  • Since oversized pistons are not in the budget I use a cheap cylinder hone to clean things up to reuse the stock pistons with a fresh set of piston rings.

    LoL...get some sleep man. Great Video
    As a side note, I like to use the 3 stone because it will take out or at least cut down on any small amount of out of roundness of the cylinder. Then go in with a ball hone for a final pass for the cross hatch. I always seem to get a better 45 degree cross with the ball. But if the cylinder is out of round a ball hone wont correct it. But then again, it all just depends on the condition of the cylinders.

      yes agree but, for this job the cylinders where in great shape plus reusing the stock pistons and did not not need much to clean them up .... this is strictly a budget build and not going crazy with the build because will be building a full race engine in the spring using the block from the car just need something to hold me over ...

      @@maldo72 I would have done the same if I was doing a budget build, no point is putting wear on tools when its not needed. Great Content all around. I've been enjoying the videos.

      @@maldo72 If the cylinders have no major damage and are not severely tappered or out of round I don't see the issue. Ive learned most people who talk like that either 110% listen to the machine shop that tells them it needs to come in with every rebuild..etc..etc. I mean there are risks when using a hone. But if you're careful and take your time that risk is next to zero. Hell tool failures happen and I had a reputable machine shop destroy a LSX 454 block of mine due to a machining tool failure. My dad and I rebuilt the motor in his 74 Ford F100 back in 1999. I honed the cylinders as a senior in high school. And that motor has not been opened up since. Still runs great and has close to 100k miles on it since then.

    Can you rebuild an LT1 without getting the block a $1000 machine job? Can a good clean & hone in the home garage do justice?

    • @maldo72
      @maldo72  2 года назад

      yes that's exactly what I am doing but, the engine you start with has to be in good shape that requires no machine work ...

    • @maldo72
      @maldo72  2 года назад

      couple of factors you have to ask yourself...
      why did it blow?
      Did the car overheat after the head gasket blew
      +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
      for a low buck rebuild like mine
      1) first thing you must check to see it the block and head are straight (simple flat edge will do)
      2) since this is not a 100% race engine and i knew the motor was good before i removed the heads ... i used a simple cleaning disk and a wire wheel (on a drill ) then check to make sure the block was straight with a straight edge....
      you said your on a budget is so
      as for the bearing i would leave alone (simple pop off a rod cap and see what a few of the bearings look like if good don't mess with it till your ready for a full rebuild..

      @@maldo72 thanks for the advice. And the car had been overheating due to a clog in what I thought was the radiator. The hot sir wouldn't work and then the temperature would go down normal. Been doing that for months. The gasket itself had a rusted sppt where the water breached. Car overheated. I waited for it to cool down. I added antifreeze and drove it home. In the morning it would not turn on. I checked the oil cap. Had water. Took off the intake manifold. Had water sludge in it I drained the oil pan and all the coolant came out the pan. Took off the heads and everything else. No water In the block from what I can tell

    Maldo!!! So I have a question about my 93 formula LT1. Recently I noticed it kinda hesitates to shift when I’m im open in full throttle. Usually from 30-50 it’ll kinda rev like it won’t wanna shift then let go of the throttle and it’ll shift afterwards. Any ideas? I’m guessing I need a new opti. My tranny is a new remanufactured one out of Portland.

    • @maldo72
      @maldo72  2 года назад

      so your saying it does not want to shift like it holding the gear? then when you let go of the throttle it with then shift? or is the engine hesitating before it shifts?

    • @mikeyalmaraz2325
      @mikeyalmaraz2325 2 года назад

      @@maldo72 engine is definitely hesitating first. Yes it’s almost like it’s spitting. But yes it will shift fine after I let off the throttle for a couple seconds then you’ll feel it shift then you can get back onto the throttle

    How do you know what the bores measured before and after?

    • @maldo72
      @maldo72  2 года назад +1

      did a quick check with a snap gauge and since i am reusing the stock pistons the hone will have no or little effect on bore size ... all i am doing is scuffing up the bores for the new piston rings

    Are you going to stay with the optispark or you going to convert over to the torque head conversion kit

      at this point optispark.. cant justify spending more on the ignition system then the whole build
