcomings, improve writing, dialogues, if Katara's actress ups her game, if Netflix gives this show at least 10-12 episodes, seasons 2 and 3 will be amazing.

They primarily need to fix the pacing, the over explanation aka exposition, and concentrate more on the character moments like they did with the Fire Nation adaptation. Getting all the female benders showing up to defend the city is great and all, but no one talks about the other half of sexism: they're going to need a lot of healers afterwards, and it would have been nice if the guys had some first aid experience too.
Any jobs that are traditionally "women's work" like childcare, nursing etc., are thought of as less important in most cultures and men are made to feel embarrassed to be doing them, but they're objectively just as vital to society, require hard work and skill, and deserve more respect than they get. Men should be joining Yagoda's lessons and feeling honored to be there.

Although I don't personally care for the live action because of the changes they've made, if I'm looking at it from the perspective of what the show runners are trying to do and from the perspective of a new audience member I will point out that there is no reason for Aang to learn Waterbending at this time.
When he first wakes up he's still goofing off, he then finds out it''s 100 years later and wants to go home, they're heading to the Northern Water Tribe to get Katara a teacher. Aang is informed by Roku that the comet is coming by the end of summer which puts a clock on him having to face the Firelord and end the war. Even in the animated series we have a much stronger direction from Roku's conversation onward.
Without the ticking clock it doesn't quite make sense within the logic of the live action. He's 12, he looks like a baby. The war has been going on 100 years. He's not stopping the Firelord tomorrow, it wouldn't even make sense for him to fight the Firelord in a year. Even though they don't really go much into the martial arts aspects of bending we can assume it takes time to fully learn and master so although Aang is supposed to learn them all he has time. There's no rush. He's set up to stop the Firelord at some point in the future, he's supposed to do it but there's no reason to do it now.
That being said that's the whole reason why it exists in the animated series, there is a lot more structure in the series. Not saying I don't agree with you, I do. It's just that's not what they're doing.

while it has it's problems, I definitely feel like there's a solid base to work with here, a little bit of course correction is needed imo in Season 2, but it shouldn't be too hard,
two of my biggest issues were Aang not being goofy enough, and Katara not being defiant and spirited enough.
Toph's introduction is an opportunity to alleviate both, Aang has someone his age to bring out the goofy side (where LA Katara and Sokka felt like they had a more emphasised age gap over him) and Katara has someone to antagonise her a bit, where Sokka (sans Misogyny character arc) didn't give her a lot to work with

I think one thing that’s overlooked regarding Aang not learning waterbending is that 1) he’s talked about how he fears his own powers and how he only had Gyatso train him so there’s a degree of Aang trying to escape and run away from learning as he’s still coming to terms with his own feelings of guilt and pain, and 2) the lack of a comet and that looming deadline likely also contributes to Aang’s procrastination/avoidance.
Because he’s not exactly forced to have to learn, and he thinks he can just call the other avatars as a crutch, he’s not having any incentives to learn and he’s still trying to in some ways avoid his responsibilities.

Like George Martin said, " the books are the books, the show is the show". People need to give up their hang ups over the cartoon vs the live action show. they can't be 100% the same. The constraints of doing a live action show, and the fact that these actors are aging means that they won't be able to stay 12 yr old kids throughout the whole series. I'm amazed that they've stayed so close to the cartoons as they have. Not everyone who watches this thing is as familiar with the cartoon. I have enjoyed it for what it is, not for what I want it to be.

I'm looking forward to Seasons 2&3! The show isn't perfect, but I think it's doing a good job of adapting the story and making interesting additions! The first season of the animated series was always going to be difficult to adapt. It's much more episodic than the later seasons, Zuko hadn't started his redemption arc, and characters like Toph and Azula had yet to appear. Now that the creators have some experience adapting the world of ATLA, I expect that Seasons 2&3 will be a step-up in quality from an already decent show.

S1 sets up a lot of things needed for the following seasons though, so there are small things from each episode that have to be established even if there's no time to adapt the entire episode! All things considered, I think S1 of the live action was fine but S2 and 3 will be even better!

