Hey thanks! My goal is to always be as faithful to the original as possible, but it's incredibly difficult sometimes. I mean, there's a reason the original musicians and producer create songs the way they do, so I try not to deviate too far from that, otherwise... yeah, I've heard some interesting cover versions over the years.
You can do a LOT with just a sawtooth waveform - it's very versatile... pretty much all we had back in the day. Yes, it's all about applying the filter, a bit of resonance to give it a certain level of nasal overtones, and the filter and amp envelopes to shape the sound over time. After that it's effects for the icing on the cake, like chorus, reverb, etc. Programming goes way beyond that, but you can get a lot of mileage out of a sawtooth waveform.
carlstadt1579 well thank you! I listen to this now and there are things I would do differently. The patches are pretty close, but there’s always room for tweaking. Some of the notes/chords here and there are slightly wrong, but not a huge big deal. And some production things, like the mix and volume and more... just subtle little things. Overall I still enjoy it, had fun making it.
Hey I love your cover so much, It sounds so original and closer to the real version. I wonder how did you achieve this drum sound. What type of plugin did you use? Did you use tr 707 for drum sound? can you tell me please. Thanks.
Everything I do is exclusively in Reason, and I rarely use anything except what's available in the Factory Soundbank, though sometimes I pick from a collection of drum samples that aren't part of the FSB. Looks like my kick is part of the FSB: Reason Drum Kits / exclusive drums-sorted / 01_BassDrums / Bd3_Vintage. The snare is Reason Drum Kits / exclusive drums-sorted / 02_SnareDrums / Sd2_Vintage. That being said, yes it does sound like these "vintage" samples came off a Roland TR-707. A little low end EQ boost on the kick, and some room reverb on the snare - no compression since it's already sounding compressed as is. Hope that helps, and thanks for listening and commenting!
Hey thanks Shrededit! And yeah, if people ask about any specific sound and what's involved I usually walk through the basics with them - depends on how much they know about synthesis and programming, because I don't wanna go off the deep end, so I may just say "it's two square wave oscillators slightly detuned going through a filter"... and if they know more about synthesis I'll talk about filter specifics like resonance and mod envelope settings, pulse width settings on the oscillators, etc.
@Paul Leskov - just years and years (decades really) of doing this, practice and patience and critical listening. You get to the point where your ears can identify elements as easy as your eyes can... that's an oval shape, it's blue, it has a yellow outline, and it's rotating clockwise, and it's moving left and right. It's like that. Just like you visualized that oval in your mind, you can draw it. It's like that, but with your ears.
Sorry - yeah, that's somewhat vague if you're not familiar with synth programming. In simple terms, an oscillator waveform is the core of a patch. Think of it like the meat in a sandwich - all those ingredients but the core is turkey, ham, etc. If you look at basic waveforms on an oscilloscope (by basic I mean the classic sawtooth, triangle, square, sine) they each have a distinct shape. To me, hard-edged means harsh and powerful, instead of round edges and soft. Sawtooth is hard edged.
Hey thanks. The synths on the chorus sections are straight forward hard edged sawtooth patches, a few variations in there but nothing vocal. Maybe you mean the softer verse sections, but even there, the synths are pads, no vocal elements.
Incredible version. Nicely done! I just purchased the patches from you. Do you have any ideas how to rewire Reason 8 into Mainstage 3? I'd like to play this cover live this weekend. Thanks!
Everything I do is completely 100% Reason. There is no plug-in for that sax part, it's just part of the Reason Factory Soundbank, just a plain old soprano sax patch with reverb.
Hey thanks James. It takes year of listening and experimenting. There are no shortcuts. I wish there was - I would have saved myself decades of work, lol. :)

Would you mind if I used this as background music for my videos if I link to this video in the description and linked to this channel onscreen at the end of the video?
well done sir. the urungutan (simian) track in particular is very good. not feeling the reverbs and some of the leads though. but all in all very well done!!
Unfortunately I cannot share the file - it is copyrighted work and the extent of what I can do is share it on RUclips as a cover version (which is legal) - but thanks for asking! :)

