How to: Clean your EGR Valve (1.9 CDTi)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
- Welcome Bluudies, The Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTi EGR Valve has real big issues with Blocking up, and Need cleaning regularly, I have seen them much worse, and its worth doing once a year, or when you service your engine.
The cleaner I used - amzn.to/3q4dH1a

This video has really helped me - thank you so much for freely sharing your knowledge. My old Vectra was rough on start up, wouldn't accelerate very well in 1st/2nd gear, and I was even having to change down a gear or two to get up fairly shallow gradients. I took the valve off & it was full of soot and sticking - I felt there was no need to take the solenoid apart (as shown in other YT videos) as the pin was moving in & out freely, so the issue was purely with the valve itself. I've described the symptoms in case they are of value to anyone experiencing similar problems. Car is performing far better now - thanks again.
I am glad that after all these years the videos are still helping people. You are more than welcome :)
Had the confidence to replace the egr valve thanks to this video.
Thank you so much for this video. I know nothing about car maintenance but this showed me everything I needed to know. Took the EGR valve off and there was just a pea sized hole for the gasses to pass through. Now the car is running g perfectly. Thank you. Corsa D 1.7CDTi
That's awesome glad this videos still helping people after all these years!
I need to do this to my Corsa D 1.3CDTI, the check engine light has been on for a little while.
I used my OBD2 reader and it's saying the EGR Valve is the culprit.
Hopefully I can do this no problem with the clear instruction Bluudys given in this video.
God only knows how much a mechanic would charge to do this.
My Vauxhall (aka SAAB 9-3 TiiD 1.9) EGR valve has been causing lots of problems. This video gives me a fighting chance of keeping on top of it. Much appreciated.
It was just 1/2 of the required cleaning process. Do not forget (what it was not shown here probably was not done either) to unscrue 6 small torxes screws and open the inside camber with electrical coil inside. Then remove the ash, clean and move the coil. The coil must move gently. When the coil stuck do not panic and shake strongly. Do not install the EGR when you coil is blocked!! Good luck.
Excellent how to, wayyyy better than a lot of the others i have watched, cheers
Good Vid! Note that it's always best to take the solenoid off the EGR valve housing and make sure that the sprung valve can open and close easily and also get a interdental toothbrush in there or the likes to clean the valve seating area and the piston area and WD 40 lightly so the spring is moving well and the seats and valves are clear of gunk. If there is gunk on the two EGR valves themselves or on the seats then new gunk will adhere to those surfaces too. Always clean the narrowest gas gaps!
Had this problem this morning on a Saab 9-3 (same engine)
RAC man said to clean it, but to get the car started you can tap with a mallet to free the valve
Just to get you going. Great Vid thanks for posting.
I removed mine, took the electric part off it and cleaned it using an ultrasonic bath, ,result, really clean. that is the best way to clean it properly.
Nice and simplistic how-to guide lads. Even I'm gonna have a go now!
thanks for the comment!
thanks for this, i am a complete mechanical idiot so a nice step by step is exactly what i needed :)
Great video, you made it really easy to follow. Well done. Unfortunately it has sorted the problem out with my Vectra.
Keeps losing power and struggles to start. Changed the fuel filter too, but still no joy.
Grifftinderpals Have your battery and glow plugs checked
Bluudys Garage ok, I will. Thanks for the advice
Extremely helpful video mate thanks for posting 👍🏼👍🏼
And for those wanting to know. Fully blanking this will cause the engine management light to come. You can get this remapped out of the ecu to combat this. But you car will kick our much more NOx into the air which will cause it to fail an MOT of this is above the tolerance level for your year of car....
I drive mercedes benz c220 cdi coupe - vehicle gone in limp mode and I need all advise to resolve my problem! Thanks your video gave clarity on one aspect I should check - thanks ! DPK
Will this get rid of an engine light? My mechanic said it was an EGR valve. Most say you can just clean it and it will take care of it.
Excellent video - just finished my Saab 93 150BHP engine
gave me a lot of confidence to clean it myself - was not sure what to do with the engine section, thats was completely blocked to - so i cleaned out with a rag with carb cleaner on - but not sure if i could just clean that section too
Good videos. Your videos have helped me on a number of occasions. Keep it up.
