As a night life and event photographer I much prefer the Magbouce to the sphere, more versatile and I find the quality of the light more flattering. The sphere is nice and compact though
In this video, Trevor shares images created with both the MagSphere and MagBounce, and offers up some tips on how each can be used on your next photo shoot.
Haters will hate but I am convinced this is an honest presentation. There is no product that can match this. Just throw on the modifier and the magnets do the job of holding. No more taped velcro or sound or annoying shaping struggles. Just follow his tips and you will love it.
Thanks so much for posting this. I bought the mag sphere a few months ago and am very happy with it. Way less cumbersome than Gary Fong's sphere which worked great but was a bit awkward to use. I think the bounce will be a great addition to my wedding gear and your explanation of when to use each piece was very helpful. I just put it in my shopping cart. This is literally the first I have heard it.
in the footage he's using it in different ways direct with sphere and bounced backwards with sphere but this product is excellent, very well built and portable, very quick to set up. Ideally, you want both light modifiers.
first of all: wow man, you are very good. I do this for almost 8 years now and I am nowhere near your skill. then second: thank you so much, both, bounce and sphere are by far the best adapters I have seen when using on camera flash. I prefer softboxes when working under studio conditions, but these two products are must have and far better than anything similar on amazon. thanks again, you saved me a lot of money and trial and error.
Good video, however, I wish you would have posted 'before' video/photos like you did on the mag grid video so we could get an idea what the scene looked like before you added the bounce/sphere, especially the ones of the high-key bridal shots where you said there was a lot of clutter in the background. What the heck did you do with your camera setting on those?
Liked the video. I think the umbrella gave a smoother transition but if you are on your own and need something that works without an assistant in the outdoors then this is a good option. I like the sphere more for the type of shooting I would use an ultra portable modifier for.
Great explanation. I just purchased the pro kit and can’t wait to dive right in. I have to say it makes my camera a bit more heavy but worth it. Ty Trevor.
I see plenty of difference in the Umbrella/MagBounce comparison--soft, blending lines from the umbrella and a significantly harder, more defined lines from the MagBounce. I'd be curious to see a similar side-by-side comparison of MagBounce vs bare flash. Outdoors at 8 feet, I'd be willing to bet those would look a LOT more similar than the MagBounce/umbrella comparison. Not hating on the MagSphere or MagBounce, mind you--they're great modifiers. But I keep hearing people talk about how great they are for replacing umbrellas outside, and frankly, the examples I've seen don't support that (incidentally, neither does physics...). If you don't have walls to bounce light, once you get more than a few feet away from your subject, you're going to get results that are pretty much identical to a bare bulb zoomed wide, all while wasting the light that's being diffused away from your subject.
I am inclined to agree with you Adam. I too felt that there was an obvious difference between Umbrella/MagBounce comparison, the light was simply more flattering using the umbrella with much nicer transition. However, I do see the possibilities of the MagSphere, especially if shooting events by myself, and by that I mean corporate walk around gigs for example. If I am shooting a wedding its always with an assistant, and if I am hiring an assistant, he's gonna be carrying a proper modifier.
I think the comparison between the mag product and the umbrella was that it gives basically the same result for less weight/hassle and most likely less money.
Certainty less weight and hassle. Possibly cheaper too if you don't hire an assistant, but I can't agree that it delivers better results than an umbrella. The umbrella is simply a much larger light source.
Agreed. I was interested to see what the system does but this video is a sales too to sell to people who don't understand lighting. That's a very poor sell. I also noted with the sphere, they compared with the light bouncing up not bouncing back. I would be very wary. Right now these seem like a waste of money.
As a landscape photographer I'm sold on the idea of using the magbounce as mid sized light source for light painting on milkyway shoots. An order will be going into Amazon this week, does the bounce come with a grip or is that sold separately?
What settings did you use to blow out the back drop for the brides? Every time I try to do it I'm just adding light to the back drop but not blowing it out in pure white and I have it on the highest flash exposure.
Hi Trevor, question regarding the b/w picture at 6:00. Was the Bounce facing towards the camera or against a not so "white are or cellar?" and that created that beautiful white background?
Hi there... can i ask something please? I like the idea of this magbounce/sphere... id like to use it during weddings What flash are you using please? I thinking of investing in a nikon d750 and need a portable set up Thanks all the best
Hello Trevor, I am Yato from Tokyo. I just get the MAGMOD a week ago and I love it so much.. I have question , It is possible to use CTO Gel l together with MagBounce ?
Hi James - Yes. A little bit of light does escape through the material but it's a pretty small amount. Most is reflected in the direction the MagBounce is facing.
Magbounce is a bit too heavy, and if your speedlite is old and the joint between the light and the electronic part is somewhat loose, the flash will flip down.
We have heard that this happened to some speedlights that don't have a lock when pointed straight up. However, some people have been able to point their speedlight straight up, and then rotate it around 180º. This won't allow the speedlight to fall forward, but you may still have to watch out for it falling backwards (towards you). Here is a quick video that a photographer posted in the Facebook Community that illustrates what I'm talking about: facebook.com/groups/1466677920288753/permalink/1680026768953866/?match=ZG9ubmlubw%3D%3D I hope this helps :)
Can we put or rather squeeze in the sphere to the Magbounce so that the light becomes softer. I hate those sudden jump of shadows and would love a better transition from light to dark
It won't become softer. Softness of light is solely the result of the size of your light source in relation to your subject. Even if you could squeeze the MagSphere into the MagBounce the light source will still remain small. It might be more diffuse but not softer.
Very informative video. I recently switched to your excellent Mag Mod system. I have traditionally used a speed light with a small Velcro type soft box mounted on a flash bracket to shoot events. Is there still an advantage to mount the Magmod sphere or bounce on a flash bracket or are they perfectly good mounted on the camera's hot shoe? If I no longer need the flash mounted on a flash bracket with the TTL cable that would be fine by me! Thanks!
Hi Stan, by putting your flash on a bracket you are providing a little bit of direction to your light - however many MagMod users report using the MagSphere or MagBounce on camera and getting great results. For example, Trevor Dayley, loves to use the MagBounce on camera during event/reception coverage as seen in this video.
Hi Gang I'm having problems using the MagMod Magbounce with the Godox AD200 Is the an optimum distance these should be placed when photographing a wedding couple, as I'm getting the dress lit OK, but their faces are less so...the spread isn't what I was expecting... Thanks
Hi Cronas2. I think I just replied to another comment from you on Facebook so this might sound repetitive. Can you post more details in our MagMod Community on Facebook and tag "Trevor Dayley" - he said he would be happy to review the issue you are having and see if he can lend you a hand. If needed he would even be happy to do a video chat with you to discuss. Thanks Cronas2.
Hmmm. Screen perhaps? Personal preference? Hard to say really. But we will take the feedback into consideration next time we do another video like this.
Great video, and amazing photos. Thanks Trevor!. Wondering if you'd have a video explaining the settings of the camera and the flash when using MagMOd modifiers?
Thanks Juan. Carey, great question! The MagBounce is designed to totally scatter and bounce your light forward from the flash. Using a MagGrid with the MagBounce would only reduce your usable light coming out of your flash, so we don't recommend using these two together.
Hi Selva - soft light comes from a bigger light source. But the MagSphere will help the transition on the edges and the MagBounce will help with the spread of the light. If you are shooting in larger rooms, I tend to use the MagBounce, in smaller or medium size rooms the MagSphere is wonderful.