Hey dude, this is super super awesome! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind telling me roughly how you did the sort of 'pew' woosh sound before each chorus, the high to low lazer sweep thing? I've got them down okay but no way near as well as yours? (I'm not a reason user but the principals can be transferred). awesome job!
Hey thanks! Well, there's a separate left and right delay on the signal, so it widens it out pretty good. Those two delays feed a reverb unit, which gives it even more space and room. But the original unprocessed signal is just a diving synth sound, with a bit of a twist actually. Three oscillators involved. One osc is doing a pure dive, nothing special there. Another osc is doing the dive as well, but it's being amplitude modulated by a third osc doing the pitch dive as well, but a slightly weaker strength - exact percentage probably doesn't matter but that's what I'm doing here, it's just softer than the other dives, but you don't hear osc three, it's just there to provide amplitude modulation to osc 2. The dive is coming from the modulation ADSR envelope. Hope this all makes sense.
I've been getting so many requests for these patches, it's inevitable that I'll have a ReFill for sale soon. Go join my EditEd4TV Facebook page where I'll make the announcement eventually. For now though, it's an NN-XT with a monkey sample from the Factory Soundbank, processed with plenty of distortion, filtering, and reverb.

Ok I see. So a straightforward sawtooth would mean a basic sawtooth waveform without many effects or filtering? Did you just use some reverb and delay? Thanks a lot for your help!
Hey CottonWolf... I would love to do it. I actually did a bit of a class with Propellerhead a while ago, it was their "Music Making Month" and I discussed my process, you can view it here on RUclips if you search around for it. Looking back at that class, there was soooo much I left out, I should do it again and add in the stuff I left out, and new content that shows visually what I'm talking about, how to learn to listen and recreate sounds. But for now, go find that video here on RUclips.
Hey thanks so much for hearing the accuracy! Check out my channel for another video where I step through all the synths of this song, and how they were made.
+Matteo Lacava Reason doesn't support VST plugins, but instead it uses a proprietary format called Rack Extensions. But I'm pretty sure in this song I used only native synths and effects that come with Reason. The specific sound you're probably asking about is that primary melody. Read the other comments here for more details about it.
+EditEd4TV thanks for the infos and for sharing, i didn't know about reason... Yes i meant the primary melody in the Intro, i'm gonna read everything and subscribe your channel. Still my Congrats, your Art is great! take care
The whole process of converting the captured MOV file into an MP4 and then uploading to RUclips where they convert to Flash, etc... it can really mess with the sound - reverb levels seem to change, pumping compression shows up, it's very odd. This one is particularly different from what I'm hearing here, but it's ok.
I think your cover is the most accurate. It has almost every little detail. Congratz, man.
Hey thanks! My goal is to always be as faithful to the original as possible, but it's incredibly difficult sometimes. @@EditEd4TV Please, you could do a step by step tutorial from lead. (Vocal Gibbon) I tried it here, and it’s not perfect like yours.
:(
I have been looking for a tutorial on the lead how did you make that lead
That vocal sample is not an easy thing to recreate, very nice sound design work all around, great job.
Amazing Cover, ridiclous sax processing!

Hey thank man, I appreciate it!
I still listen to that song to this day. It's just amazing work. You should be proud of yourself

This sounds absolutely amazing. As far as I'm concerned this is the best song ever made, but you did not spoil it one bit. Fantastic!

Great Job ED. The best covers available anywhere, especially your expanding 80's catalog. Still in a league of your own.

RUclips conversion to Flash can sometimes do this, but I'm not quite hearing it here on my system.
Good cover, but why does the overall audio pulse with snare hits?
Really good job. How are the background synths done on the chorus? It seems like there are some vocal elements on the original track too.