Thanks, it's good demo and strait forward, I'm going to do mine on Sunday
Thanks for you great comment!
I have a 1.9 TDCI vectra Sri 150, it’s had a stage 1 remap, egr blanking plate + delete so not its at 212 bhp, 35mm lowering springs and it’s getting a straight through exhaust system with a front inter cooler :) vectra’S 4 Life :)
EGR Exhaust Gas Recycle. This changes the thermal properties of the air charge entering the inlet under certain conditions, load etc. It makes the fuel explosion in the cylinders on the power stroke more efficient at burning up greenhouse gasses. Your car may have a blocked cat or sensor problem or may have a mechanical problem such as timing out or air sensor broke. Get a test computer on in and a mechanic to check the physical components.
Very useful video thanks
Great video, the EGR system on these engines are their biggest (and only major) flaw. So much crap get recirculated.
Catch can and a seafoam intake spray will keep it looking and revving freely but its just such a terrible design.
Any of these after 100k will have what can only be described as chocolate brownie sludge everywhere from the EGR valve all the way through the intake manifold, which is an active valve system (meaning there's important moving flaps in there that need to work freely) I can't believe manufacturers were willing to do this... Cover the "throat" of the car in piles of oily sludge.
If you're not willing to blank the EGR off (will screw you at MOT) get the whole intake system cleaned, install a catch can and seafoam it the week before a general service, will keep it going. 👍
Great video mate, very easy to keep track of the process thanks
thanks for a good comment!
Thanks man, i try to keep the levels ok, but will admit the first videos i did may be bad, but id like to think they have improved as videos have progressed.
Great vid mate just cleaned mine didn't think it was that bad save me £££
Great job!!!! Thanks for helping us all.
Thanks - I cleaned out with a screwdriver to get most of the lumps out and then with the rag - but was not sure what the area looked like so i was very careful - but wanted to use the spray on it to really clean - but was a bit nervous
The performance appears to have improved and its reving smoother. If I could see what it looked like and how to clean without pushing any into the engine
Do i need to clean other parts.
3years ago , they replaced all the pistons/valves with scrapers due to bldup
Worked perfectly, Thanks man. Although I need to add one bit for safety.
1. When spraying the Cleaner into the valve, make sure you keep it away from your face and at an angle so it doesn't splash back into your eye balls! Speaking from personal experience trying this today, just about lost my left eye - Trust me it burns like a motherf&*%^r.
Nice one mate. Just to had one tips on that engine (astra h 1.9cdti) clean the MAP sensor that is next to the EGR valve. If EGR is full of carbon MAP sensor will have some too making your boost reading incorrect.
txautosport in essex sell EGR blanking plates for £4.99. MUST!!! Drill a hole in it or the engine light WILL come on, i've done it as my EGR got stuck open before i went and got a replacement. (was cleaned the same day by AA following breakdown)
It dechokes the unit. allowing the solenoid and spring to work efficiently.
Excellent vid You make the job look easy enough for NE1 to tackle. Do you know if this will remove the two fault codes I have on my car? PO400 & PO402
Why did you unblank it?
donde se encuentgra la valvula egr en un avenger 2008 2.4l lo lleve a que lo escanearan y me salio esa valvula junto con el sensor de cigueñal te agradeceria me dijeras donde estan ubicadas gracias y buen video.
you do know the egr having problems is not normally caused by the soot(unless its huge buildups) its normally caused by corrosion in the solonoid which is behind the star key 4 bolts and you drill a small 3mm hole in the top of plastic and tap the solonoid out then grease the movements and refit ;)
Same egr valve on alfa engines :D
the only place soot will foul is the seats of the movement.
Excellent video, Thanks.
also clean the port where the valve bolts onto the body the difference is noticeable
Good video, cheers.
Simon Commons your welcome!
Wicked vid Just thinking I may not be up for the job lol typical woman i know Thanks for the advice
Thank you young man, wonderful engine light disappeared immediately. I also have whit smoke and soot on hard acceleration may be diesel hopefully as the engine has quietened down a bit now too, I put Wynn's stop leak and diesel clean burn. Tnx mate I hope it stops smoking on acceleration though so any advice much appreciated
good advice.
