I have the Magmod system and what I do for quick change gels is place my own gel cutouts in between the grip and whichever attachment I am using at the moment. When I'm not using a grid or sphere, I just use the gel "holder" just to hold my gel in place. Quick and easy. Great video! Earned a new sub!
Everything you said was so true and on point. Magmod wasn't for me either for the reasons you said: it's too bulky/heavy and felt that the light it gives off is too harsh and "flashy." I also noticed it gave off a bluish tint in my pics. Anyway, awesome video as always and I appreciate the natural humor you put into it LOL
Just discovered these on Amazon. Been researching for a few days. But now that I know YOU have a video on them, I can rest easy knowing my research is over.
I was once a magmodder until I started using the round head magnetic attachments by godox/flashpoint. The simplicity and mobility of the system is far greater than that of the magmod system. I also have the ability to use the accessories in a run and gun situation or in a studio setting with softboxes.
@@radhamesreyes5562 Good to know. I bought a magnetic grid that came with a tiny half magnetic dome. Didn’t know if that would work since it’s smaller. I will give it a try.
I've seeing people use the sphere on the V1 but I'm wondering if the V1 dome is sufficient enough. How much better...if at all is the mag sphere compared to the V1 dome?
Like you said in the beginning to each their own…I bought into the MagMod system a few years ago and love their products. I keep a “ready” case all set to go with three flashes that have the magnets on them already. Also bought the gel kit that holds an assortment of gels in a wallet. You mentioned the MadSphere produced harsh light but I always get a nice looking soft light when I use them.
Hey Omar! This is a really useful video. You just saved me some money. ;) Watching you get genuinely frustrated by the magnetic stuff is brilliant, and speaks volumes.
Thanks, for the "Keep that in mind". I have heard nothing but positive things about this system, but I knew there had to be some limitations. For what it is, I find it pretty expensive especially the assessories.
I loved MagMod in the beginning. Then I hated it. And now I love it again. I would not use it on every single wedding I shoot but I tend to grab MagSphere more often now. Rogue Flash Bender works great too. It just depends of the venue what I use. That tip with sheet of CTO get and velcro strap was just genius. I've done the same thing. Although I paid more attention to cutting them nicely :) CTO gel on the dance floor changes everything. I bought full Lee CTO 3200K and 1/2 Lee CTO 3800K. Both work great.
I love Magmod and will defend them, tirelessly, no matter what you say Omar! Jk, but fr, I'm a fan of their system. This was an interesting take, though. Appreciate you and these videos.
I just bought mine sphere and gird kit last week, so far I am happy with it, cause it’s pretty handy doing flash work on windy condition. I do agree that the sphere is a bit harsh if it’s near the subject.
Glad you're happy with it. Just a little lighting lesson...the closer the light, the softer the light. So bringing the light closer to the subject actually makes the shadows less stark.
I think this is a very fair review. I use this system and like it. I do wish you didn't have to buy and entire kit to get just a couple of pieces. Great video.
ps I used to use one of the old Rogue Flashbenders!! One of the best run and gun light modifiers I ever used. Wish they'd kept updating their stuff, they were defs headin in the right direction.
I did a deep dive into "the system" and it mostly sits in a suitcase, well separating the magnetic pieces because sometimes the magnents migrate out of their little slots and attach to another magnet on another piece and they do not come loose or until you find out from the mag mod people that there is a youtube tutorial on how to get that mess to the edge of a table and work that stuck magnet off of the piece so that you can get it off the floor and back into the piece it belongs to. Now, if you are on a job and this happens, it could throw you for a real loop. It does happen enough for them to make a video to fix the problem.
I bought the Flashbender at the Las Vegas convention in 2015, and a full MagMod kit at that convention in 2018. I was using the Flashbender on my flash it's really heavy though. At the 2018 convention I was using it at the event and a rep at the Rogue table said that the Flashbender really isn't for use with an on-camera flash. The elastic used for the first version doesn't seem very strong. I was told they made a newer version that's better. I've played with the MagMod, but haven't used it much.
I got the cheap Chinese knockoff set by Selen off eBay, didn’t have to think about the cost or justify it to myself. I got it with a grid included, not that I use it. It’s been great 👍🏼
At 8:28 - I’ve also found this to be true!!! Oh my gosh - I’m not losing my mind! I used to work with another photographer who shot Canon without the MagMod gel. He always said my Sony was the problem!
