  • Make your own mind up, but other than Market place and the area around the Frenchgate centre the Town centre was deserted. The High St was pretty empty. People who didn't shop in the 60s, 70s and 80s won't understand what I am saying, its it all our town centres.

    Great video thanks so much. Born and raised in Donny but left in 1996 to find work. I got made redundant from ICI (Dupont) in 1993 and struggled to find a decent job. Still got family there and it will always be home. The building you asked about was the co-op building and the Seventh Heaven (later named Karisma) nightclub was up on the top floor of that building. The pub that was a converted church was called Camelots (possible wrong spelling). Its quite sad to see it so quiet with empty shops etc. It used to be busy. Again thanks for the video and best wishes to all the folks in South Yorkshire.

      Thanks for filling in the blanks for me. Seventh Heaven and Camelot. I didn't realise the Seventh heaven was on top of the Co-op I went there enough times. The Co-op building reminds me so much of an Art Deco cinema building, very unusual for a Co-op building.

    I live in the Borough of Doncaster. My town has just decided to spend 3 mill on cycle and pedestrian lanes, yet the roads are atrocious.
    15/20 minute cities are definitely coming.
    I avoid Doncaster like the plague these days.

      @TimAWells I think doncaster recently being made a city has had a big part in it.
      This pedestrianisation is happening even in the smaller towns.
      The stay at home, stay safe from covid was definitely warm up for this.

      You're right. We have a new variant in Norway - here we live spread over huge distances so they have effectively found another way of doing just the same, under the disingenuous guise of "improving the roads".
      When they have finished "improving the roads" where I live, there will be an automatic road charge at specific points along the route - every 3 to 6 miles. Since the nearest city, in any direction of travel from the village I live in, is at least one hour's driving, in practice this is going to mean that *every single return journey* is going to cost - this is just an estimate - 21 to 25 pounds - in addition to the fuel costs for the vehicle. I don't have an electric vehicle, but frankly they are not going to be exempt from this charge forever, and due to the distances we have to drive, they will have to recharge once they get to their destination before driving back anyway. And they will get extra challenges when we have minus temperatures in the Winter. This is happening all over Norway, wherever you go. So although nobody is stopping you by Law from moving about, from about 2028 I personally will only rarely be able to travel out of my little village, simply because I won't be able to afford to do anything else. These automatic cameras and road charging points (toll) - you keep driving, they read the number plate automatically - are almost literally fencing me into the little place of 2000 people I live in.

      I am tight when it comes to parking fees, I found somewhere at the top end of Doncaster by a park and walked in from there. I couldn't find the three hour free parking in Barnsley, so same again I had to park on a side street and walk in.

    I have always liked Doncaster. Even though it is officially a City now it is far more of a market town than places like Sheffield. The markets have become a bit odd though in recent years, as they have 'refurbished' the Wool Market and turned it into a expensive looking posh thing. Even the fish market has some rather fancy looking stalls now. Still, I always like going round Doncaster for my shopping. The Frenchgate centre is handy (being indoors), and there is a lot more choice than Rotherham.

    • @timawells
      @timawells  Год назад

      I went in the car Steve, its quicker for me to cycle than go on the bus which takes 2 hrs, could get on my cycle in 45 minutes. My understanding is that the main outdoor market was turned into a car park. They ruined Bawtry a few years ago, its only cafes and restaurants. They couldn't even fill the new Mall which was once their outdoor market, gentrifying everything. Originally Sheffield had a massive market area the Haymarket and an indoor market bigger than Doncaster called the Fitzalan market Hall knocked down in the 1930s and became the C&A building. We had the Rag and Tag outdoor market that became the Sheaf and the massive Castle Market and outdoor market there and along Haymarket ad Dixon Lane. The City council have chosen to destroy our heritage.

    The old cinema you mention was the Co-op and above was Seventh Heaven the nightclub you mentioned. The church pub was Camelot's. I lived their from 1971 until 2012 when I move just down the road to Perth in Australia😊. The town centre is a shadow of it's former self. Used to be great but has slowly gone downhill. Usual case of the council wanting you to buy a car yet use the public transport. Knocking down carparks to force you onto public transport. People go elsewhere, shops shut and the council wonders why...
    That's why I started looking elsewhere and eventually left.

      Sheffield the same as Doncaster. I came into Doncaster at night in the 80s, loads of parking back then. Went in the Seventh heaven and didn't realise it was at the top of the Co-op building, it still reminds me of a big cinema though. I think Victoria was locked down a long time but I was probably in the best place in the world at the time. Life was normal here in Perth WA (apart from wearing a mask when out and restaurants could only hold 1/2 of their normal full operation for social distancing) The only time I had to isolate was when I returned from working in PNG, Queensland or the Northern Territory. We had to self isolate for 2 weeks. It was great, BBQ beer and pool after 4 weeks away 😃🍺🍔

    On high street in the 1960's there where three cinemas starting with the picture house, then the Essoldo and finally at the top of the street (Hallgate) was The Gaumont cinema where they used to host shows featuring the current bands of the era. The Gaument was the last one to close. (hallgate). Now town just seems to have nail parlours and barbers then a lot of food outlets nothing more to see really.