Good video thanks mate.
Thank You!
You could clean the throttle body. That could have some build up.
Bluudy
Thanks, Which blue plug are you refering to?
Nice video, same engine in my 205 Saab 9-3 intend cleaning it Ina while. Is the blanking valve a better alternative? Did u have to get the car remapped for it or anything else done?(I assume you dot just bolt on the blanking plate do you?) Let me know I'm curious Thanks.
I had idling problems smoke cat problems car was running crappy pulled this off good clean taking mine off on my vectra let me see into the air intake in engine saw a puddle of oil not good ragged it out realised it had come back in from exhaust cleaned her up blanked it tightened air vac car runs better than ever just for £2.95 who can complain at that
great informative vid thanks!
Great vid. Thanks!
To clean it use a toothbrush so you can get in the corners but don't forget to leave the cleaner for 4-5 mins and then start cleaning it
Excellent video, well done Just one question, if you have a blanking plate fitted, how is it getting sooted up?
Plate was fitted afterwards!
Good video thanks
Good video mate. Cheers. Will it be similary for 1.6 astra 51 plate?
Great vid mate. Can you confirm what make, model, year that is on please?
Would cleaning the EGR valve also help/prevent P0170 Fuel Trim Bank 1 errors on a Vectra?
Helped me out... thank you...
That's great!
hello thanks for video easy to follow ;)
your welcome
the engine light came back on with the same fault code - I did not check the solenoid or clean out with a toothbrush - also as mentioned the manifold side was very dirty and i was very apprehensive to get in and really clean that - any further advice ? would be appreciated
visit the forum, and start a discussion. links in description.
Hi guys. Just wanna ask if you got the egr blanking plate on will it get through the emission test on mot? And yes video was helpful thanks
This is what I'm wondering, somebody said drill a small hole in it to stop engine management light from coming on, also what are the benefits from the banking plate do you know?
Is the valve in the EGR ment to move freely when removed from the engine. As in, can you move it with your finger when cleaning. because while i was cleaning mine i noticed it wouldnt move. but wasnt sur if it was because it wasnt connected to the battery? please help!!
Hi my name is sean i have a 2001 mitsubishi montero sport 3.0 and iam currently trying to resolve my EGR p0401 code.I removed the egr and perform a diaphragm and valve test, they both seem to past the test.Only thing I can think of now is a clog in the tubing or dpfe sensor malfunction.Any ideas on what I should do before throwing new parts at it?
Also I couldn't seem to find the dpfe on my vehicle.
Thsnks
Great video could i do this on my vauxhall vivaro 1.9 SWB van if so what would be the benefits.??
Why don't you use that valvoline egr spray cleaner?
Cleaned my EGR valve today on my 08 plate Saab 93 150 TID and reset the fault code. When I started for the first time the engine revved out of control, black smoke from the exhaust, I quickly killed the engine, restarted and revs were ok, any reason for the high scary revving?
Clear video by the the way, most helpful.
Hmmm, off the top of my head, ive not heard of that happening before. so no idea unfortunately
.
maybe some cleaner got sucked in to the engine after cleaning?
we Agree with Mindaugas
You most likely accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal slightly. It doesnt take much travel for it to rev high when put in neutral, it has happened to me, but luckily the engine was warmed up already.
Theres nothing wrong with cleaning engine side. Just try not to push muck into the engine. Any more questions click the forum link in description
did u have to map out the egr when u blanked it.great vid
You can do to remove any EMl Lights
great thanks
exellent video thank you ps you dont happen to know where my blue plug is on my honda accord 2000 model i cannot find damn thing my abs light is on
Just bought a car Astra H , and i would like to know how EGR Valve clean effects the car ?
Hi bluudys, any chance you get tell me if it’s the same process to clean out the EGR on the 1.7cdti Astra h Isuzu engine? Having the 4005a and 50074 codes and I‘ve whittled it down to at least one of them being the valve as I bought it used and god knows when it was last done, just finished a radiator flush today and it was looking horrific
Any help is very appreciated and thanks for your content!