Thanks for the video, though I feel like this might go more into advanced territory than the intermediate photographer that I am, but still useful. Some of the need for different attachments is still a bit confusing to me, so if you ever are looking for a video subject I'm sure a lot of people would love that flash series you previously pitched! Thanks again.
@@ogonzilla it’s not in the video but does the magshoe work with the ad200/evolv200? And if you didn’t use the mag sphere what size modifier would you use with a 200 watt light? And do you prefer magsphere combination with the grid or just by itself ? Oh and I enjoy the entertaining but informative videos. I bought a peak design slide strap and recalled the funny one you did on peak accessories
Just a quick comment on the gels..I have the magmod system and for gels, if you use the rogue gels, the 2x tabs on the gels just fit between the magnets on the modifiers so you dont actually have to use anything to hold them in place. easy workaround
Thanks Omar, couldn’t have come at a better time as was just looking at investing in the Magmod system, expensive when you need multiple kits for 3 or 4 flashes!.Think I will stick with my Honel and Westcott systems and accessories. Do agree that the Honel grids are a pain to fit on the speed lights! Really appreciate your videos and your humour always cracks me up!🤣All the best from WA🇦🇺👍
Good review. A few things though....maybe don't focus so much on the wonder of magnets and maybe use that time to show some shots. I just got mine and I think it's a great addition to my strobes and speedlites. Actually the quality was surprisingly good on my Canon EL-1 Speedlight. So I think this Magmod system is a bit better than a quick fix. I think it can much used light modifier to go with softboxes, etc. Agree with top heavy! Also putting on the stretchy boot is a bit of a pain.

Good information. Two things: 1) do you have a video on using a gel system? 2) Do you have a video on getting correct color balance and monitor calibration? 👍🏽🔥
This is a great review. However, you do say "Keep in mind" 20+ times. The information is awesome, but that can get a little distracting. Just something to...keep in mind. ;)
I don't know if they made the softbox dome lighter, but my 530EXII flash sometimes struggled to stay in some of the angles due to the weight. But overall, I like the system and only sold my accessories in January because I switched to Fujifilm. Very thorough and fair review Omar. I'm going to check out some of your other suggestions.
Can I ask, what size Flash Bender do you use? I was looking into the MagMod, as a photographer I know uses it with great results, but it looks like the Flash Bender might diffuse even better. For reference, I use the Canon 600EXII-RT Speedlite. Thanks!
So I bought the the standard Magmod Kit & paired it with a Godox V860iii for my Sony. I was using both for the first time & the second I leaned the camera forward, my flash snapped off my camera. It’s pretty much broken now. Idk if it was too too heavy but I’m pretty bummed man I have the worst luck with flashes.
That yellowish color on the sphere is probably not due to age but from the heat of the flash. Check if your flashbulb areas inside the Speedlight can be yellowish too after a lot of usages (regular use for 1-2 years). But yeah, that static thing is very true.
It's pretty terrible. Same issue with "the system." Gels don't stay in their holder that well. Magnets are weak. You can me with it here: ruclips.net/video/NkBamJ9hTrQ/видео.html
I get different saturation color when I postion the magmod directly to the subject .. but when I bounce it up or side it comes well ..any tips .. I add no gels
I borrowed the dome and didn't like using this system at all at events. It makes your camera/flash way too top heavy and my Yongnuo flash couldn't support the weight and it kept flopping down onto my lens. That being said I didn't mind the look you got as long as you used your flash in manual and wound the power right back. But, too expensive, too clumsy and too heavy.
Hi Omar. Do you prefer the magmod system to the godox magnetic gel dome system? I'm going to buy the ad200 and have been going back and forth between the two. The godox system is cheaper and seems easier. Thanks. Long time subscriber.
Hey, y'all. Magmod updated its lineup in March 2022. They made some key improvements!
I have v.2. Gels just clip on it. They must have listened to you. :)
This video just won the Nobel prize for the number of times someone says "keep in mind" :)

You don’t need rubber bands. Velcro on the gel tabs and Velcro on the sides of the flash. Small square or dot Velcro works fast.