    About the waterbending:
    1) I think Aang probably "unlocked" or "connected to" waterbending by melding with the ocean spirit. So now he's probably willing to learn it, he'll probably say something like that in season 2.
    2) I think Aang will learn between seasons. There's no rush because they don't know about the comet yet and it will take longer to arrive in this. The actors will be older for season 2, so it's assumed that they spend a few months or half a year in the northern water tribe. The only reason for that would be if they are taking that time to learn waterbending.
    3) it explains why Katara is going to be better at waterbending than Aang for the rest of the series. Because it's established that Aang is more talented and more powerful. So why is Katara better? In the anime, Aang was better at it until they went to the northern water tribe. At which point he first tries to teach her secretly, so he even gets some extra training that she doesn't. Then when they're both training, the only explanation we get for why Katara now becomes better at it is that Aang was slacking off. Which works in kid's show, but Natla is trying to be more serious. So Aang not wanting to learn waterbending because of trauma is a better reason here. Idk, I think it's not ideal, but it could make sense.

    • @moe5020
      @moe5020 10 месяцев назад

all they had to do was a couple short training scenes though and they had so much time, the OG already gave the explanation that he didn't need much training as the tenents and phisosophy of waterbending are similare to airbending. And then in book 2 if he's learning water thats going to interfere with the arc he has to go on to master earthbending which is his main obstacle because it's so foreign to him. Also they didn't set up his feelings toward firebending if we are going to have him be unable to learn due to trauma that would be far more impactful if they saved that arc for firebending as Aang also was naturally good at firebending but didn't learn until later out of fear.

Which makes sense since the Avatar is supposed to help with keeping the balance, and good interpersonal skills developed from getting to know all the nations is necessary. and this skill is kinda hard to get without socializing and becoming friends with different groups of people.

I personally don't mind Aang didn't learn water bending so far as in this show, Aang's personal growth is into accepting to be the avatar. To be honest, he learned this one day before the beginning of the series. He is also looking for a waterbender master, while Katara is barely able to waterbend at the beinning.
I understand why it bothers some people tho. It is a different way than the og series.
As for seasons 2 and 3, I am very eager for those. Book one of the animated series was written in a very childish way and became more and more serious with the next seasons. Also, instead of having Aang's story unfold in 6 months, this will probably span over a few years to fit with the actors. Being 12 years old in the cartoon made us forget he was 12, especially with the Katara's love story. At least he will be a teenager during the next seasons.

The reason why I believe that the justification behind why they chose not to have Ang learn any bending in Season 1 is because Ang was "stuck" in Gyatso's death and the death of his tribe the entire show with guilt and avoidance. He was physically free from the Ice Ball of Episode 1, but not mentally or spiritually free. It wasn't until episode 5, when Gyatso told him that he couldn't have saved his people and would have died, that gave Ang the permission to heal and move beyond that. Episode 6 is basically just a continuation of 5, so there's no real time passing there to give an opportunity to learn/practice. Obviously, there is some time between 6 and the Northern Tribe in 7, but they're not going to have that happen off-screen. So, all of the other bending will be learned in Season 2 and beyond. These are just my thoughts, I don't know what the show runners were personally thinking.

i was upset aang didn’t earn any water bending too but after a while, i think it’s bc there’s no sozin’s comet yet so he doesn’t feel the urgency- just that the north is in imminent danger… in the og aang new after roku, so that’s the only reason i see them not, although i think aang in the og was already practicing pre-sozin’s comet… but now with season 2&3 coming i think it should get better (hopefully)

Its kinda funny that people think the live action suki and sokka connection felt rushed when the cartoon it was during 2 20 minute episodes and the live action is 2 55 min episodes, plus extra spirit world interactions.
Aang not waterbending was a choice from the director. The live action had to change the story from the original to make it longer due to the actors aging so its ok that its not in the first season. They should have more time to put it in in the 2nd season since most of the exposition was in the 1st season.

I want to start by saying I did loved the show and I'm happy there will be a second and third season. However I did not liked how they completeley avoided Aang learning water bending and Katara's character development. The whole point of them going to the north pole was for both of them to learn water bending, but here Katara just becomes a "master" out of nowhere and so she is ready to teach Aang. She first needed to learn from master Paku so she could teach Aang. And also she actually creates a better relationship with Paku after he teaches her. Other than that great show really looking forward to see more

1:19:20 You could argue that this entire show is building up to the Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula so it stands to reason that those two characters will get the most character building over the 3 seasons.
Just imagine if they land that entire scene . Getting chiiiiills already.

I’m ok with no waterbending for Aang this season cause honestly the CGI budget for this season probably couldn’t handle Aang doing both water and air bending. Since their going the route of him being a natural talent, makes sense he would wait until he finds a true master