Hi there ive watched loads of your vids great tips ... but ive got a problem with my 1.9 cdti wen I put my foot down hard there is loads of black smoke and struggles to boost the 4000rpm wat could be the course of this? Ive cleaned the egr out but still the same any help much be much appreciated
Paul Nicholls mine does exactly the same only owned the car just over a week, gonna try cleaning the EGR valve but if that doesn't work how did you fix yours? 😀
Hola , mi motor es el 1.9 CDTI 120 Cv y quería saber como quitar la carcasa de plastico. Thanks friend ;)
It's ok this video but you miss the part where you should disassemble the actual egr and ensure the spring mounted valve isn't gunked up. This should also be done using wd40 and lots of presses in and out. If you don't to could be a waste of time just cleaning the bit you have. X
agreed, the solenoid is the part that messes up. its more so rust and corrosion that causes it to get stuck it should be drilled out with a 3mm hole and then punched through. cleaned greased and reassembled. there's guides on google.
O
what does an EGR valve do. Also my car does not picking up speed even when the accelerator is all the way down.
What do you mean by blanking it out?
To make the video less boring.
Bluudy
Hi can you do a video how too change glow plugs thanks
Mohammed Pervez if I ever get the chance I will. They are easy to change on the 1.9 providing they have not got seized into the head
Hi, I got my Vectra 1?9CDTI lost power. Error code shows intake air system leak. Gave to a local garrage and they changed new EGR valve. The problem came again while on road and broke down in middle of road as it cant climb steep roads. Can you advise me to fix it. Where can I take it to.
Can you show the process to blank an remove the egr completely
You would need to unbolt it. Mount the relevant banking plates. And get someone to remap the ECU. This car has long been sold so no cant.
Great work, I have a SAAB 93 with the same engine and the fault I have had is throttle control module. Is this the throttle body the same thing? And is it possible to clean it?
it sounds the same thing, but whats your fault, as it may be electrical, but will most likely be the throttle body not the EGR
Would I still need to clean the egr valev if I have it blanked off?
Car manufacturers really are progressing backwards at a hell of a rate of knots.... EGR valves ... DPF's.. Dual Mass Flywheels... what the fuck, absolute shit. Modern cars really are crap.
DPFs and EGR valves are the biggest problem with car engines nowadays, diesels especially. My dad has owned two Zafira's (since 2006) and has had nothing but trouble with the EGR valve on both. He is going to have to take the entire manifold off next because of the design on the Z19DTH in his current one to clean it...
Does it disconnect the exhaust whilst doing this?
Merci
Any video on how to remove one on a 2007 1.3 astra?
Hi. Not yet. We having had the joys of working on one yet.
my EGR is deleted but I have lost of boost. Do you know what is causing it ??
Had mine cleaned, didn't do anything, the light came back on after a few miles, and they where like "oh yeah it doesn't always work"
Our most popular video to date is the How to clean your EGR Valve
How to Clean your EGR Valve
Hi would this work on a vw mk4 1.6 too? Essentially to fix and idle flactuation issue that im currently experiencing on the car.
Theres a good chance on that, I did a video on that as well :)
Why clean it if it's blanked?
Spot on
Hi mate I have an 07 1.3 astra cdi and the egr valves seems to be much more hidden than the one in your video. How much do I need to remove before I can get to it to remove and clean it. This is from Brendan in Wigan it needs doing soon.
Hello, ive never looked into the 1.3's, you will have to follow the boost pipe from the intercooler to the inlet manifld, somewere on there you will find the EGR valve.
How many miles would u clean it after roughly because i do alot of driving and my swirl flap just broke, was gna replace and clean the egr this weekend! Never done egr clean
That depends on your driving style. Motorway town etc. Once a year with the cars service should be fine for most.
What was the code? For more advice check out our forun. Link in description.
Everyone I know who has a Land Rover with a 300TDi engine in it has removed their EGR and binned it after fitting a blanking plug...
You have to split it this is clearing for 40%
To film the other video :)
